Help! Can't read material files?!

I'm not sure why but I can't read them, and none of the reading programs read them! I was trying to edit them to make different presets and objects and such, but they won't open! I have Windows 7, and all the updated software. But am I missing something?! Is there a program that reads material files that came with the game? I'm really confused about that. Thanks for the help ahead of time!

Have you tried notepad? I have 7 and that's what I use.

Hehe Yes! I even have a Jareth charrie/preset<3, when I made the charrie I didn't know that movie was so well know XD
