Oh, a year ye say? 'Ave ye tried checking y'er particles folder f'er copies of files? If this issue has been like this f'er a year, 'tis best to just check y'er particles folder just in case of copies. Particle file copies can cause the game to crash upon trying to open it.

If there are no files ending with _0, _1, and et cetera, 'tis probably best to do a clean installation of the game. Ye can do this by deleting all the game files and reinstalling the game.
