There's a legend on my dad's side of the family that back in the mid-1800s, a forefather of ours was a soldier fighting in the American Civil War. He'd been wounded and left to die on the battlefield, but was found by a Cherokee (native american) woman who realized that he was still alive, and saved his life. As the story goes, the two fell in love, and had children that would eventually wind its way to my dad's side of the family, and also accounts for the native american blood we have in our family (though it's diluted with a generous helping of Irish, Swede, and German at this point xD).
We have the soldier's name, but the legend is unconfirmed without the Cherokee woman's name ever being recorded. So, the legend has sorta been passed down by word of mouth in the family.
It may very well be untrue, but I like the thought of it, anyway. c:
