Once again, they fell into a silent, rhythmic step as they made their way back towards the meeting area. The sun threatened to set the world into darkness as the shadows cast from the buildings grew longer and longer.

"You know, the one thing I'm going to miss about that hellhole..."

Thomas' eyes flicked up from the rubble, glancing sideways at the girl before resting back onto the ground. A soft hum sounded from his throat in response as his slipped his hands in his pockets. "..is the way that in my room, the window had a view of the forest. I know it had bars on it, but if I looked for long enough, it felt like I was actually out there." She fell quiet again, but her words didn't seem to solicit a response from Thomas, who simply raised a brow at her thoughts.

"It's stupid, but it was the only way I could feel even a little bit free in there." Just as she fell quiet once more, the meeting area came into view. Suddenly, Thomas pulled to a stop, still yards from the actual spot. "When I first arrived Id venture onto the smaller landings on the roof over looking the Windows. Id sit and smoke, normally traverse my mind in search of exactly why i chose that clinic instead of jail. After they began testing, one day I managed to find a way to climb onto a landing close enough to the outer fences that I could escape."[/b]

He broke the silence, his sudden outburst breaking the air as he paused, glancing the girl's visage over before continuing.

"I could have left. I had the opportunity to jump the fence and flee but I didn't. A few days later they had reconstructed the landing and made it impossible to escape. After that I could never find any sliver of freedom in that vicinity. I'm not quite sure why I didn't flee,..but by doing so I had my small bit of freedom taken and I understand that feeling. So no, little Brave, that's not quite what id stupid."

He paused, taking in her anxious frame once more before turning on his heels and continuing towards the area. Within minutes, they arrived. "The others will arrive shortly.." his words were cut short by an unexpected noise. A small can rattling sounded from a nearby shop riddled with debris. Instinctively, Thomas took a small step to the side, blocking Jess' view to the building and becoming a middle man between whatever was in that shop and his new found life source, Jess and her tracking implant.

After a few moments, the air settled and Thomas glanced back at the girl. "This town must be home to many wildlife creatures by now." he muttered, reassurance in his voice not only to Jess but to himself.

The sun was beginning to tease the horizon, clouded over by a mask of grey, it cast a shadow over the already mysterious city, sunk beneath it's own dilapidated frames and buildings. The skeleton of the city, it's innards and falling structures, sighed beneath the weight of the debris decorating them. The street, barely visible beneath the leaves and rusting vehicles, hummed against the sound of the two partners making their way down it's length. Jess' eyes remained glued to her decomposing shoes, a sense of disappointment filling her gaze. Thomas' fingers traced the phone in his pocket whilst his other hand swung loosely beside him, these two colliding emotions oozing from the two sent them into a silent daze as the travelled.

Finally, it was the sudden lack of tiny footsteps that brought Tom to a hault. Jess was no longer by his side, but glancing down at the ground just behind him..her worn shoes were. She's missing and barefoot..wonderful. Suddenly, his eyes caught movement, and turning just in time, he caught sight of her. Jess finished adjusting the already laced boots she found, before reapproaching him. Yet, something was different in her visage. She didn't meet his gaze, and instead haulted right beside him, her eyes darting about in a nervous manner. "Tom." Her gentle voice announced his name, asking for his attention in a shy tone. She was anxious..about what?

At the sudden urgency she seemed to collect, saying his name let alone speaking at all worried Tom. Gazing down beside him at her, though she still had yet to meet his eyes, Tom raised a brow. "Yes?" He replied in a hushed tone much like hers. "I don't think we're alone." The words shot a nerve through Tom. Recollecting the movement he saw earlier with no explanation, Thomas knew his opinion. Yet, his words contradicted that.

"The city is abandoned. We're alone here.." his accent dripped from each word, and yet his words were lies. He, too, felt something here but to worry the girl more was of no benefit. Glancing back down at her anxious gaze, a soft sigh slipped his lips. His hand immediately found her shoulder, using a single finger to move the hair from her face and force her to meet his eyes, "It's getting late. I'm sure the others are on their way back, shall we? I'll be righg next to you." He lowered his voice, raising a brow before stepping aside and motioning for her to follow before continuing down the road towards the meeting area.

It had been a small section of time since the group parted in search of anything useful. The town was desiccated, left to ruins amongst a forest of indescribable depths, to which they had no clue reached what lengths. Shifting amongst the rubble and fallen debris decorating every building's innards, Tom and Jess settled into a small mini mart. Jess offered him a small reassuring smile before disappearing into the aisles. Watching as she disappeared amongst the fallen shelves, Tom raised a brow at her sudden confidence smothering her stride and gate. He was sure it wouldn't last long, though the girl had occumulated the ability to be proud and outspoken, she wasn't quite capable of keeping it for lengths of time.

one step at a time..

Turning on his heels, Thomas took his own initiative and began searching the cash registers. Behind the shelves, between the rubble..nothing offered much aside from an untouched pack of cigarettes. Not my brand..pity. it'll do. The sudden crunching of concrete caught his attention as Jess approached with her wide eyes glimmering with pride. Within her hands laid a cell phone. "A cell phone..brilliant." He muttered with a small tone of astonishment, which quickly faded as he grabbed the device and learned its inability to turn on.

"If it worked..Anything else?" Tom questioned, glancing over to Jess who frowned at the cellphone before shaking her head. Fumbling with the device in his fingers, Thomas pauses, running his thumb over a small sticker placed on the back of the phone. "Are you alright?" Jess' voice always astonished him at its smoothness despite its lack of being used. Furrowing his brow, he nodded "This sticker is from a Mighty Terror Ted package..I used to have one. My brother used to steal them from me, he was a little thief...just, coincidentally nostalgic. Shall we?" He broke from his slightly saddening mood, waving a hand at the door. Jess wasn't ignorant, and despite her worried look, she nodded, continuing towards the door with Thomas close behind, shoving the phone in his pocket.

