Comment what species you guys would want to play as the most! It can be any species you want. The most popular one I'll work on modelling in both feral and anthro form first and get them put in the game. Maybe I'll try to get a small offline demo out that you guys can mess around with.

So far I have 2 votes for felines and 1 vote for foxes.

As for updates on the game, I ended up recoding the character controller since I guess I wasn't doing it right lol. Now it's using the proper codes for moving around. Yay! Also, a big thanks to Athert for being so kind to help me!

I have a discord server where I'll be posting my progress on this game! Please also stick around to have some fun with the other members!

Well. I'm slowly coding an online game right now and I've been trying to decide what its fate should be. My main problem is that I don't have the money to host a server if it gets big enough. Maybe I can figure something out, but I'm feeling doubtful. My other option would be to sell the source code to you guys.

Before I make a decision, though... What would you prefer to see happen?

Don't sell the source code and keep the game on one server.

While the game itself would be free, it'll include some paid features and a premium membership to help pay for the servers. Keep in mind, this won't take away from the fun of the game! Think of Cereal Soup, if you will. The last I checked, they were doing premium memberships and maybe some other paid stuff (please correct me if I'm wrong). The game itself is still free and you can still have fun playing it with your friends without paying anything at all.

The game's development will follow what I have planned for it. It’ll definitely be more than a simple virtual roleplay/chatroom. There will be more things to keep you entertained, such as kill mobs, collect items, gain skills, do story quests, and possibly more. I would like to go passed what IT and CS are currently, although, I'll be focusing on getting the game caught up with them first (gotta take one step at a time, and I want to be sure everything is working with minimal bugs before I get into bigger stuff).

I most likely will not allow custom content to be inserted into the game (unless it becomes a premium feature), but I wouldn't mind taking some ideas that I like offered from the community and putting them into the game for everyone to enjoy.

Sell the source code of the game so people can make their own server.

You'll be required to pay in order to get your hands on the source code of the game and host it yourself (sorry guys, figured I should try to make a living off of my work somehow). It'll come with a set of default models, animations, textures, maps, and etc. that you can use. If you don’t want to use the default resources, you can always use your own content instead.

Your game will have to be set up inside Unity (I'm using the free version, fyi). But~ I'm making it easy to customize so you won’t need coding knowledge to make edits! I'll try my best to make as much of the game as easily customizable as possible. I will also try to add many optional features that you can choose to include in your game or not. If you want to add new features that the game doesn’t include or entirely change the existing ones, you will have to code that yourself in c#.

Technically, the game you decide to make with this doesn’t need to be limited to animals. You could use humans or anthros instead if you want. But keep in mind, the resources that’ll be included with the source code will be animal based.

Aside from the main details, this option could open up more opportunity for content creators to pour their skills into, like here on FH and on IT servers. Making and selling content you made or taking commissions for custom content is a possibility for you. You also don't actually need the source code to make content. Just the free version of Unity. Really, you would only need the source code to make your own codes.

Disclaimer (not sure why I feel the need to put this here, but oh well):

There is a slim chance I might go another route that I didn't mention. I guess that means this isn't 100% solid... I just need some help thinking about this, so if you have any useful input, I would appreciate it. That includes if you have a third option I could take.

And before I wrap up this post, I ask that you please be respectful of my choice to involve money in my project... I just don't have the time and money to hand you something like this for absolute no cost. I apologize for refusing to do that.

That's not too bad! I need to dust off the little knowledge I have of C# and learn more so I'm prepared for this, haha.

With the source available, it's inevitable for it to become similar to IT, which means some servers will have more added species. If some players prefer to stay with canine and feline only, they can simply find or create a server that only has those two species available.

I dont think athert will share his source code, lol. He tries to do the game by himself, not offering the whole code to anyone, but implementing features so you can add things by yourself.
That is a huge difference :)

My apologies. I thought I read somewhere in the thread that he would share the source. I suppose I am mistaken.

EDIT:

I re-read the entire thread to double check and it seems it was your post that confused me. I was reading quickly the first time and figured it was about sharing the source code, but it seems I was wrong. You were referring to the source code of the engine itself, no...?

But how do you plan to solve the issue that the free unity version wont offer access to the source code and the online player limit is 20 user at the same time?
I once looked into that myself, and only the pro versions, which cost a good amount of money, allow full access to the source + being able to have multiplayer over the amount of 20 players at a time.

Hope you dont use a ripped off version that got cracked thou. cause that would cause a lot of trouble.

I kinda feel like there's a bit of comparing CS to FH going on. I guess I sort of understand why, but it's a different game that wasn't intended to have the same features.

Anyway. Beautiful game and creating characters is fun. I had a bad experience in the original discord chat that was closed down though. Not with the CS staff, that I know of, or some of them might be staff now, idk. I think they were close to the staff, at least. I haven't really been keeping track ever since... Anxiety issues. Which is ironically (but also only partially) what the bad experience was about. I got thrown into some drama going on... :/

However, don't let my bad experience stop you. A lot of people enjoy CS and say the community is awesome.

Hey, long time no see!

Hope it's alright that I advertise here. If not, then I apologize.

I just finished up a forum that's meant to gather the animal based indie game community, and not just FH and IT. The forum also provides a section for developers to collaborate, share progress, give/get advice, release content, and more.

I will be making plenty of threads with tutorials, guides, and general advice on game development and public presentation whenever I'm able to. So, if you're interested, maybe hop on board and keep eye out (and also share what you have to offer, as I'm not expecting me to be the only one contributing to the community).

Here's the link: http://animal-games.boards.net

I hope to see some of you guys there!

Forum Suggestions & Ideas / Re: More gender options?
« on: July 21, 2016, 07:50:22 am »

And nature, which the game emulates.

MMM yes nature like dragons and sparkledogs

Lmfao!

there could be an infinite amount of "tumblr genders," meaning the list would need to be constantly updated

A simple "other" and "none" would suffice, actually. xD No need to worry about naming every single non-binary gender. The "other" option would also be forgiving to intersex people who embrace their ambiguity and choose not to surgically change their bits to binary. They do exist.

Thank you!

Yes! It also means no more boxy terrain if your map is big. That has always bothered me... When I try to make a smooth slope, it ends up being jagged. qq And it'll be easier to create the terrain you want. I have a hard time visualising the terrain on a height map (I'm sure many others do). This feature would just be a god send in every way.

By npc I meant any ai that isn't a player, including prey and pets. I should've used ai to describe them instead. I apologize for causing a misunderstanding. There wont be any actual npcs in the game.

What I meant by my statement was that the difference between prey/pets and players wouldn't be distinguishable. That's why I was thinking of not including them. If a pack of wolves want to hunt an elk, how would they know if the elk is prey or a player? There would be a lot of harassment, even if by accident.

So, if a pack of wolves want to hunt an elk, they would have to pretend or find a player who is willing to play along. Players will be able to play as just about anything; when someone needs an elk, an actual elk would be available anywhere at anytime.

If players would want ai prey that badly, I think I would rather add a special token with infinite uses that spawns whatever you need. However, the token would be limited from one to five ai's at a time, limited to spawning ai's according to how many are in one area, timed for automatic despawn with a cushion time before respawning is allowed, and obtained by purchasing with real money (all to prevent spamming and overloading the server with spawned ai's).
