I cannot be the only one to notice this.
So, imagine you have created an amazing map, for a soon-to-be amazing group, with an amazing plot, with amazingly simple standards- Realistic, and can download maps. so you expect to be the next big thing, the largest group ever- because, why not? Your dedicated, put effort, and people have shown interest. So, you run your happy little way to Stone Bridge and start making some movies. After only one or two clips, you get a whisper! They quickly give you a fine RP sample, and you excitedly accept, and ask them to come meet you at Stone Bridge. They whisper back that they are already there and sitting right behind you. Feeling foolish, you turn around to see..... a ridiculously skinny 0,0,0 black wolf with bright cyan blue eyes.
This has happened to me many times, and I'm sick of it. 0,0,0 removes the texture and is unrealistic. Blue eyes are extremely rare in wolves. Now, we have all had our share of these Shadow-Wolves as I call them, but what about other supposedly "realistic" wolves? I have meet solid chocolate brown ones (Your not a lab, your a WOLF), bright ginger/red ones, and ones with odd markings. So, what does "Realism" even mean anymore? You already throw away a lot of realism with the now-common ranks and speaking wolves. At this point, I'm starting to think "realism" just means natural-ish colors, which isn't realistic.
I feel like no one ever has even seen a picture of a wolf. Wolves have lots of fur, they shouldn't be on minimum wait unless they have an illness or something! And simple things like the facial proportions DO matter! I see way to many wolves with default sizes!
I do realize this focus/ was all about wolves, mainly because I never roleplay as felines and have no idea about how good there realism is.
-
Even without reading your post, I can honestly say I have NO idea.
People take realistic so many ways.
(Warrior Cats)
Realistic colors, as in you must look like a real cat.
You must also act slightly realistic, AKA: No power playing, no powers, ECT.
(Lions)
Lions can be anything really. XD
I was in one where EVERYTHING was NOTE PERFECT real life, minus the fact we talked.
(Wolves)
You aren't neon and no powers/wings.
That's about it.
Now, after READING your post, I can say this:
People.
Suck.
Most people see 'realistic' and go "OK! RANDOM WOLF AND WE'LL BE GOOD!"
And you taught me something. XD I never knew blue eyed wolves were rare.
They shall all have yellow or green eyes from now on... -Ahem-
Anyways, the problem with realistic is that loads of people don't get HOW realistic.
As I made my mini-list above, that's the cliche 'realistic' standards.
You step out of that, and people don't understand.
So, in other words, you have to state the realism.
Or what's above shall be what you get. x3x
But, the over-all question, I have no freaking idea.
-
I'm pretty sure a blue eyed wolf is nonexistant, unless it's a puppy, but a puppy's eyes change over time. " If you see a wolf with blue eyes then he or she is likely a wolf-hybrid and not a full-blooded wolf."
Anyway, realism. I suppose, by most Feral-Heart standards, realism is any color eyes except red, purple, and pink, any markings, as long as they're realistically colored, and any mane of any color. What really gets me, on realism, though, is the backstories. Stories and personality are part of realism too. I hate the unrealistic "was lab tested on" in roleplays that claim to be realistic. I've had my share of lab tested characters and I still have one, but do you really think an animal would be able to escape from a top-security lab with hundreds of scientists? The only reason mine did was because another one was too strong and too violent; they had made him that way on accident. He rampaged and she bought the time to escape. Another backstory that gets me is the "her friend died in a fire," "her parents drowned," etc.. This is because don't you think the pup would have really huge fears of fire or water because her parents were killed? Not to mention the trauma they go through when they see fire/water. People just don't think things clearly through.
-
@Ocenwave Yup, that pretty much sums it up.
@Birdi I believe there was one captive breed blue-eyed wolf. And I do see your point with the backstories, I just don't bother with them as much.
-
Yes I completely agree. This is the main reason i stopped rping and making packs. You tell people to be realistic and come to you with a black wolf with white markings and blue eyes named Sabrina. And i\I'm all like "..wut." And this happens when you decide to join a pack and they say that they are realistic. You show up with your realistic wolf and they have purple markings and green hair... what?
-
People get snitchy when I tell them that their character is unrealistic and they either have to change or they don't get accepted
Into the role play. I mean, really people. Go look up a picture of a wolf and tell me that your character
is realistic. Back stories bother me deeply, too, however, to as much as appearance.
The role play itself shouldn't be realistic because that would be boring. Semi-realistic is most interesting, because
it's natural, but it isn't "run of the mill."
The "wolves" running around with manes is just a no-no in my opinion. If a wolf has a mane, it's not a wolf. XD
I think canines look cool with the manes, but to say you're realistic with one is just.. Ehh.
Presets are the best option for a realistic characters. You an use more than three colors. :P

