How low poly is good?
« on: June 21, 2011, 08:27:45 pm »
Ok, so i was wondering, im making a map and some objects i wanna add have diffrent poly counts, so what range is good?

this is what Thierry said

I recomend you to search models with 100 to 4000 faces, search for models labeled "for game" or "low poly", and with textures Smiley
so, the performance of FH can be low if you use too much models with too much faces.

Do you guys agree? xD

Well, if you get other things, your game may run slower.

High poly meshes are a contributor to lag for players with computers that aren't the best or most recent models.

A 100-4000 range is a good range to stay in to reduce the likelihood of lag. Though I personally like to extend the range to about 5000. Only because I know if my computer can handle it, 90% of the rest of the community can too.

That is something I would lag quite a lot with even if there was only one instance of the object in a map. (Heck, if it were in my blender, i would be lagging so much I'd be unable to set textures to it or even export. my program would stall)

Uh well. I just dunno about Faces, but imagine: Feline Model has arround just 2000 Vertices. Too many user on screen = Lag.

you can put a 40000 faces mesh, but if you put a lot of 40000 faces meshes, old computers will reduce the FPS (frames per Second), or bad saying "LAG"
For example, I have a mesh with 80 triangles, i use it 100 times (80x100=8000) doesn't reduce to much the FPS.
Also it depends the screen resolution, lower resolution will increase FPS (reduce video lag).

I have an old computer (7 years old), with a graphics acelerator nvidia GeForce 5500 Fx (old graphics card), bonfire make me to suffer with 1 to 4 FPS even at lower resolution.
You need to test yourself how many faces is a lot, having consideration on medium old computers. "if runs fine on your computer, it will run acceptable in mine".

ok thanks everyone! i think i will make two versons of the map, EPIC (which has higher poly stuff) and NOT SO EPIC (which has lower xD) to apeal to a wider range of people, cus i can do almost anything with my computer, but older computers might scream and die O.e
