Game Discussion / Paradox's Somewhat Complete Guide to Originality
« on: June 21, 2011, 11:59:45 pm »
This is a sister topic to the cliche list

So, maybe you just recently found out that "whoa nelly, my character is cliche!"  Or, perhaps you're making your character, but you want them to be as original as possible.  Either way, this guide will (hopefully) help you to make a nice, well-rounded, original character that doesn't make people say "been there, done that."

How does one define originality?
When someone says a character is "original", they usually mean that the character unique- the opposite of cliche.  In other words, the character's personality, history, or even appearance isn't what they commonly see in FH.  For instance, a black wolf with with red eyes and scar markings?  Not original, because they're everywhere.  I can guarantee that anyone who frequents FH in-game has seen at least one of these kinds of wolves/lions.

Step One - The Name
Usually, it's not even necessary to look at the cliche list to know what names are overused.  Scar, Dark, Moonlight, Soul, they're seen all over the place.  So, what do you do?  Find a baby names website and see if you like anything.  Not looking for a human name?  Then try out random sounds and see if they make a name, or look up a fantasy name generator.  If you're dead set on using a real word (!WARNING! BE CAUTIOUS OF USING JAPANESE WORDS), then see what it is in a different language.  Or, just try to find something uncommon.  Look up music and literary terms- sometimes they can make for really interesting names!

Step Two - The Appearance
So, you've got your name.  Fantabulous.  But wait, now you need an appearance to go with that.  My advice here is to just be as creative as you can.  Play around with different colors and designs; you'd be amazed at what you can come up with!  Try out some of those markings you don't see people using a lot, too.  Some of them can look really cool with the right color scheme.  Also, try some of the more unpopular colors; I'm not talkin' the ugly ones, just the overlooked ones.  Beige comes to mind, though there are plenty of others.  Also, thanks to Draak for pointing this out: just because your character is evil/dark does NOT mean they have to have dark colors!  The same goes for good/angelic character being light colors.  Also, if you claim your character is albino, they will NOT have blue, green, brown, etc. eyes.  Only red/pink.

Step Three - The Personality
Now that your character has a name and an appearance, it's time to make their personality.  This tends to be the one that's hardest to make original, but I have faith in this guide you to avoid those cliches!  First, you might want to try making a little list, written or mental.  On one side, have positive traits, and negative on the other.  Try to make it balanced, and pick traits that relate to one another.  For instance, don't have "shy" and "makes friends easily."  Most shy people kind of freeze up when they have to talk to new people (or is that just me?  That can't just be me).  You'll want to avoid the following "character types."
Type A. - The one who avoids everyone, is cold-hearted/a sociopath, and has absolutely no dimension other than that.  Really, that kind of character is just a rock.  A boring, flat rock.
Type B. - The one who acts like such a "tortured soul."  I.e. sighing all the time, insisting other can't understand them, "hiding their inner pain", and generally just taking the entire rp to baw and mope around.  May or may not instantly get all cuddly with the most "attractive" character of the opposite gender.
Type C. - The one who is rash, and does everything without thinking, but then suffers no consequences for said actions.  I.e. a wolf running into a hunter's camp because they shot his packmate, then escaping unscathed, and for some reason no one follows him.  A little rashness is okay, but for the love of God, don't overdo it like that.
More types can be found at the cliche list, link at the top of this page.

Step Four - The History
Finally, it comes down to this: your character's history.  This step is where most people completely botch it.  They may have the original name, the appearance, and a decent personality, but then their history is a complete cliche-fest.  Now, if your character...
A. Was cast out for being different
B. Had their entire pack slaughtered by an ambiguous creature/figure, and somehow they survived it
C. Raised themselves since birth
D. Is a reincarnation, and has some sort of super-mystical power that makes them the best thing since sliced bread
JUST STOP RIGHT THERE.
First of all "C" isn't possible.  I don't get how these wolves/lions are somehow raising themselves and not getting eaten.  As for the rest, they're just way too overdone, and quite cliche.  Anyway, there is nothing wrong with a little suffering in a character's history, but don't make it the only point of everything!  Everyone has good and bad in their pasts, and honestly?  What's wrong with having a character who grew up normally?  Even they have their share of suffering.  How to fix this cliche?  Just...be original.  Don't kill off everyone related to your character, don't make them into a martyr, don't try to act like they're better than everyone else.  Let their parents be alive, and actually nice to them.  Let them be a little more normal.  Not everyone has a traumatic, life-changing even happen in their history.

So, this is really all I can think of for now.  Will probably add in some edits later as more ideas come to be, but for now, this is it.  Hope it helps somewhat.

As the title implies, this is where my character biographies shall be going~  This first post will probably be more of a directory than anything, as well as some information about myself in case you feel like you want to rp with any of my available characters.  Also, I often think of my characters as anthropomorphic and in more human-like settings.  Hopefully that helps with understanding some of the more unrealistic hybrids/human-like histories.

What are...
The Skyggen?