Well, my definition of wolf realism is no neon colors, wings, or crazy markings. Strictly realistic however would be exactly life-like. So, I am not sure about your 'shadow wolves.'
There are wolves with blue eyes though.

It's not pitch black though.
Then again, Realism could be perceived as non-neon. Which, is in my opinion acceptable. Now if you're looking for an extremely life-like roleplay with absolutely nothing outside of the common wolf category, then I would suggest saying it's 'strictly realistic' and to ask for your approval.
-
Well, recently I was skimming curiously on movies and I saw one that said about a WC clan, I skimmed the cat and it was unrealistic, and then the movie description said "realistic"
It was at a 0, 0, 0, but thats all I remember.
-
I agree. I never say `Realistic` I just say `no neon or wings`. But, honestly, realistic is no longer life like. I had a warrior cats rp and I said realistic. I got someone wanting to join and I was like, great. Turned out the cat who wanted to join was ginger with blue eyes and a lions mane. Seroiusly? Ginger ats only have blue eyes and kittens, yet this cat was called Seaeyes. This is quite apart from the fact the Warriors do not know what the sae is!

Real realism is hard to come by and honestly I suck at making realistic wolves so normally I get presets as wolves range from a variety of different colors and there are barley any markings that are just shades of different colors instead of a bunch of stripes or spots. I mean a "black" wolf can have silver, gray, dark gray, black and white all in their fur but still be considered black as that is the main color not the shadings.
As for the blue eyes, there has been only one wolf who has kept his blue eyes all throughout life and he was in captivity~ Other than that one wolf, the only other "wolves" with blue eyes all through their life would be wolf hybrids (meaning they are breed with dogs). Sorry I do way to much research on wolves o3o
To people who don't research or look at pictures of a specific animal, they think realistic isn't giant or tiny, realistic "colors" and markings that could be formed in nature (but often times not for that species).
In my opinion to make things more realistic, make a preset or have a very experienced preset maker make one for you as it can have as many shades of colors as your heart requires. Or you can get someone to make a marking pack of just shadings.
Have you ever seen the Mass Marking called Timber Wolf?
If you have, we should have someone make a marking pack that has only the markings look like similar to that! That way more people can make real realistic wolves :3
"Realistic" wolves I often seen are dark in colors and have strange awkward markings o3o and normally have blue eyes. Basically, not all wolves are dark colors T-T, the markings should be shades or just no markings at all. And yellow, brown, green or amber eyes.
Sorry if I rambled on a bit, but there is my opinion~
"A wolf's eyes may be brown, orange, yellow or pale green. They are NEVER blue - that is a common error in drawings and toys. Very young wolf cubs have grey-blue eyes, but they are not the bright blue of some Huskies (Huskies are sometimes used to play wolves in films, which may have led to the myth of blue-eyed wolves), and they change color as the cub ages." - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100209090003AAaJGtf (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100209090003AAaJGtf)
"When wolf pups are about ten days of age, their eyes first open. Their eyes are a deep murky blue, but by about three weeks of age the pups eyes have turned a bright blue. Around six to eight weeks of age the pups eyes will turn green and finally will reach their adult color which can be anything from pale yellow, to amber or even orange or brown. The orange of this wolves eyes is common." - http://www.all-about-wolves.com/what_wolves_look_like.aspx (http://www.all-about-wolves.com/what_wolves_look_like.aspx)

Yup. It's quite annoying.

