Preset mane's white odd lines..[SOLVED]
« on: January 05, 2015, 03:33:44 pm »
Arrrrrrr.

...Call me awkward for the fact I could have found a topic with this solution, about 300 pages further probably...[even with the searchbar] But, never seen a thing.
Welp. I find it time to take it back to the top again. Mainly because I'm highly asure this thing is also quite an issue whenever making presets.
I'd consider myself intermediate when it comes to making presets+manes as I never had any big problems with rendering and exporting a preset in game,
but this hella made me slap myself in the face a hundred times.

This is basically the code I add to every mane, just as the default mane is for the game model of both feline and canine. And that we might all know about.
Code: [Select]
material preset_#_maneMat
{
technique
{
pass
{
cull_hardware none
cull_software none
alpha_rejection greater_equal 128
texture_unit
{
texture preset_#mane.png
}
}
}
}

However, I'm still experiencing this result.

Which makes me think Ruby's, EvilSock's and a few other tutorials about mane fixing didn't really work for me, unfortunately.
As the rest of any mane tutorial is just a tutorial within a general guide how to make a preset, without giving detail if an issue comes up how that person would fix it.
Before I sound like a prejudiciable snob, I do not want give a bad mark to the work these people do. They probably do great!
It appearently just didn't work for me quite well.

If any floof has experience with this. I can use some assistance. I be thankful for everyone who can help out.

-Few details about how I'm working-
Photoshop CC '14.
I make the manes, basically with a shade and some normal colouring.
Locking transparency, saving as .png, giving this the name in de code etc.

Perhaps I may have a wrong way of working in Photoshop.
Maybe I should have put both shade and mask layer to Multiply or locked transparency in order to remove them?
Otherwise it could be the settings I should reset in Photoshop. It couldn't be because I simply work on a Macbook.
[I've done research to that part. Muhaha]
I am totally lost. But as I said, any help is welcome! Thanks in advance.

Hello, Amares. That can be fixed no problem, I believe I know a couple of main solutions. First off, try this mane code instead:

Code: [Select]
material preset_#_maneMat
{
technique
{
pass
{
lighting off
cull_hardware none
cull_software none
scene_blend alpha_blend
depth_write off
texture_unit
{
texture preset_#mane.png
}
}
}
}

If that doesn't work, try this:

When you load the Mane Mask in Photoshop, and then add the Fur layer, you would multiply or add a different effect to it. Try erasing the fur texture that is covering the transparency part of the mane. As shown here:

Erasing the mane covering the Transparency

Adding 'Multiply' to the texture of the mane

Hopefully once you save this, it will fix the problem.

I find it sad to say that to have tried that a few times, even right before posting this. It doesn't make it less different and still gives the same problem.
scene_blend alpha_blend makes the tufts like...you can practically look through the mane. Wasn't the very best idea to try I guess. >_<
Sorry to hear this from me, but at least super thankye' for replying!

+floof for the favour~

OR, maybe ye might have other suggestions for me, Bawfle?

hmm.. I don't know what to suggest, does it work when you use it in another preset folder? Maybe test it out and see if that works. If so, try copying and re-numbering the coding in the material files that do work.

Seems to do the trick sometimes, using the code you shared~

Maybe try to (depending what program you use to create presets) use A colorized wheel to change the color to what you want?

I use Photoshop as I stated in the main post. But I don't really seem to get how colour can make transparency to cut out the blocky white edges in the teeth shaped ends of the mane as I tried. It's because I'm unable to see what makes the white in Photoshop/in-game - the quick selection and eraser tool are strong with this one, always. XD

With all of the very simple standard things I tried, also with help from a friend who surprisingly could fix it for her own preset
and has pretty much the same strategy of working as me, I doubting it's Photoshop itsself..
Maybe you could explain this way about the colourized wheel a bit more or link me to one?

Aye, could be photoshop itself. Different art programs save/export differently. Some will save the transparency and some on't save it as well as others might. Maybe try using a different art software such as GIMP 2.8 and make the make on there.

Worth a try.

I actually have a problem with making manes in Photoshop also; I end up using Gimp instead. I doubt it is anything with the program itself, but instead we are just missing a step. I'd recommend using this tutorial for GIMP.
Quote
How do I make a mane for my preset?

1. Go into GIMP

2. Open C: >>>> Feralheart >>> media >> textures > fmanemask
Now, don't be fooled by the f. This is for both canine and feline.

3. Now, before you can do anything, you must lock the alpha channel, which in fancy terms means lock the transparency. It's just a way of saying: "No coloring on the transparent parts." lol

4. If you did step 3 correctly and without any issues, you may color your preset's mane!

Again if you did step 3 correctly, none of the colors should appear on the transparent parts of the fmanemask because the alpha channel is locked.

5. (Do this if you don't want it "cartoony".) Go into C: >>>> Feralheart >>> media >> textures > fmaneshade and OPEN IT AS LAYERS.
It should look like this:

6. Ok, now that that is good, (listen closely) left click the mane thing and there should be a list of differnet options. Go under layer >> transparency > color to alpha. Click it and click ok again. Now it should appear like this:

7. Hurr hurr, we're not done yet. Now, left click again and go under layer >> transparency > alpha to selection. You probably won't notice much of a difference. Here, also look at the top of the Gimp browser and there will be a button that says select. Click it and click invert.

8. Rub out, or erase, all the transparent parts of the mane, so pretty much the bottom. Don't worry about touching the mane. It won't change its outcome.

9. Now, we export to C: >>> Feralheart >> my_presets > (The preset number you used) and export it as preset_(NUMBER YOU USED)mane
as a .png file format.

Here's the preset mane fix that just happens with the game:

Code: [Select]
material preset_#_maneMat
{
        technique
        {
                pass
                {
                        cull_hardware none
                        cull_software none
                        alpha_rejection greater_equal 128
                        texture_unit
                        {
                                texture preset_#mane.png
                        }
                }
        }
}
To enter a code in, you must go into the .material file in C: >>> Feralheart >> my_presets > (THE NUMBER OF YOUR PRESET) and change it yourself. It may seem like nonsense at first but it gets easier.

If followed exactly, congrats, you have successfully created a preset mane!

Holy wordies, I can't even speak or type them out.
This is STUNNING and GIMP 2.8 really did work!
Thanks a bunch guys! I'd either use PaintTool SAI or GIMP for the manes or many other things now.
I hope others can learn from this, too.
