Art Gallery / Tearless's Stuffs
« on: August 22, 2012, 04:46:41 am »
Sadly lacking in good FH-related arts at the moment, but here, have a wolffox. I just really wanted to draw her... if I've missed out on some important detail, do let me know, and I'll fix it.

Just realized I did this one a while ago and never posted it.. one of my own characters, a Thai ridgeback/Cumberland sheepdog mix named Duke. I got kinda lazy with his fur around the edges...

Aaand have a Crinni as well. Because because.

A run cycle of Newt (I've got a version with a simple background, but for some reason photobucket murders it no matter what I try):

More stuff will likely be posted here in the future.

Game Suggestions & Ideas / Ability to Hide Online Status

At the risk of sounding antisocial, this is a feature I'd really love to see implemented at some point. Not exactly essential, I know, but every once in a while I come actoss moments where I'd really love to be able to go invisible, especially given that I'm not always a very chatty person and kind of like to be left alone to derp around the plains sometimes.

I'unno. It's a thought. Apologies if this idea's been posted, but I didn't see anything.

Game Help / Can't see my own markings on other people...
« on: June 19, 2012, 05:47:08 am »
The title explains the essence of my problem. I made a large marking pack recently and put it up on the forums, which is all well and good, but whenever I see someone who (according to them) is using my markings, they appear blank white. I find this rather odd.

Strangely, I do see them on people, but only if they're actually using other markings that I don't have. I noticed this even before I uploaded the pack.

Any ideas?

Tearless's Corner O' Cartography

Well, not really cartography. You know what I mean. I had an old thread of maps... but I lost it, so I thought I'd just make a new one since the old was all messy, outdated, and disorganized anyway. I should mention up front that the way I go about public maps is a little weird. Most of them are what I term 'Perpetual RP maps,' which means while you're on the map, you are in character, and you can assume everyone else is, too. That's because I always hear people complaining about not being able to do this on the regular maps, and agree with them. It also eliminates those awkward 'Oh, I thought they were RPing so I answered in character but they weren't...' moments. Not all of them will be like this (there are some I haven't finished that will be for doing whatever you want), but it's a sort of experiment that I never got to try because school started and I ran out of time for map-making.

All the maps I post here will be available (if not now, at some point) for public download, but they will have some rules attatched and, at the risk of seeming persnickety, I'd really appreciate it if you respect them.

Rules Applying to All Maps:

Follow the FeralHeart rules. (they're in the forum, plain as day)

Be nice to each other.

I hate to discriminate, but please, unless I specify otherwise for certain maps, keep non-OC characters (ie. Naruto, Okami, Toboe, Simba, etc.) off of these maps.

For the love of all that is good, DO NOT USE CHATSPEAK ON THESE MAPS. Do what you want in Fluorite, or on your own maps, but on maps I have created, no. Just no. I really, really don't like chatspeak and there are plenty of other maps on which you may speak however you wish.

Cool, done with that. Now, on to ze maps!

Gallifrey

For anyone who watched Doctor Who and felt sad that they couldn't go romping through the fields of red grass (or maybe it's just me) I have provided you with just such an opportunity: one small corner of the Shining World of the Seventh System, brought to the Milky Way galaxy for you!

It's not a very big or complex map, just a nice little red field with a river, and some shiny structures.

Map Rules:

- This is one of those maps onto which you can bring your non-OC characters, but ONLY if you can be civil and not get into a fight if someone else is also RPing the Doctor. Heck, this shouldn't even be a problem in this case. Just play the 'it's a paradox, hi other me!' card and get along. What else is time travel for?

- Gallifrey is NOT a perpetual RP map, but obviously you can RP on it if you want.

To preemtively answer the questions I know will arise:

I notice you're using game meshes. Will this mess up my default files?
No, it won't. I made a separate object group for the stuff.

What the... is the texture on the shiny stuff supposed to be doing that?
Yes. Yes it is.

More maps to come! I've got a very shiny cave in the works (shiny in the literal sense and the Firefly-slang sense!)

Game Suggestions & Ideas / Several Unrelated Irritants
« on: April 28, 2012, 07:35:22 pm »
Not huge issues, really, but they bug the heck out of me.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed this since a good 75% of all the wolves you meet are black or partially black: they look like a dark void. There's no texture, the lighting doesn't seem to affect them, and the result is basically a bunch of silouhettes running around, which is all well and good for demons or darkness elementals or what have you, but just looks weird in realistic RPs. The problem probably wouldn't be that hard to fix, either, given that it doesn't exist for the manes.

Secondly, canine ears. Specifically in certain emotes. See, this is what an angry wolf looks like:

This, on the other hand, is what an angry wolf looks like in FeralHeart (yes, he's a dog, shaddup, it's the same mesh):

I'm not even gonna start about that lower jaw.

Even at the best of times, the ears are a little funny-looking:

It almost looks like they were put on backwards after the meshes were made. I don't even know what happened with the emote. Nothing native to this galaxy has ears that do that. If you look at this (not angry) wolf, you'll notice that they curve inward, not outward, and they don't have the weird deep-dish thing going on that the mesh does.

He's not angry, just very disappointed.

I have a nagging suspicion that this could be made a lot better simply by switching the ears around and repositioning them a tiny bit. If anyone knows more about how these things work, let me know.

Finally, the third issue: the tails. They kind of look like they belong on a My Little Pony (I'm talking about the ones from the 80's here). I even googled 'wolves with fluffy tails' in order to find a picture of a real wolf with a tail anything like as grand as the ones we're currently sporting, and the only things it turned up were foxes, Halloween costumes I can't post without getting in trouble, and, for some reason, squirrels. This led me to two conclusions: First, I'm concerned that the internet thinks wolves are small tree-climbing rodents. Second, there is no wolf alive with a tail that big and fluffy. Again, it's great if your character is a fox or a sparkledog (or a squirrel), but what about those of us who are actually fond of realism? Granted, there are a lot of other things I could nitpick about on our fluffy sparklemesh, but the tails and ears are the big ones to me. Just putting in one more slider to alter the size would help a lot.

Shown above: A vicious, snarling wolf. The Internet wouldn't lie.

Now, I can't say, since mesh-making is not my area of expertise, how difficult it would be to change these last two. For all I know the ears move like that because that's the only way they could do it without the ears floating away from the head or something. I also don't know whether this bothers anyone else; maybe other people like the way it looks and I'm being a Realism Nazi. If I am, do feel free to tell me so.

Forum Suggestions & Ideas / An 'Unsubscribe From Thread' Button?
« on: March 31, 2012, 04:20:57 am »
This could well be just me, but I occasionally post on threads that later get spammed with arguments or just get a lot of activity that I no longer need to know about. Whenever this happens it clogs up my New Replies box and gets a bit annoying, particularly for things like game threads. It seems like an option to stop getting replies from specific threads would be rather useful.

Game Suggestions & Ideas / Character Creator Idea: Realism Switch
« on: February 05, 2012, 05:07:36 pm »
Considering how well things like Sully's wolf mod went over, I got the idea to actually put it in the game and toggle between it and the more Disney-ish skin.  Same with  lions, you could toggle between Lion King style and something along these lines:

I'm not sure how hard this would be to include, of course, and I realize it's easy to download stuff from the forum, but this would add more variety on the plains and enable people who want to look more cartoonish to appear that way even if someone else is using a more realistic skin.
