News Archives / Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas...
« on: December 25, 2020, 06:47:45 pm »
... Let your heart be light. From now on your troubles will be out of sight.

As another year comes to a close, we on the staff team want to thank you all for continuing to join us in this adventure that is Feral Heart. Together we have overcome the challenges of 2020 and now set our sights ahead towards 2021! What exciting surprises wait along the horizon? Come along with us again and let’s find out together! On behalf of the entire Feral Heart Staff team Merry Christmas & Happy New Year floofs!

“It's been another year, and with each starry night the next one gets closer. We've all had our own challenges to face, each one making us stronger, wiser. We've won some, we've lost some, and we're still here. So let us make the most of the new year, to laugh and play, to face new challenges, and achieve new goals.”

- VortexAlive

“Though we never could have anticipated the challenges, losses, and hardships of 2020 it hasn’t stopped us from trudging forward. No matter the odds or daunting uncertainties it is because we’ve worked together that we now stand at the threshold of a new year. While the world’s been seemingly tossed upside down, there’s one thing that will always stand the test of time, and that’s humanity’s indomitable spirit to overcome and to have hope.  As we grasp at the possibility of a new beginning, let us remember to reflect on the lives of those around us. Let us not forget those both far and wide & come and gone who have all played a role in helping our world reach another year.

Here at Feral Heart I want to thank everyone for helping to make this little game a safe space and refuge for so many, especially this year. Through out it’s time online, Feral Heart has always remained a hub for friendship and unity because of the boundless love, devotion, and support from its community. We wouldn’t still be here a decade later if it wasn’t for each of your contributions. Wishing you and all your kin a very safe but Happy Holiday & New Year! Cheers to a better 2021 and another year forward with Feral Heart!

Floofs Forever”

~Lord Suragaha

I hope you all have been staying safe and well! Let's see what this new year brings....2021 here we come!”

- Ame

“Greetings to all the floofs!! I would like to thank everyone for your support in not only FeralHeart, but also for each other during these challenging times. It takes a wonderful community for a game to survive throughout the years. Every one of you holds a special place here and your efforts to bring friendship and positivity make FeralHeart a better place each and every day. I hope you are all able to relax and enjoy time spent with loved ones this Holiday season, and may 2021 be a brighter year. Happy Holidays everyone!!”

Patch Bug Reports / How to get your mini map to the right side
« on: October 15, 2020, 12:39:41 am »
Reposting the information since it was lost from the original post:

Due to a mistake in the 1.17 Update an overlay file to use the minimap moved back to the left side.

Until it is moved back to its correct place within a future official patch you can use this to fix it:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QJxQisNVxunJD6PB_BUfrkgwhfCppYMN/view?usp=sharing
Download this and put it into the media/overlays/overlay2 folder.

With 1.17 a new animation got added called "TailScale". Since most of the custom animations doesn't have this, they will just crash the game.

To make them work you (or the creator of the animations) just has to add this one animation to the skeleton.

In this post I'll show you the fastest way of doing this.

First off all you will need Ogre command line tools. (https://sourceforge.net/projects/ogre/files/ogre-tools/1.7.2/OgreCommandLineTools_1.7.2.zip/download)

Extract the zip to somewhere.

Grab your custom skeleton file and pull it over OgreXMLConverter.exe. A black window will pop up and when it disappears you should have a f/cbody.skeleton.xml next to your original skeleton file.

Open it up in a text editor  (notepad for example) and search for <animations>.
Hit an enter (so you have an empty line after <animations>) and paste everything from the respective text files in:
canines: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HYsjjD-QPPpkaEUpR_wIddmTUTjLmpDe/view
felines: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mwH234_c6tAprHgIaXMKYuTImrnlm-az/view

Save the .skeleton.xml and convert it back with the XML converter. You should see the newly converted c/fbody.skeleton popping up.

Copy it into your game and you should be all set and done.

News Archives / FH Official Newsletter: Summer 2020
« on: August 06, 2020, 04:37:33 am »
A review of things that have happened during this season thus far & some new things to come:
Warm sun beams and sweet watermelons abound! That's right folks it's summer! How are you beating the heat and spending your vacations? Having fun but staying safe we hope? Around Feral Heart things have been bustling so it's time to give you all a short status on whats gone on the last few months.

Board & Site Changes
Some of the notable additions and changes:

With so many working from home, the staff had a little extra time to sit down and gets some forum spring/summer cleaning in. You may have already noticed a few little changes.

