I do have one question though:

In the reference, the left hindleg and tail have a darker shade of gray on them. Are they actually meant to be a dark gray or is that just how the artist shaded the drawing?

I'm pretty sure that's just shading.. Yeah, but if you want you can add the shadings and then show me? Just to see how it looks*

Yeah I included a mane. I always include a mane even if there's not one in the photo. And like you say, I just made is a slightly-darker version of his base gray. xD
