Most PCs come with windows movie maker which is free for anyone to use.

Though if you are completely new to the video editing hobby you'd have to get to know how to work around with the program first.

actually WMM supports:
Video files: .asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv
a bit complicated to remember, but it does support video files. i would usually prefer .wmv instead of all the others, but .avi is also pretty common...

Aye.. As mentioned above.

Just make sure you have the needed codec installed on your computer to handle the files.