In an effort to reduce clutter, refresh, and neaten up the Index page a number of boards were either moved, merged, and renamed. Some boards that were no longer in use were removed or repurposed completely. Board descriptions were also rewritten to be less wordy and instead more concise. Here's a little comparison:

The old forum ranks were finally changed to better fit the Feral Heart game and community theme better but also to add something fresh and fun to the mix. The staff and community had a bit too much fun coming up with the new forum ranks... as usual we got a little carried away in mischief and creativity. While there were some disagreements with some over the first edition we all worked together and shared our ideas to create a final edition that everyone was happy with. Click the spoiler button for an in depth explanation of the changes.

Old forum ranks:

Newbie
Jr. Member
Sr. Member
Experienced Member
Dedicated Member
Full Member
Elder Member
Elite Member
Hero Member
Legendary Member

The OG old forum ranks were changed after the community submitted various suggestions through the forum discussion board, anonymous forum poll, Tumblr, & Instagram. After going through a couple different community suggestions a number of suggestions stuck out as potentially the most fitting for the Feral Heart theme. Staff discussed these select submissions thoroughly. Our goal was to keep the ranks fun, Feral Heart related, fresh, and more unique than the original generic rank names we’ve kept for years. We also wanted to make them feel more friendly and not just competitive.

First Edition of the New Ranks: (They were partly liked but the community felt that they needed improvements):

Forum Newcomer
Small Paws
Grounds Dweller
Familiar Fur
Friend of Ferals
Grey Pelt
Finest Floof
Community Champion
Silver Pelt
Heart of a Feral
Lasting Legacy

While a number of users liked these new ranks and saw them as a refreshing friendlier less competitive ranking system a handful expressed otherwise. The Elder members rank in particular was missed. Some expressed that the newer ranks didn’t have a progressive feeling to them either. Suggestions were made to switch the order of certain ranks and remove or reword others. After careful consideration we reworked the new rank names around again. Thank you again for all your feedback, patience through out the process, and good humor with the temporary Elderly rank place holder as we sorted it out:

Second Final Edition of the New Ranks:

Forum newcomer
Curious Wanderer
Familiar Grounds Dweller
Experienced Traveler
Dedicated Supporter
Finest Floof
Pack & Pride Representative
Community Champion
Elder Grey Pelt
Ancient Silver Mane
Honored Hero
Immortal Legend

A brief explanation of some of the suggestions and why they were incorporated into the final edition:

Forum Newcomer: So veteran players of the game who join the forum don’t have the generalized Newbie rank.

Curious Wander: Incorporates the “Wanderer” title (Batch Four) and concept suggested by Bawfle in her forum post as well as other community member variation suggestions of the rank.

Familiar Grounds Dweller: Influenced by community poll & Torskite’s suggestion to incorporate some map specific ranks.

Experienced Traveler: Incorporates the “traveler” title (Batch Four) and concept suggested by Bawfle in her forum post as well as old rank name “Experienced Member”.

Dedicated Supporter: Refreshed community poll suggestion for old “Dedicated Member” rank.

Finest Floof: Torskite, Esarosa, A.P.S, & other frequently requested community suggestion to add “Floof” themed ranks.

Pack & Pride Representative: A mix of A.P.S & community suggestions for “lion/pride wolf/pack themed” ranks as well as Bawfle rank name suggestion for “representative” (Batch Four)

Community Champion: community poll suggestion.

Elder Grey Pelt & Ancient Silver Mane:
We know you guys missed your elders ranks ;) (looking at you WolfDog01 & Birdie. Originally the plan was for the elder themed ranks to automatically go back to you guys but due to Forum Games posts recently bumping up a number of people’s posts counts and a few other changes & additional ranks some of you elders have returned to youth <\3 I’m sorry) Lucius gave the nice suggestion to differentiate both a bit with the “mane” instead of Pelt for both.

Honored Hero: A mix of community poll suggestion & old rank title “Hero Member”.

Immortal Legend: A mix of community poll suggestion & old rank title “Legendary Member”

I’m sorry if I left any names out but thank you all for your wonderful suggestions for the ranks.

Elderly Rank System: RIP <\3 We’ll miss all you boomers. Gone but not forgotten lol.

