Comment what species you guys would want to play as the most! It can be any species you want. The most popular one I'll work on modelling in both feral and anthro form first and get them put in the game. Maybe I'll try to get a small offline demo out that you guys can mess around with.

So far I have 2 votes for felines and 1 vote for foxes.

As for updates on the game, I ended up recoding the character controller since I guess I wasn't doing it right lol. Now it's using the proper codes for moving around. Yay! Also, a big thanks to Athert for being so kind to help me!

I have a discord server where I'll be posting my progress on this game! Please also stick around to have some fun with the other members!

April 07, 2018

Well. I'm slowly coding an online game right now and I've been trying to decide what its fate should be. My main problem is that I don't have the money to host a server if it gets big enough. Maybe I can figure something out, but I'm feeling doubtful. My other option would be to sell the source code to you guys.

Before I make a decision, though... What would you prefer to see happen?

Don't sell the source code and keep the game on one server.

While the game itself would be free, it'll include some paid features and a premium membership to help pay for the servers. Keep in mind, this won't take away from the fun of the game! Think of Cereal Soup, if you will. The last I checked, they were doing premium memberships and maybe some other paid stuff (please correct me if I'm wrong). The game itself is still free and you can still have fun playing it with your friends without paying anything at all.

The game's development will follow what I have planned for it. It’ll definitely be more than a simple virtual roleplay/chatroom. There will be more things to keep you entertained, such as kill mobs, collect items, gain skills, do story quests, and possibly more. I would like to go passed what IT and CS are currently, although, I'll be focusing on getting the game caught up with them first (gotta take one step at a time, and I want to be sure everything is working with minimal bugs before I get into bigger stuff).

I most likely will not allow custom content to be inserted into the game (unless it becomes a premium feature), but I wouldn't mind taking some ideas that I like offered from the community and putting them into the game for everyone to enjoy.

Sell the source code of the game so people can make their own server.

You'll be required to pay in order to get your hands on the source code of the game and host it yourself (sorry guys, figured I should try to make a living off of my work somehow). It'll come with a set of default models, animations, textures, maps, and etc. that you can use. If you don’t want to use the default resources, you can always use your own content instead.

Your game will have to be set up inside Unity (I'm using the free version, fyi). But~ I'm making it easy to customize so you won’t need coding knowledge to make edits! I'll try my best to make as much of the game as easily customizable as possible. I will also try to add many optional features that you can choose to include in your game or not. If you want to add new features that the game doesn’t include or entirely change the existing ones, you will have to code that yourself in c#.

Technically, the game you decide to make with this doesn’t need to be limited to animals. You could use humans or anthros instead if you want. But keep in mind, the resources that’ll be included with the source code will be animal based.

Aside from the main details, this option could open up more opportunity for content creators to pour their skills into, like here on FH and on IT servers. Making and selling content you made or taking commissions for custom content is a possibility for you. You also don't actually need the source code to make content. Just the free version of Unity. Really, you would only need the source code to make your own codes.

Disclaimer (not sure why I feel the need to put this here, but oh well):

There is a slim chance I might go another route that I didn't mention. I guess that means this isn't 100% solid... I just need some help thinking about this, so if you have any useful input, I would appreciate it. That includes if you have a third option I could take.

And before I wrap up this post, I ask that you please be respectful of my choice to involve money in my project... I just don't have the time and money to hand you something like this for absolute no cost. I apologize for refusing to do that.

Community Activities Hub / Animal Games Forum!
« on: February 03, 2017, 10:17:17 pm »
Hey, long time no see!

Hope it's alright that I advertise here. If not, then I apologize.

I just finished up a forum that's meant to gather the animal based indie game community, and not just FH and IT. The forum also provides a section for developers to collaborate, share progress, give/get advice, release content, and more.

I will be making plenty of threads with tutorials, guides, and general advice on game development and public presentation whenever I'm able to. So, if you're interested, maybe hop on board and keep eye out (and also share what you have to offer, as I'm not expecting me to be the only one contributing to the community).

Here's the link: http://animal-games.boards.net

I hope to see some of you guys there!

Game Help / Markings aren't showing up on character
« on: July 16, 2016, 05:49:35 am »
I just downloaded the new update and wanted to check things out. My home internet just shut off for the night (don't ask me to explain, it's not relevant to my problem here anyway) and I'm not able to login for the time being.

