News Archives / Re: // Feral-Heart Game Update June 2016 //
« on: June 12, 2016, 03:22:11 am »
So I've been pondering how to respond to this for a bit, and I guess I'll just get it out since I need to lift this weight from my chest.

When I heard yesterday that there was an update to FH, I was excited. New maps, some upgrades maybe? Yes! I quickly rushed to see the list of updates, and as I read on, the more disappointed I got. Removal of all the maps, addition of these new ones. Maybe it's because I'm an old timer that I was just upset because I was sentimental. After reading the updates I thought "Oh, don't jump to conclusions. Give it a try." So I did. I couldn't get passed the character selection screen, but that was as expected since it was new and there were (and probably still are) some kinks to work out. No fret.

So I asked my friend to get me some screenshots so I could preview. She sent them to me, and it was not what I expected at all.

I found that what made FH so original, so adored by its long-time members and even the new ones, was gone. It was transformed into what could be set up as another Impressive World server. From my own experiences with Impressive World servers, none of them have any originality that causes any one in particular to stick out in my mind. They all just blend together, and I fear that it will happen with the new update.

From the generic designs of the maps (I was sent screenshots of two different maps, both looked exactly the same), to the Impressive Title items and Moonwalk animation, even right down to the portals being globes just like in Impressive Title/World servers, all I could see was a game that was "devolving" back into a game that was shut down a long time ago.

I don't mean to disrespect the staff, I don't doubt that it is incredibly hard and stressful to push out an update that is intended to better a game that was already adored so much. Especially without a source code. I don't doubt that the staff went to great lengths in order to make it possible for the community to enjoy an update. Good on the staff for taking a bold step in a direction that will probably be slightly controversial in the developed community this game has brought together. This is only my opinion, my two cents. And to the staff, I hope you guys can develop a great community around this new version of FH, and good luck to you.

With respect.

Gotta agree with you, bro. Took away all of the maps that have been around for years and replaced them with maps that, while they look really good as far as detail goes, have little personality and all look the same.

I was scared to say something but DevilBurgers said it for me.

Yeah, I think a lot of people know that things such as suicide, rape, ebola, etc. are serious topics but making jokes about it does help some people go through with it. And I have a lot of drama in my family so I think I do have some rights to joke about them. Even at school, my teacher jokes about Ebola so we don't see it as something that will put us into a panic and have us stressed out 24/7 so we couldn't focus. Now do I say this stuff to everyone? No, only the people that I feel can handle it,  I love all kinds of humor and dark humor is something that really gets me laughing. I love a good joke or two about pedos, drugs, and the like, it is something I enjoy. And when a person gets all mean and walks away from it, I wonder why. Because to me, I don't see what the big deal is. Yes I know how serious these topics are, I am 16 and almost in the middle of my high school life. The main reason why I won't joke about such things is if a friend or person I am talking to has had a bad experience with such things, then I understand. But, as DevilBurgers said, a joke is a joke and I don't like cussing, yet all of my friends cuss like sailors, even I have a few times, do I get mad at them? No I ignore it.
If I sounded offensive I am sorry, I just had to get this off my chest

I think the main point here is that if you've got friends that can deal with the subject, then that's fine; you can keep it between them and yourself - just don't go spewing it in public like lots of FH users do. Subjects like terrorism, rape, suicide, ebola, are really heavy and dark subjects that either directly or indirectly affect a lot, and I mean a lot of people, and people get upset when they hear about it. Some people joke about stuff to relieve themselves, but as Suragaha said, it's somewhat insensitive to others and selfish, and that's not how everyone deals with it; some folks just really don't want to hear about the stuff. You wouldn't crack a joke with such heavy subjects around people you didn't know, because it could quite easily offend them; but many FH users say these things in public chat regardless of who is listening, and I'm pretty sure that's what this is about. To me these jokes, while some might regard them as relieving, is just making light of a dark subject and subsequently making it seem less way less bad than it actually is. It's unnecessarily bringing these subjects back into the spotlight when some people want to just forget about them - or worse, it's bringing them into the spotlight in the wrong way. Why make insensitive jests out of something that so deeply affects many people?

