Terrains/Heightmaps
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:48:33 pm »
As some of you know, I've taken on a large project of creating several maps. Today I decided to go and make the heightmap for the new one. Whenever I try to add it in, my game crashes. I type in the name of the heightmap, which I put in the correct location, as a .png image. And then it crashes. I've tried renaming it, deleting old heightmaps/map folders, but it still crashes my game. I've also tried testing it with different heightmaps. Nothing works.

It's probably the size of you've made the file ^^'

You should have the map be 513x513
And make sure you grey scale it dearie~

The thing is, it IS 513x513 and greyscale. I have no idea what's going on.

I'm curious if it had to do something with you removing the map folders :p

I put the old map folders back, my game wouldn't work without it.

Very odd, sadly I can't find a solution for this, I'm sorry. I'm sure some floofs will rush here to help though~

Make sure there is no alpha channel! If you're using Gimp for this, here's what to do.

1. Open the Heightmap.

2. Go to the "layers" window. (If there is no window open for it, go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers)

3. Right click the heightmap layer and if an option for "Remove alpha channel" is available, click on it. (Note: if there are any other layers, either delete them or merge them down onto the heightmap layer. There should be no other layers.)

4. Save and try to load it now.

As mentioned above, the Alpha Channel lock is often a common mistake. Also, be sure to flatten the heightmap's layers. Red has a very helpful tutorial that shows you how to create a heightmap using Photoshopp or Gimp. If you take a look, you may find a missing step somewhere while you were creating your own.

.jpg works as well, just type mapnamehere.jpg on the world tab, so .jpg or .png doesn't matter. What does matter tho, is size and such as said above. When saving a .png out of GIMP, you must be sure to pick the "Flatten Image" option, instead of the "Merge Visible Layers" option. Not choosing the right one can and will cause the game to crash almost instantly after entering the map's name. With .jpg, it will flatten the image for you as .jpg does not support layers like .png does. However, if your game continues to be dysfunctional after following thru with these steps and any other advice given, it could be that the file itself is corrupt and is best to delete it, and start again. Deleting the .png map file won't do much, as sometimes the GIMP file (.xcf) can become corrupt as well.