Im iffy with names, I normally let them pass because I'm a big fan of them myself. And the backmane can go either way, realistically adding fluff or unrealistically giving it a back Mohawk.

Well, thats the thing it's not realistic- keep in mind realistic means life like. Also, Im 90% sure that is a photo edit, considering you can see the iris lines, which I would think you would considering how clear the photo is. Even if its not edited, it's a hybrid.

I agree with alot of what you said there.

Its what they call Reality/Normality
*Ahem* To tell you the Truth, its become so warped I haven't the Foggiest idea anymore.
-
Well, I merely stated my opinion on realism. However if you called your roleplay strictly-realistic, I think you'd have a better time. That, in my opinion, is exactly life-like. Semi-realistic, your wolf would be acceptable. And non-realistic is the neons.. now, this is my opinion. It's not wrong, or right. It's just there.

Aww, thank you. c;

In my opinion, no roleplay is truly "realistic" unless the rp is in a map of it's own based on the real environment in which the creatures lived in. They characters must have the correct colours and corresponding sizes, and they must behave like the real animal. Most importantly, they must NOT talk!!! Communicate via noises or body language. Animals don't talk!
I don't mind it when people say "realistic colours", or when... say for example, prides... when they have mating seasons, only one male, chase young males etc etc.
Again, no rp is realistic. Where in the world do wild cats lose kittens to hyenas?!
-
Where do feral cats loose kittens to hyenas you ask? In my basement. That's where.

This does seem to be the standards people are going by now...

Exactly my point. Not saying I fully agree with these standards, yet, that's just how things are.

I thought it was Africa ._.

One time I joined a lion pride. Realistic colors, realistic map, no talking, mating season (I quit this RP for a reason) , one male, ... etc. So some roleplays out there are very realistic.
-
I have trouble with the whole realism thing due to:
o Most of us talk. (Yes, yes I know of the hyper-realistic roleplays - so awesome.)
o We all have NAMES. (Apart from ones called 'Wolf' that I see occasionally)
o It is hard to find the right markings to make oneself realistic and not boring.
o The pack we are is NAMED.
o We usually have RANKS like 'hunter' and 'fighter'. The wolves in irl packs do these things yes, but are not SPECIFICALLY ordered to do so.
If we went by actual realism, every. single. pack. should be semi-realistic. (Hyper-realistic <3 I didn't mean you.)
The boundaries between each category are hard to distinguish, I'm afraid.
-

Have you ever heard of the African wildcat? Or the African sand cat?
The African wildcats are the ancestors of the domestic cats we have today. Domesticated by the Egyptians, and bred down through the centuries. The sand cats might have been domesticated too at one point, but I'm not too sure. There are plenty of these "feral cats" living out in the savanahs of Africa, and I'm sure hyneas have taken their kittens away if given the chance.
Anywho, like others have said before me, it's very rare to find realistic roleplays or characters. I've only seen a roleplay with realistic-looking wolves ONCE out in Flourite Plains.... and they were a mapless group too. These wolves had realistic fur colors, realistic markings (german shepherd, or husky markings), realistic eye colors, and no manes. The only thing that wouldn't make them realistic is that the characters could talk. But other than that, I didn't see not one pitch black wolf, or neon colored wolf amoung them.
I consider a realistic animal character to have the following...
1.) Realistic fur colors; grey, brown, tan, fawn, reddish brown, white, black (but not 0,0,0 black),
2.) Realistic eye colors; gold, brown, and sometimes blue (especially for cats)
3.) Realistic markings for the particular animal. No stripes or spots for wolves.
I also don't really mind the manes on a wolf character. As long as they aren't a crazy neon color and they actually match the character's pelt color, I'm fine with it.
I would consider all my characters to be semi-realistic. They have realistic fur colors and markings for whatever species they are supposed to be, but they have manes and somewhat unrealistic eye colors.
