Your tutorials are very helpful. I can finally make my own maps x3

but, do you know how to make the ground texture vary? like, instead of having everything green grass, you can have some dirt spots here and there? Sorry if this sounds like a noobish question, but I really can't for the life of me figure it out xD

Glad they help and you are making maps now. :3

As for different terrain textures, you have to make a Terrain mask. I just put up the photoshop tut for that, GIMP coming soon. :3

i am making my first map, and i am making it really really really REALLY big. i know, bad idea for a first map... but anyway, how do you make it really pokey, like in reds new map, he/she(what? i dont know!) has these little pokes of dirt everywhere, how do you do that? and how do you make a really big map? i heard that all you do is make your terrain really small, but im afraid that everything will just be really small and i will stay normal size!!

sure im in love, but at least im in love. <3

Terrain mask in GIMP is up! :)

First off, it's ok, my first map in IT was  really big too, 26,000. Not big in FH standards, since now we have it so much easier with placing the objects. But back in IT, that was good sized map.
It can be a little daunting at first when you see that big area but, once you learn how things work, you'll be whipping those maps out. XD

For your first question.
Do you mean like little bumps in the ground of dirt? I'm not sure which map you are referring to. x3

If so, you would need to use your Heightmap and draw them. Start with a brush that has some kind of scatter pattern, or if you have a lot of patience, you can do each little dot. Make the brush size small. Choose a gray color one or 2 shades lighter then your base shade. Paint the area you want to have the bumps. Mess with brushes, the shades of color as well as your map height in-game until you are happy.

I hope that's what you meant.

For the second question.
Ok let me see if I can explain this clear as possible, as I can be confusing. x3

First off the bigger size(how wide you make it) you make you map in-game the wider the terrain features will be. The higher you make your map, the higher your hills will be and deeper your holes will be. So as your map grows, so does the terrain. Does that make sense? When you make your map bigger(wider) it stretches the terrain. To give more height to your hills and depth to your holes, you have to raise your map's height.

I'll post some pictures later if you like. :3

As far as when people say to make your terrain really small, first know, the heightmap picture will always be 513x513 that never changes.
And what they mean is, draw your terrain features smaller on your heightmap. Remember when you make your map bigger, your terrain will stretch. When you want to make smaller terrain features in your map, zoom in to the specific part of the heightmap you are working on. Pretend that the zoomed in part is your whole canvas. You will have to draw your terrain smaller, so once you zoom out, it will be tiny; but once in-game you make your map big, it will be normal sized. If you draw your heightmap and make the terrain big or even normal size, it can end up HUGE when you make your map bigger.

So for :
Small maps=Draw your terrain features bigger.
Big maps=Draw your terrain features smaller.

I hope that made sense. x3

Ahhh, I see. Thank you very much ^^
You're quite welcome. :3

Ah really? I've never used Paint.net. I guess no tuts for that then. ::)

You're welcome and Thanks Sly, it means a lot to hear that.<3 All the comments and rates on the videos from the users make me happy these are doing some good and actually helping people. That was the whole point of this. :3
Cause I remember being that noob without a clue how to start on such things as map making. x3

Long post is long... XD

Well you can have up to 6, unfortunately as of right now the 4th, 5th and 6th terrains have this weird glowing effect due to a coding error or something. But if you want more than 3 you would...
Make a 2nd terrain mask, using the same Red, Green, and Blue. If you would only want 4 terrains, you would only use the Red on the 2nd, for 5, Red and Green... and well you get the idea :P
You would then save it .png and in your map folder, just like the first terrain, mapnameMask2.

Then you go in-game, and under the world tab, you would type in your first terrain like normal under the terrain mask box. Then where it has the little arrows to switch which terrain you're on, you would go to 4, then in the box type in your 2nd terrain.

Again it doesn't show correctly as far as I know, and although I have seen where some have gotten it to work, I was never able to. But you could maybe search for terrain mask in the help section.

For you to be able to save the new file over it, you have to make sure and close your old file first.

Hopefully I will be able to get back on this soon since my comp can handle the video program and FH at the same time better now.