So, I decided to mess with the preset maker being stuck offline. As I did that, I found that none of the markings I selected showed up on the character. The character doesn't even turn white. The markings just aren't there. I checked my texure files, marking file, and resource file to see if anything was wrong. Everything looks fine.

This is only in the preset maker, as far as I know. I have no idea if it'll be the same when I log in and create a character or what it'll look like when I roam around ingame just yet. I'll let you know when I have internet again.

Also, switching the rendering subsystem changes nothing for me. It does the same thing with Direct3D9 and OpenGL.

Other Games / Unique and improved FH & IT game idea
« on: July 13, 2016, 08:06:05 am »
All I really want right now is feedback on whether or not this game would be desirable within the FH and IT communities. This game is only an idea and will not be completed or even begin development for a long time.

What about the game being raleted to FH and IT?

The game would be similar to FH and IT, but more refined and include many more features. It will definitely have it's own spices to seperate it from FH and any of the online IT servers. An exact, or near exact, replica would just be absurd.

Is this game meant to be a replacement of FH and IT?

Absolutely not. It will be its own entity, and I in no way want to replace something that people love. It'll simply be available for those who want to play and enjoy the features that the game will have.

What features will the game have that is similar to FH and IT?

  • Multiple playable species
  • Character customisation
  • Presets
  • Prey
  • Pets
  • Items
  • The ability to make/add your own items
  • The ability to make/add your own character customization
  • The ability to make/add your own maps
  • Map maker
  • Weather maker
  • Preset maker
  • Object maker
  • Sharing custom items, maps, presets, and other character customizations through download

What features will the game have that FH an IT don't have?

  • No more having to deal with Ogre and confusing manual converting! Yay!
  • Map maker: land scupting and texture painting tools
  • Map maker: river and lake tools
  • Map maker: Music/ambience/sfx tools
  • Preset and object maker: material editing tools
  • Weather maker: more weather variety and refined editing options
  • Adding an item maker; item importer and managing tools, also including material editing tools
  • Allowing items and objects to be rigged
  • System that allows custom items and other character customizations to not depend on a list order and display properly for other players who download them
  • Implemented exporter/converter for maps, items, objects, and presets for sharing so they cannot be stolen and used for other games (will also include permanent credits to the creator of the content and forced usage permissions so they also can't be stolen or misused within the game)
  • Open world; no seperate official maps
  • A single portal that will take you to any custom map you've downloaded
  • Teleportation options for quick travelling, but only to specific predetermined spots
  • And much more

I should also add that this game will be heavily forused on roleplay and chat. Don't expect it to have any survival features like WolfQuest. It will not be a wildlife simulator. Features that have not been listed on this post will only be included if it enhances the roleplaying experience.

With that said, feel free to share more ideas if you happen to have any. Otherwise, let me know how you feel about this project.

If you've noticed my other game idea/project threads (if not, feel free to skip reading the rest of this post):

*insert manly heroic voice for no reason at all*
"But aren't you working on a Warrior Cats game? And what about that other mmorpg you mentioned forever ago? When are these ideas going to stop?"

Don't worry concerned reader. It'll be kept on my to do list for years to come (I know that doesn't sound promising at all, forgive me).

The mmorpg is also on my to do list, and it will very much be made. Sometime. In the far, far future when I know the quality of my games are a little more than just decent (it'll be big, and intertwined with the stories of my novels I'm writing. I am personally, overly obsessed with them and have been for over 10 years so I can guarantee you that I wont lose interest. It is my eternal fandom).

As for the WC game. That will be completed before any of the other games I come up with begin development, including this one here. Don't worry about the WC game suddenly disappearing into the abyss of no return. I wont let that happen.

Other Games / Warrior Cats Game! - Recruiting Developers
« on: April 15, 2016, 07:40:01 am »
UPDATES:

We currently have 5 developers.

I've made a list of development stages that will be tackled one by one in a specific order, and each stage has a set of assignments for the developers to work on. Any developer can do any assignment in the current development stage.

Developers will also be expected to share their ideas for the assignments and DISCUSS them with the rest of the team. After they are dicussed and accepted by me, I will put them down in the board of official information where all developers can see.

This is all just to make sure developers know what they should be doing, have the ability to share input and further develop or refine the idea, and have the ability look up what we've already planned for the game.

