I think I've got a virus ;_;
« on: December 14, 2013, 09:57:20 am »
I was searching for a water shader mod for minecraft and I came across the Finite Liquid mod on Google, it was one of those links that begin the download automatically and so when it finished downloading every program I had open crashed and closed with this error:

Once that happens then the program won't open unless it's 'Run as Administrator' which I can't do when I want to open videos, music or images. I have to open the program and manually select every file I want to preview. In the Control Panel I can't click any of the blue links so I cannot uninstall any programs or anything. If I try to type a command in the Command Prompt it comes up with Access Denied.

I've downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and used it to scan my computer, it said it found the viruses and then deleted them but I'm still experiencing problems. Now I'm trying Microsoft Security Essentials and it's taking over 6+ hours to scan my computer and if it comes up with nothing I'm gonna be mad (I've been sitting here all day waiting for it to finish) D:<

I haven't told my mum about it considering she's really upset that the car is now broken and she can't afford to fix it so we'll be missing out on a lot of planned visits and trips for the holidays. Plus this is also my new laptop after all and I'm really worried how she will react. I've never had a virus before so I'm not exactly sure what to do. I live in a really small rural area and where I bought the laptop is an hour away by car. I know there's a computer fixing home business here but I don't know if they deal with viruses or just fixing broken screens and stuff.

I'm not sure if I still have my one year warranty on the laptop? I've heard restoring my laptop to factory settings would get rid of the virus but I would have to back up all my files on a USB or something, right? I'm just worried I might infect my USB or hard drive.

In desperate need of help here, would anyone have a solution? D:

It seems you may have downloaded and installed the Mod incorrectly, or you have indeed accidentally came across a virus.

What I suggest is doing a System Restore. You might be familiar with the term, and it will help you restore FeralHeart's original files which looks as if it is corrupted from the download.

If you're unaware of this tool, simply follow these links below for easy guidance.

Windows 7: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/system-restore-windows-7.htm

Windows 8: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/3443387/how-use-system-restore-in-windows-8/

I hope this helps. ;)

Dem pesky viruses.... >:U Sorry to heard your PC may have contracted one. Viruses can latch on through anything from the internet, even just going onto a webpage can infect your PC though JavaScript. (The program your PC uses to go on the internet and read the webpage. Viruses are usually self-replicating programs that make unauthorized changes to your PC. They can be small and just make your PC slow, or they can do many other things, including hack into orher accounts, slowly delete all stored memory from your PC, or even take screenshots of whatever you're doing. But don't fret, some you can get rid of quite simply. (But not all the time sadly .-.)

It's good you're downloaded MalwareBytes. I would have told you to do exactly that. It is one of the best FREE anti-virus programs out there. I used it before I got my Trend Mirco Titanium (Which is around 100 USD). May I ask, do you know the names of the viruses it said it found? Some viruses aren't fully deleted by that sometimes. Some can even be triggered by opening a file randomly.

Next, I'd try and set all of your internet security settings as high as they can go. Yes, this may seem pointless, but it really isn't it protects you from bad sites and bad downloads.

Next, get all your important files such as pictures and videos on a USB. Nothing like .exes or things like that though.

Next, go to your task manager, I'm not sure how it's found on your PC but a few you right click the bottom left hand corner, and see what programs are running currently and in the background. Most viruses will show up there, that is, unless they are bulit not to. If there is something that you've never seen running, please tell me the name of it. Again, knowing it's name will be very helpful. Also, you could try ending the process. (I'm not to sure how this will effect your PC)

Also, I'm not sure if your PC has this, but if it shows the location of the program in the Task manager, please say. It will most likely to be in your C: drive.

Next, you should try scanning again. If it finds anything else, delete it immedatly.

If all of this fails, I'm afraid you may have to see a local PC specialist. :c Some can't be deleted with normal equipment.

Also, the post above may also help. PC system restore can sometimes help with this. :

Thanks you two for replying.

Windows Security Essentials detected the problems and deleted them, everything on my pc returned to its normal state, yay! I was so relieved but I shut down my computer to attend to some chores and the problem came right back :\ Not exactly sure what happened there.

I remember in the past that my mum said that a system restore stuffed up her computer some how, so if all comes to worse I will turn to that as a last resort.

Nothing unusual is showing up in Task Manager I'm afraid, I'll try another scan with Windows Security Essentials and see what happens then.

Thanks again guys :)