Whippersnapper
Denture User
Arthritis
Bingo All Nighter
Mmm Metamucil
Poligrip that Prune Juice
Get Off My Lawn
Ok Boomer
Fallen & Can’t Get Up
I can’t Remember
Tombstones & Dust

Old/New Feral Heart. Old/New maps etc. The ever on going debate...

Since I see this topic come up so much, I want to just get it out there. How I see it:

The time for the old maps returning to “bring” back the old community & feeling is long gone over. The staff had their chance. Too much time has passed since they were removed, and the community has greatly changed in that time. That was something that was supposed to be fixed immediately after the 2016 patch. Had it been done sooner we may have been able to earn back the trust and confidence lost by the community of then. The fact that it was never allowed to happen has only further exasperated issues that could have been resolved otherwise.

Now is that me saying that nothing can be done about it? No. Of course not. The old maps could be brought back and I’d honestly love to see that as well as other staff. (That’s up to Raz though.) But what I mean is that from now on the focus is forward. What’s done was done and the goals forward can’t be solely focused on bringing back “old Feral Heart”. Old Feral Heart is gone. No amount of bringing back old maps will bring back old Feral Heart as old Feral Heart was a product of its time, its place in the world of games, generation’s culture, its community, etc. To get back old Feral Heart would require going back to a time when things were vastly different on so many different scales. As much as I am a nostalgic person that’s just not how life works. To survive and thrive is to adapt, and to adapt is to accept change and change with it.

If you miss and loved the old Feral Heart and maps  (as I do too so very much) your feelings are still very valid but take this all into consideration.

Bringing back the old maps will not change much though. It’s a temporary thing. The old user base is not going to keep this game going for years to come. Neither are the old maps returning. What keeps the game going and going well is the community itself and the game’s relevance to that community in its time and needs.

There are people who are around now that arrived and have grown up to the game without those old maps, ex: like Dark_heart who mentioned that on another thread. So to these people they can’t entirely understand what all the hype or memories are with those old maps. Equally they have a hard time understanding the aggression thrown at staff and the new maps by people who resent the change. Coming in and looking at things like this with an unbiased perspective leads many to think this community is just very dramatic, divided, and stuck on old matters. It’s alienating to new players. To them the current maps are where their memories and fond associations are. So now we essentially have two “generations” of Feral Heart users now.

As with anything time causes changes, as people get older life changes for them and people come and go. A lot of the old users that played when the old maps were around have come and gone. There’s definitely a little handful of us left, but most have gone for varying reasons. Those that come back usually stick around for a short time just for reliving nostalgia and revisiting a childhood game experience. This is all simply because that’s how life works. People can’t stay in the same place forever.

The game isn’t losing its base simply because of the old maps. Without a doubt some users left or lost interest after the old maps were removed though, but that’s also because of how the old maps were removed. The removal of the old maps could have gone differently if things were handled differently by the Feral Heart administration of the time. For one, the community should have been informed of the issues the maps caused and the potential plans the staff had to fix these issues. Instead the old maps were suddenly changed and or removed from the game and replaced entirely. Users had the rug pulled up from under them and were understandably upset as they felt like their feelings and opinions were never considered for this “Community” patch. Without a doubt staff had the best intentions and implemented things in that patch to help the community, but it also caused more issues by how it was done. This is why the new maps, which aren’t inherently bad, were received negatively by some.

What should have been done, was to do things right from the start and NOT remove the old maps. The old maps should have simply been redesigned but still kept the old areas just with added content and detail. (Something similar to what later staff did with the “failed” No Mod October 2018 patch that Raz didn’t approve). The community should have also been kept in the loop. Imagine how much more fun it would have been if it was a joint project between staff & community? Live-streams with discussion as maps are made where ideas can be presented and implemented, updates and latest feed? -shrug-

Since I work/worked with the person involved in that 2016 patch that replaced the old maps it’s hard to talk about this honestly without coming off the wrong way. I’m not trying to sit here and say anyone did anything purposefully wrong. They went into it with their heart in the right place and did what they felt was right in the best way possible to them. In the end it’s apparent mistakes were made. Mistakes can happen in any instance though so it’s more about how you bounce back and less about the mistake itself.

Back to 2016 though:

The game wasn’t really in any better position in 2016 before the maps were removed. I was there, I know. In fact Flourite Plains was practically dead most of the time. Most of the maps were growing dead. And that began due to the removal of general chat as that disrupted how people communicated and advertised roleplays. The few people left started bunching up into small pockets like Stone Bridge thus leaving the rest of the map barren. It was a precursor to how it is with everyone bunching up in The Grounds along the hill. Had Feral Heart been left as was it would be in no better a place as it is now.