Developers will be expected to join the skype group conversation where we discuss the development of the game together. This is to give everyone realtime input and also speed up the development. Further information will be pm'ed to you if I decide you qualify to join the development.

Concept artists will no longer be recommended to draw in the game's art style; they're allowed to draw in any style they please. However, model and level references will be REQUIRED to be drawn in the game's art style (when they are needed, but at the moment they are not). Concept artists at this stage of development will not be expected to do model and level references. Only if they can and want to when the time comes.

We will NOT be doing multiple storylines where the player can choose the outcome (if you saw that in the departments list). We have one solid storyline. We also have static player characters that will not be customizable. There are three main characters, but the player wont be able to choose which one to play as. The player will be playing all three throughout the story as it demands. (This information is only to correct what was already said for potential future developers. No further information about the development will be revealed publicly.)

--------------

I've started a project that I will be directing. It is a Warrior Cats game. I am looking for developers who will bring this project to life, however, developers will not be paid for their work. When the game is released, no money will be required to play. No money whatsoever will be gained from it. The game will be single player with a unique story, and will be made in Blender 3D and Unreal Engine.

Currently, 3D modelers, texture artists, animators, level designers, or coders are not needed yet. First, we will be working on creating the story, characters, and depicting their surrounding world with writing and concept art. Developers at this stage will be given the opportunity to create the story, characters, and world themselves. I will mostly be observing and critiquing the work to bring out it's best potential for a good quality game.

This project is heavily focusing on creativity right now. The developers are the ones bringing the game to life by introducing their OWN ideas and weaving them together.

Keep in mind that I, the director, will be making that everything works together properly. I will be expecting a professional attitude from all developers, as I will be molding the ideas where they need work to fit into the picture, or even entirely rejecting them if they will not be able work with the rest of the development.

Team work will be a crucial part of this project. Developers NEED to be able to work in a team and collaborate. Throwing around ideas with each other is exactly what I expect, but I also expect these ideas to go somewhere and for developers to agree on something. Not only will this have to be done in a single department, but many departments together.

Below are the available departments you can join for current development. Obviously related departments will be working very closely together, such as the World Building and World Concept Art departments. Other important department collaborations that you need to know about are mentioned at the bottom of the list. In actuality, all departments are working together. I will be encouraging collaboration where needed and making sure everyone is given the information they need.

A side note: If a concept artist is unable to copy the game's art style, expect others who can to revision their concept art to fit. Concept art will not be required to replicate the game's art style exactly, but it needs to be able to depict the key features of the style. This is to make sure future developers such as 3D modelers know what they need to create. The style itself will be to help everything blend and look pleasing (we're not putting cartoon cats and a hyper realistic forest together).

Feel free to suggest other positions that you think the early development of this game will benefit from. If they are important enough at this stage, I will add them to the list.

This project is being hosted on my website's forum. http://caligosus.com/forum If you are joining the project, left me know here first and then inform me of who you are when you sign up. Do not join my forum if you're hoping to simply keep updated on the progress of this project. The progress will NOT be public.

Go ahead and ask me anything.

Other Games / Z.O. Animal & Fantasy Creature Based MMORPG
« on: November 24, 2015, 08:52:12 am »
I've been planning this game for a while now and I think maybe I want to start making it. This is not going to be an IT server, btw. I also don't have the money to host a server, so I'm going to make a single player rpg version first (with a story obviously) before the mmorpg.

The completed game will include all sorts of realistic animals, well known fantasy creatures, and some original never before seen creatures imagined by yours truly. There will also be a plethora of awesome features to maximize the interactiveness of your roleplay experience with other players, and creative freedom in character and level creation.

This game is going to be a huge project that will take a lot of time to make... And to be honest, I have nothing other than concept art right now. Although, I do have a forum I am setting up, along with it's own wiki for the game/story. This is definitely something I want to complete though, as I think it will be amazing to have an interactive experience inside the world of my own personal novel series I am writing, which this game will be based around.

Do you think it's too early to try starting a community for this game and ask for support? If you guys think it's not too early, I will gladly provid the link to the forum so anyone can join.

Also, I don't know if I want to ask for a team to help me make the game because I want this to be professional quality... I'm just not sure if many people here meet the standards of what I am looking for. But finding actual professional people ouside of a place like this would definitely require having to pay them, and I don't have the money to hire people whatsoever...

