Feral Heart Library! (Book Recommendations Needed!)
« on: July 13, 2018, 10:50:44 am »

INFO:
For a while now, I've noticed a cross-section between certain types of books and FeralHeart users
(as I'm sure you've noticed too--it doesn't take long before you spot some Warriors Cats roleplayers !)
Quite a few of these books are commonly liked within the community and, as you'd expect,
they heavily involve animals in some manner. Whether it be written from the animals' perspective(s),
involves anthropomorphic animals, or just has a strong basis in animal mythology--
FH users are pretty passionate about animal-centered literature.

So, I've deiced to compile a list of books with a strong focus on animals as a way to have a place of reference for book recommendations that FeralHeart users might enjoy !
Please go ahead and leave recommendations of books you've enjoyed or you'd think other FeralHeart users would also enjoy !

RULES:

1. The book(s) has to be animal-centered in some way

2. Give me the title of the book(s) as well as the author(s)

3. Sorry but no children's picture books. However-- I will be accepting
graphic novels/comics/manga and things of that natue.

4. If the book(s) you recommend is suited for more mature readers
(or has any graphic content)--please let me know ! I will leave a little "m"
next to the title of the book(s) on the list that will stand for "Mature".
If you're unsure if the book(s) you've listed
should be considered mature just say so and I'll find out for you !
*Just a rule of thumb/disclaimer*:
if the book has graphic content but is still widely
considered children's literature then I won't label it as mature
(i.e. Warriors or Redwall).

Very good idea! The books I read are mostly factual or about animal welfare, so I suppose many of them would be mature since it has mental and physical issues talked about???
Dominion by Matthew Scully
Animal Madness by Laurel Braitman
Last Chain on Billy by Carol Bradley

Right now I'm reading What A Fish Knows by Jonathan Balcombe

I know so many lol. I used to read a lot of animal books as a kid. Most of these are 30+ years old
White Fang by Jack London
Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George
Julie's Wolf Pack by Jean Craighead George
Plague Dogs by Richard Adams
Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien
Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

Some picture books that I had to include becuz nostalgia:
Angelina Ballerina by Katharine Holabird
Cat Wings by Ursula K. Le Guin
Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes
Every book by Richard Scarry (Busy, Busy Town, What Do People Do All Day?, Best Word Book Ever, Cars and Trucks and Things That Go)

Some of these (Stone Fox, White Fang, Julie of the Wolves, and War Horse) are told at least partially in the perspective of human characters but I still recommend reading them.

Good start to the list !
I used to read books about animal welfare too but I've since taken a break from them. However, I might go ahead and check out What A Fish Knows-- seems interesting ! Thank you !

I almost forgot about Julie of the Wolves ! Lots of oldies but goodies for sure ! Although I have to say some of the authors I no longer like because of their racist/sexist opinions (coughcough Jack London & Roald Dahl cough cough). But hey, some people are fine with separating the work from the artist--I'm just not one of those people.
Also, I should've specified that I won't be considering children's picture books for this list, sorry about that ! I'll go ahead and add that to the rules but still, thank you so much !!

I don't think anyone mentioned the Silverwing saga (which consists of Silverwing, Sunwing, and Firewing) by Kenneth Oppel.

I'm unsure if it was mature or not. A lot of kids in middle school were reading it, if that helps any.

Yeah, I think I read the first book in 5th grade and based on what I looked up it's considered both young adult and children's lit so I don't think I'll consider it as mature for this list. But, thank you ! It's added !

I would think The Plague Dogs to be mature, as well as Watership down. Perhaps for both the graphic material, subject matter and difficult comprehension. (I have read both books, and I would prefer them to be labelled as mature as they are not books for everyone.)

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
Call of the Wild by Jack London
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell ! (sad content)
Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry
Stormy, Misty's Foal by Marguerite Henry
Sea Star: Orphan of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry
The Island Stallion and The Black Stallion by Walter Farely
Starshine Legacy (the comics) by Pixel Tales and Hidden Entertainment (possibly?) ! (scary content)
Wolf Children by Mamoru Hosoda ! (sad content)
(M) Ginga Series by Yoshihiro Takahashi