Feral Heart means a lot to most who have played it. But at the end of the day it wasn’t the maps themselves that made this game so special. It’s all about the experiences shared, the people met, and the moments had that make this place special. We often apply and associate the feelings and memories we value to a time or place to further cement their presence in our lives... because as ourselves and our lives change we try to hold on to anything that feels familiar and stable. I think that’s a big part of why so many, including myself, had such a hard time parting with the old maps. It’s another reason why so many old users blame the state of the game’s change and falling numbers on the removal of those old maps as well. But if we all look at things honestly that’s not even half the story... So as bitter sweet as it sounds maybe it’s not really that Feral Heart has changed as much as we all have?

Going forward:

Feral Heart as well as its players will continue to change as time goes on. It’s never going to stay the same, just as we ourselves will not. That’s just part of the experience though. As with anything in life folks will have to accept this. You don’t have to like or agree with the changes made to still care about the game. One should consider though if it’s worth perpetually being upset about what was rather than accepting what is and will be. Is it possible folks who are stuck on “old Feral Heart” who stir up heated debates are spoiling the experience for the new Feral Heart generation? Sure we may not ever get back the feeling of “old Feral Heart” but what if what is to come is better if not good enough? Why are different and new things often automatically judged on a scale of what was there before? This kind of mentality is very limiting and closes off the possibility of growing to love something new. I’m sure anyone who has entered a new relationship after a break up, moved to a new home, new school/job can understand. You’ll never see the potential of something if you automatically blind yourself with nostalgia. It’s sort of like grieving and never moving on.

Before we all came to know and love Feral Heart it was once an entirely new experience. The horizons seemed limitless to what could come or be as the game updated. If the game no longer gives you that feeling though it may be best to simply give it a break and wait out for an update or two. If after the break(s) you still find yourself not satisfied anymore then chances are you’ve out grown it. It might be hard for some to accept but it’s always best to consider moving on to a place that makes you happier. <3

One thing that will never change at least is that Feral Heart will always be here, and it’s memories either new or old will last forever.

News Archives / FH Official Newsletter: Spring 2020

A review of things that have happened during this season thus far & some new things to come:
2020 has rolled in! With spring well underway the time has come to refresh ourselves on some of the things that have gone on and maybe find out about some of the new plans and events in the works. We hope you've all been staying safe and healthy. During these unprecedented times we're grateful to have a place like Feral Heart where we can all find some peace and unity even while social distancing & staying home.

Board & Site Changes
Some of the notable additions and changes:

The past months have been rather uneventful in terms of any largely noticeable site or board changes but there have been some slight changes to note.

- The mod in training name colors were changed from orange to yellow to better distinguish them from the similarly colored moderator colors.

- Razmirz has gone through the process of removing Joomla which brings us one step closer to the updated site.

- Expect to soon see some new Feral Heart themed forum rank names. Thanks to community suggestions on our Tumblr, Instagram, and anonymous polls we’ve got a fun little list.  8)

- After many long sleepless nights, immense hardships, ugly weeping, and bloodshed the random forum dots are no more. We know you guys are probably really upset about this decision though so we have made plans to include all the dots on the upcoming overhauled forum design. Just be patient, we know exactly what you want and will give it to you in a couple more years.

Events & Community Highlights

Rolling in with the new year and spring season comes an all new one time contest, the Official Feral Heart Podium Contest. Tired of that blinding base white character creator screen? Wouldn’t you like to see something fresh, swanky, and new without just having to mod your game every time? Well now is your chance to have a shot at creating a podium that might just become the game’s official podium aka character select screen. If you’d like to participate we’re accepting submissions until June 1st HERE

On February 15th the Feral Heart staff along with the Winter MOTS held a live streamed podcast. During the podcast we had a Q & A session where we answered various questions submitted from the community as well as engaged in discussions about the game and other fun topics. There was also some fun casual chitchat and activities like doodling. Thank you to all those who tuned in and participated! If you’d like to see a recording of the stream you can listen in on part of the recording over on our Official YoutubeHERE

Feral Heart user & 2020 Spring MOTS winner SpicyDirt & Faewyn arranged a lovely little community event in February where they invited users to just get together and have fun in celebration of the Valentine’s season of love. A movie was streamed, various little mini games were played and overall everyone had a fantastic time socializing and getting out of The Grounds and spending time in Eastern Pass. Huge thank you to SpicyDirt, Faewyn, and others for planning out and putting this together. It’s these types of positive interactions within the community that we cherish and love to promote. Spread the love!