Member Bio & Journals / Alphabet Soup [Journal]
« on: November 22, 2015, 08:47:36 am »
[Nov 22, 2015]

I think I need a small break from the forum. I'll still be working on my projects and requests, but I need to get away from the internet for a bit.

[Apr 8, 2016]

Sometimes I don't know why I come to this place... Why I have an account here. I don't really socialize with anyone, roleplay, or go ingame.

Maybe it was my terrible fascination of improving this game in any way possible... But I don't think changing FH is really something I should even attempt anymore. Besides, it all ends up making me frustrated in the end and next thing I know I'm getting my head into making my own game. But then that gets tossed aside because I'm lazy.

This all probably sounds rude. I don't know.

At least there is one thing I did enjoy, and did it for the sake of seeing the community smile. Making meshes for people. Yeah, I disappeared again and left things unfinished. But....... Do I dare blame that on something...?

Why not. Life has been busy. In a different way than even I would have expected, to be honest. I've been going through some tough times, fixing my shattered self, but also stubbled upon an interesting fellow (irl).

As much as I told myself I'd never have feelings for someone again due to something that happened a year ago, the universe came back and slapped me in the face. But it was a good, loving slap, I suppose... Although I've only known this person for a few months, they've become one of my closest friends and more.

Yeah, I'm talking about love. Have some crackers with a mountain of cheese fondue. But I have never felt so secure around someone in my entire life. I literally bawled my eyes out the other day because I was so happy and wondering to myself if this human being was even real. Seriously, they're like the unicorn of mankind. All the deep personal things we've talked about, and the things they said to me, all of my darkest fears were washed away.

Sadly, we're not really a couple at the moment, but that doesn't mean we wont be. We are dating though and have already talked about being one. Both of us had actually agreed on waiting for the right time. Letting things go with the flow rather than rushing into it. If that makes sense... We both have some fairly fresh wounds, so we're making sure those aren't opened up again.

Um... Yeah. That's my life right now. Again, not really sure why I'm here or making this journal (lol). Maybe I might attempt to get back into making meshes, mainly finishing the ones I promised to make... Idk. We'll see.

Discussion Board / Snapchat
« on: November 22, 2015, 01:48:30 am »
What are your thoughts about Snapchat? Love it? Hate it? Indifferent? Have no idea what Snapchat even is??

I decided to bring this up because I'm actually wonder if anyone uses it and wants to Snapchat each other. Lol. Just let me know if you want to, I guess.

But anyway. I'm somewhat indifferent about it; I don't really love it, and sometimes I hate it. I mostly use it to chat with my cousin because he's too lazy to text (??). But I'll be honest, it is kind of fun to include photos and drawings when you chat with someone. Or just send each other random funny crap. I'm pretty infamous for sending random crap that I think is funny, whether or not anyone else might find it funny... Yeah.

Discussion Board / Video Tutorial / Livestream?
« on: November 19, 2015, 12:52:28 pm »
I've been thinking about how should go about making my custom mesh tutorial, and I think I might go with a video tutorial instead of a written one. I just thought maybe a video tutorial would help more people?

In this custom mesh tutorial, I will:
- Route you to all of the necessary tools and help you set them up
- Teach the basics of how to use Blender (for creating simple models)
- Walk you through making your first model
- Show you how to texture your model
- Talk about materials and what everything (or almost everything) in the material files mean (maybe also teach you several awesome effects you can do)
- And then show you how to import your mesh into FH

Hmm... That is quite a lot of information to go through. Do you guys think I should split up these tutorials a bit and create different tutorial videos / livestream sessions dedicated to a specific subject mentioned above?

About the livestream thing I keep mentioning, since my screen recording program I have doesn't work on my new laptop, I decided that I would use YouTube to record instead, but that also opens up the possibility to do a livestream (otherwise I'll just stream myself privately and then release the video publicly when I'm finished). I could also try to answer any questions you guys have while livestreaming.

How many of you would be willing to attend my livestreams, assuming you'll be available somewhere between 6am-11pm MST (mountain standard time) any day of the week?

If watching my livestream is something you're interested in, let me know what time (include your time zone) and day you'll be available so I can try to plan on that. Feel free to pm me if you're not comfortable posting that information publicly.