Her voice had slipped past her usually still lips, but Thomas couldn't glance at her baffled. His eyes were already on her, pondering the smile of confidence and reassurance she had just offered him. Now with this sudden outburst of ideas, Thomas allowed her feminine and gentle voice to sink in. The city would offer shelter at the least..food of natural flavours due to the lack of human touch for so many years Thomas doubted a nice bag of chips would be laying about. His eyes finally slid away from Jess and to the others, "I agree." He announced, his 'R' purring with his familiar accent and tone, "Splitting up now is exactly what they desire from us..I propose we do as Finn says, but Jessamine is right. We might have a better opportunity within the city's limits."

A sudden noise echoed along the buildings and rubble among the streets, reaching the group with a shuffle and bang. Something had knocked something large over.

Or something large knocked something over.

Tom's head shot around, his eyes piercing along the buildings. "Splitting up sounds horrid..but we might have a better chance of finding anything useful this way. If we remain by our partners..we could meet back here by sundown..and spend the night in that cafe." Tom's finger flicked to a small, subtle cafe dusted and shoved between two collapsed buildings. Worry shot through Tom's mind, tomorrow they would begin a journey that none knew how to take..or where it would lead them.

The sudden intertwining of his and Jess' survival weighed him down, without her he was certainly dead, without him..well who knew. Tom felt a sudden wave of uselessness and vulnerability, he depended on her. Yet, once he glanced over to her massive doe-like eyes, his tongue slipped, "We'll be fine." He muttered, his words spoken out loud but obviously meant to reassure her of any worries. They'd be fine. He'd make sure of it..and by her newest sense of confidence, she would too.

The ride alone was compact full of bumps and shivers within the craft's solid frame, but the one thing that caught Thomas' attention for the majority of the ride, was Jess' consistent foot tapping. Her nervousness and anxiety built within her as she tapped for the major part of the ride. Tom made a note not to comment, seeing that the girl appeared truly bothered, and the tapping was nothing compared to the constant rumbling if the engines.

It was a short experience as they landed, Tom furrowing his brow at the craft's lack of windows, blocking his view from their environment. The seatbelts unbuckled, and the doctor motioned for them to follow. Tom stood, his eyes glancing to Jess, watching to see if she followed, before continuing off the ramp and off the craft. Immediately his eyes glanced about.

The sun which morphed the world into an easy bake oven half an hour before now hid behind a thick blanket of dark grey clouds, casting a veil of dim shadows on the land around them. They seemed to stand in the midst of an abandoned city, its buildings decaying and falling to black, charred, and rusted ruins. "As large as New York City and as older than it.." the doctor announced

Tom gazed about, listening yet not paying attention. Tom had a knack for that. The group exited the plane and stood on the ground, whilst the doctor made himself comfortable standing on the edge of the craft, watching uneasily. "It was called Greevehale. It was booming with people,..new inventions. Sadly, it was a target and a nuclear plant was bombed. The city was evacuated but not before fires and mobs broke out. It's been empty ever since. The radioactivity is harmless now, but it still has a haunted feel.."

Tom stepped away from the group, his feet crunching the loose chunks of road and concrete painting the ground as he glanced about at the half standing sky scrapers. The wind picked up, carrying an odd scent of rust and decay. Furrowing his brows, Tom's eyes landed on a small window cracked and shattered over its edges. A small movement caught his eye, but Was quickly ignored as the doctor began retreating onto the ship again. "You're next task, is to survive this. Make it to the next city which is About..a weeks travel by foot, a small town called HaydenHall. No vehicles work in this city...no roads for miles, forests made sure to destroy any leading in and out of the city."

Tom turned on his heels, watching as the doctor walked further into the plane. Stomping through the group, he ground his teeth in annoyance, "Your leaving us in this bloody place? We've been prodded and tested just to be dumped in a..a damned wanna be New York?" The doctor paused, lifting a finger, "Last bit of advice, keep your partner alive..no matter what. A support system is one of the strongest weapons alive..those tracking chips implanted in you all..well lets say they're intertwined with your chosen partner."

Thomas' mind wandered to Jess, the girl was anxious, quiet, shy..but she had a spark unlike any he'd seen. She was tough, that was for sure, but intertwined?..by what means? "You all are weak alone but together you are godly..though you may seem strong as a single being, perhaps it is your smaller, seemingly weaker partner who is stronger. Out in the wild, once a mother wolf dies her pups are almost always doomed to the same fate..sadly mother wolves often die attempting to protect their pups.." The doctor's words rang through the air,

"Mykael, Finn, Theodore, and Thomas if any of you die your partner will survive..you are the pups. However the other devices are set to wire and release a toxin into the blood stream of its owner once its partners heart stops. So, Jessamine, Rylee, Remington, and Simone..if any of you die your partner will as well..the mothers..the partner system is so damning, really. Pups, i suggest you care for your mothers, without then youre dead. Mothers, watch your pups,..without them you are utterlt alone. Oh, one more thing, rip the device out and you'll bleed to death, no matter your healing powers. We created them, we know their weaknesses."

And for once in his life, the deeply in need of anger-management Thomas, stood speechless as the doctor boarded the ship. Even as the craft disappeared into the sky, leaving them standing amongst the fallen city, he stood frozen in place. Suddenly, his eyes slid over and his head swiveled to land on Jessamine. He seemed neither annoyed or angry, yet neither happy nor contempt. Back home, Michael was always fearful of Thomas when he couldn't pin point his current attitude. Yet, Thomas gazed at her with What seemed like worry, for not only her or him, for them as a whole.