As a nice way to look back upon all the enjoyable years of Feral Heart, staff along with the Winter MOTS came up with the idea of Feral Flashback! Earlier this year the community got together to collectively share some of their most memorable screenshots from Feral Heart. Together we celebrated Feral Heart’s entrance into the year 2020 by looking back fondly on times that defined our experience with the game. We look forward to many more great memories in the years ahead! You can look through the screenshots submitted HERE

Staff Changes

Developer Departures: xSpirit, Cattails, marsbone, Thimble, Aureilius, BlueMuzzleFlash, Leda, Auccultist, astralskye, sobieski, & BluuLeopard.

We’d like to take a moment to wish these devs farewell and thank them for their work and efforts with Feral Heart. Due to creative differences and conflicts with Raz’s schedule and overall visions for Feral Heart this development team has decided to depart some months back. Our staff and community alike had an immensely enjoyable experience getting to know them. Each brought on their own special flare and creative touch to the project. They’re a very talented group and we hope that they continue to pursue positive work with projects that better fit their interests.

Development and Improvement
Bringing the community together to build a better game:

Due to our previous developer team leaving to work on their own projects Razmirz has begun the process of putting together a new development team to pick up where the others left off. This team will be devoted to continuing work here for the foreseeable future. While details of this new developer team can’t be announced publicly yet due to things still being discussed and settled, expect to see updates in the upcoming months. Also keep in mind that any WIP projects done by the previous developer team will not be used here as they have taken along that work with them. (This includes content teased in the last News Letter). Any projects and content going forward will be the work of the new developer team.

- We’re still open and looking for content creators for the game! Have skills in map making, modeling, creating textures, producing markings, animating, composing music & or sound effects? Want a chance to work directly with the staff to have your very own work included into the game? Now's the time to raise your paw! Maybe you have what we’re looking for to become a developer for the game! Click here

- Our anonymous feedback polls are still up and running! We encourage everyone to participate! We really appreciate your opinions and ideas. Click here to view

News Archives / Covid19: Some Words of Encourgement...

Dear Feral Heart users,

For many years Feral Heart has stood out as a place where the community creates and enhances the experience that is the game. In fact it is testament to the users’ incredible faith and loyalty that a game that hadn’t had a recent source update until 2019 has survived to see its self into today. Through out those years together you withstood the trials of time, from the creator resigning, lack of source code content updates, the removal of general chat, the world overhaul, the hacking, disputes & disagreements, etc...

You all are no strangers to change, uncertainty, and or hardships, because at the end of it all it was this sense of community that kept us together.

And so... now more than ever is a time to come together, in a unity of understanding and support, because this time the trial is a bit bigger and isn’t just a game.

As most of you are aware the recent days have been challenging. As our world prepares to cope with a growing crisis many of us find ourselves coming to terms with an increasing sense of uncertainty. For some that uncertainty creates fear. It is important to note that while things may seem foreboding, that under no circumstance should we let fear or sadness overcome us, nor should it isolate us.

In fact, now is a time for us to all share in the weight of this burden. A time to extend a hand to those in need of assistance, and an arm over those in need of comfort.

As the world braces for the many possibilities of changes and hardships ahead it is that same old Feral Heart resilience that we ask you all to find and share from within yourselves. Though an unlikely place, it is within a roleplay game filled with wolves and lions that we are offered an encouraging reminder: Which is that we can be more than what we perceive ourselves to be. Right now many of us may feel helpless, afraid, and sad, but it is through our worst moments that we grow, refine, and discover the best in ourselves.

Together we’ll get through this too.

There is no limit to the amount of questions you may ask, but keep in mind that we may not answer every single one. We’re going to try to make sure that everyone gets a chance to have at least one of their questions answered.

While we encourage you all to be honest, we kindly ask that you be respectful with the questions you ask. You may ask questions to address concerns but we expect that you keep it civil, constructive, and mature.

You can ask about anything pretty much, but do keep in mind that the main focus point of the podcast will be on Feral Heart related topics.