I'm just going to put this out there that I myself am a victim of sexual assault, and I make it very clear to people I know not to use the word 'rape' when in my presence; yet a few still do. Why? I don't know. Maybe they think it's not a serious problem; maybe they just don't think; maybe they're just like "LOL but rape is a term for when you get pwned in a game, lol right?"; maybe they don't really care or think that by joking about the stuff, I'll feel better about what happened - but I don't. Every time I hear about it, I feel worse. Yeah, joke about this stuff with your friends so long as they're okay with it - but don't put it where everyone can see it, don't crack jokes when others have made it explicitly clear not to talk about it. That's exactly the problem in FeralHeart. People run around and say stuff in local about getting raped, or about terrorism, or about ebola - they say it in local (and previously in general) where absolutely anyone and everyone can see it without giving a single damn about how other people might feel about it. It's wrong, and FH users and internet users in general need to stop being so jejune and grow the heck up. People need to realise that words have a huge impact that can really affect a person's mental health negatively. Before saying this stuff in public, people should just think for a split second. That's all it takes: half a second of thinking.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, Suragaha; these kinds of subjects aren't acceptable, and they should not be spoken of, either on FH or elsewhere. Unfortunately there's some people that have to joke about these things; but if they're going to do it, they should do it in whisper and not in local where everyone can see it.

Thank you all for your comments. ^^ In response to Peenut2k7, heightmaps are more or less provided for you in-game in the form of the minimap, which appears in the upper left of the screen. Just run your character or camera to a position where all of the heightmap is visible, press print screen, and then it'll be available in your FeralHeart's screenshots folder. All you have to do is select the area containing the heightmap and enlarge it to 513 x 513. Of course, since the minimap is so small, there will be some quality loss when resizing - but that detail can be painted back in afterwards.

In response to Jennifer, many thanks. ^^ I'm inclined to agree with you; it's a shame Kovu never implemented shadows or bloom into FeralHeart.

FaceRig! :D Unfortunately,  I have no webcam. I would get it otherwise :c

It also works if you have a tablet, an iPhone, or something similar with WiFi and app capabilities ^^

Site/Forum Help / Is it possible to "unsubscribe" from a thread?
« on: September 25, 2014, 08:58:01 pm »
I had looked into this matter a while back, methinks sometime in 2012 or early 2013, and I'm fairly positive the answer was "No.". But I'm still curious, is there a way to 'unsubscribe' from a thread? For example: I post once in a thread, and thenceforward I receive notifications in the 'show new replies to your posts' area every time someone else posts in that thread. If I mark everything as read, then it just comes back the next time someone, anyone else responds to it - it doesn't matter if it's days or weeks or months since my post - it doesn't matter if the post was in response to mine or not: so long as somebody posts, I get updated about it.

Some threads I posted in date back towards the beginning of my registration, threads that I've long since forgotten about or have stopped caring about - it would be great if there was a way to remove these threads from my active notifications, as there's no need to keep me updated on them anymore. So is there a way to do it? ^^

In my opinion if people absolutely have to roleplay this stuff, then it should be done in group chat, whisper, or in a private map where no one except the people absolutely pertinent to the roleplay can see it. These are sensitive subjects, and they should be kept far away from local.

ahajslqn Do you even know how important this game is to me? ;-; I grew up watching my brothers play it when I was about 7. Blood and gore didn't exactly bother me. After about a year or two they stopped playing it and moved onto Skyrim. I never saw it ever again. But over summer break I found the game disk. I decided that I wanted to try the game out myself, and that night I stayed up all night playing it. I as so fascinated by the story line. It was also amazing to see everything I could remember. I vividly remember the beginning of the game (starting out in a prison, seeing the emporer, etc.), the oblivion gates, and the Arena. My brothers spent all of their time there. The only faction I truly remember was the Dark Brotherhood, specifically the sanctuary. The characters I remembered were the Grey Prince, Owyn, Sheogorath, and Lucien Lahchance. Going back to the game felt so good. Too bad no one else my age plays games such as the Elder Scrolls, eh?
It is a shame that the current generation is more into Skyrim; Skyrim is an amazing game, but for me Oblivion's where it's at. I'm happy that we're all fans of it, here ^^

Also, ~River~, Deadly Reflex is an amazing mod. xD Did you know there's a Skyrim version called Deadly Mutilation?
O-O No, I did not.
I have a question for you lovely floofs!
Q: Is there an Oblivion mod that will alllow me to shoot arrows from horseback? (totally not obsessed with Brave)

I don't know of any, and I'm not sure if mounted combat with bows is possible. There is this one mod that was uploaded a while back, and it seems to be the only one of its kind, here: http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/8962/?

It allows for spellcasting while on horseback, and it apparently changes the horse behavior to be a little bit more like that of Mount and Blade.
