Now i see "beat the soy" i'm hoping that means there are crops as a challenge but for all i know it's avoiding soylent green....
The Japanese concept of wabisabi:
The closest concept in english would be 'rustic'
They might have an old thing, one example is a favourite bowl or dish, it's broken, pieces are missing, why fix it?  With gold and pieces from other dishes?

That could go with the tundra theory. Besides, snow isn't soil and things still grow in snowy regions. And going off the preview of the snow map, there are quite a bit of trees.
