If you made it in GIMP there is an option to "flatten" the image, i think it's under the 'image' menu, and that helps.  Or maybe you did that already?
The Japanese concept of wabisabi:
The closest concept in english would be 'rustic'
They might have an old thing, one example is a favourite bowl or dish, it's broken, pieces are missing, why fix it?  With gold and pieces from other dishes?

'Ave ye compressed the layers? If there are multiple layers 'twill not work- I sometimes 'ave to copy visible and paste it on a new grayscale canvas and overwrite the original file to get it to work. Hope this helps ye.