No one is entirely sure where the Skyggen originated.  Some say the first simply formed under the right conditions at the right time, while others believe they are actually ghosts, spirits remaining on this planet after their bodies have long since died.  However, the Skyggen are neither of these things.  They are actually a product of black magic, the first having been created during the Dark Ages.  A Norwegian shaman, perhaps seeking revenge, summoned up a spirit of darkness.  Or at least, he tried to do so.  What appeared was something he had never seen or read about.  The creature that levitated before him, he later learned, was a spirit of chaos itself.  Not knowing this, however, the shaman called the creature "Skyggen" for its shadowy appearance.
Over the years, the Skyggen have gone by many names.  However, they all had one thing in common: anarchy.  Chaos.  Destruction.  The absence of order.  They seem to bring it wherever they go, always accompanied by haunting laughter and crazed smiles.  In reality, the Skyggen feed off of chaos as a plant feeds off of sunlight.  Without it, they will become weak and die.  The best way to kill a Skyggen would be to lock it alone in an empty room, as there is nothing to disrupt.
It's hard to say what exactly one of these beings looks like, because they are capable of shifting forms.  However, they will always be a shade of some kind, but never pure white.  As animals, any markings a Skyggen will have do not stand out all that much, despite what color they may be.  What truly defines one of these beings, though, would be the tail tip; it will always be a bright, vivid color that leaves a trailing afterimage, similar to a candle.
Social by nature, the Skyggen will often band together to form groups and cause disorder wherever they go.  Some consider them evil for this, but they honestly can't help themselves.  Chaos is in their blood.  Exterminating them is possible, but a difficult task.  Skyggen are not immune to wounds or disease, but they are quite durable.  Outside of causing general mayhem, one can observe these strange creatures acting as any other would, the only exception being that they are much more fond of trickery that other beings.

. E x S i L i u M .
We are the outcasts.  The rebels, those who were cast out for violating some ridiculous law.  We live by our own rules, our own justice.  We are the banished.  We are the exiled.

. Backstory .
It's a well-known fact that the world can be a harsh place.  It seems even harsher when the guilty don't get what they deserve.  And thus begins the tale of Exsilium's founding.  The creator of Exsilium, now deceased, believed in following one's own morals before all else.  Such a value conflicted with his pride's laws.  Long story short, he was cast out from the pride and forced to become a loner.  Instead of taking this lying down, he decided to form a pride for others like him.  As time passed, it was agreed that canines should be allowed entrance also, as we are all the same at our core.  As such, Exsilium was no longer a pride, nor a pack, but referred to as simply a faction.  Years have passed since that time, and Exsilium still lives and thrives.
But there is one striking difference, among many.
Besides obvious changes, such as leadership and members, the faction's goal has changed.  Back then, the outcasts within Exsilium simply survived, nomads by nature.  Recently, however, there has been a plague emerging.  No matter where the faction goes, the virus follows.
It's hard to detect at first, this virus.  The first symptoms are barely noticeable: slight dizziness, fatigue, perhaps an aching head.  What's more, they don't persist for very long.  The fatigue and dizziness can be completely gone with a quick nap, the headache fading with time.  Then the symptoms worsen.  Weight loss is common, as well as coughing up blood.  And then the madness.  Without fail, the virus will cause its victim to gradually lose their sanity.
But there is hope.
According to Exsilium's current leader, there is a place out there, a safe haven where the plague has and will never touch.  As of now, no members of the faction are infected, partially due to their nomadic tendencies.  And so they search.  Looking for this alleged paradise, somewhere safe from the nightmarish world they are living in.
But it will be a long journey.

. Rules .
1. No godmoding, powerplaying, Mary-Sues, Gary-Stus, all that good stuff.
2. Wait to be accepted before posting further.
3. Keep things PG-13.
4. Censor strong curse words.
5. Have accurate grammar and spelling; an occasional typo is fine.  No one-liners.
6. Absolutely no wolfspeak.  Is there a such thing as lionspeak?  Uh, none of that, either?
7. Be active or be booted; you will be sent a warning if inactive for a long period of time, and no response within twenty four hours will result in your character being killed off.
8. Put something about scones in your form.  You know, so I know you've read the rules.
9. Use some form of brackets for OOC.
10. Don't kill someone else's character without their permission.
11. Please, no pets or familiars here.
12. Odd colors and markings are okay, but no angels, demons, supernatural creatures, hybrids, you get the idea.  No powers right now, either.
13. Any questions should be PMed to either Paradox (me) or Luceria.
14. Have fun with it!  We want conflicts and drama, here ;D

. Events/Updates .
The rp has officially started, and can be located here.  In-game rp will probably start once our map dilemma is sorted out.  As of now, we're still accepting applications, but only male characters!

Introduction / Hello
« on: January 09, 2011, 07:34:15 pm »
Hi everyone, I'm new around here, in case that wasn't very obvious ^^;;  Always been bad at introductions, but here goes nothing...You can call me Paradox, or any variation of that, just as long as I know you're referring to me  :P  I was never part of IT, so this whole game is a new thing for me.  Let's see, what else...Well, I'm a girl, and a furry (side-striped jackal).  I like writing, drawing, rping, reading, playing video games, that sort of thing.
That's really all I can think of for now o_O;;
So...yeah.  Hi 83

Oh, right.  I was messing around with presets, and I think I'm starting to get the hang of that, but how do you alter the mane shapes/facial expressions?  I've seen some stuff like that on DeviantArt, and I just can't really figure it out.
