Title: Naming your Characters
Post by: Jackkdaw on March 03, 2014, 03:26:00 am
Been wonderin' this for some time now.

How do you guys come up with names for your characters?

Do you make up names?
Get them from somewhere- book/tv/song/etc. ?
Foreign languages?

Please, enlighten me.

ouo

I know for me, personally, most of my names are interesting names I've found in the Bible. (Such as Manasa, Manoah, Ashera, Molek, etc.)
Or something based off an interest of mine- like my fursona, Jackdaw is named after the ship from Assassin's Creed 4.

So,
How 'bout y'all?

Me..I just make them up. (Like: Kavern, Arakia, Adro, Knux, Zireal, etc.) I've lately noticed most of my character's names end with i's. (Ryevi, Joki..I can't think of them right now 3x) Sometimes, I'll take them from the Bible, but it's rare since me gusta making them up.

But sometimes, I wonder if the names are an offence or a bad thing in a different language. .o.

Ellemane
Well, my religion is Pagan. (Don't start a fight with me ya guys please >-<) and my family are wiccans as well as me. My wiccan name is Bellia (Beautiful) Klia (Fortune) Ellemanae (Element). I'm an extremely spiritual person so I chose my char's name to be Ellemanae.
Das my storeh.

I practically wing it most of the time and make up my character's names (such as Vespian, Rauven, Valkiin, etc). However, I always have a base that'll help me come up with the new name via switchin' the words around or addin' a letter or two.

Caspian = Vespian
Raven = Rauven
Falkiin (a username one of my acquaintances used to use) = Valkiin

Ehheh, I think ye' get the picture, aye? As for the middle/last names, I technically use a simple word that comes from another language.

Vespian Soule (Soul, French) Vahlok (Guardian; Dovahzul)
Rauven Vale (Hollow; French) Secer?tor (Reaper; Romanian)
Valkiin Vilineous Schnitter (Reaper; German)

Ah, very interesting.
Thank you three for sharing. I love how creative people are with naming their characters. That's awesome. <3

Most of the time, like most of y'all have said, I just combine letters to mimic sounds that I personally like in names and what not. Usually there's an "ae" in there or a name ending with a or i. Then again things like my pen names, Emecay or Crjinnyx (Crin) were completely random when I thought of them.

I also found that naming characters after very basic things can be interesting and unique in an odd way. I've had characters named Chart, Henna, even Tape. As much as I love random letter combinations, sometimes very simplistic nouns like that work out nicely.

Personally I use words from different languages, colors or words from specific religions (aka Rasta). If I am truly stuck, I will go to trusted old Google and look up unique names :P

I mainly name my characters from reference. For example, Altserj was named after Alt-J, an indie band I was listening to when I created her.

Other times, I make the name up on my own. For example, Zylan was just a flash of idea in my head.

I used to name my characters by a foreign language all the time, but that seems cheesy now. Kiefer-Zahn is German for Jaw-Tooth (according to GT).

I used to RP on YouTube (I know, who knew there was RP there?) In my beginning stages of RP, and I really liked the names the users came up with. Auru, Pestilence, Cobalt, and I think Lean was one of them..? Anyhow, I just used a few names from my old YouTube buddies. Another way I figure out names is using other languages for them. I've used Aegean and Ionian (after the seas near Greece) for two of them. I tend to get a few of them from books and songs! I used Rontu for one of them, and Rakuen for another (Rakuen is a song from Wolf's Rain soundtrack). And one last method is getting them from offline. xD Super lazy way, but it saves me lots of time.

Well, I most likely like to create my own made up names.
I'm best with WC names.
I named my deer once as Rimfrost.
And my fursona TinyTail.
One time I made up a name Zesel.
And I like it. :3

I either think them up, or look up names in different languages.

I find an assortment of letters that sound good, for example, Ssyveh. Names usually have an odd spelling, but are easy to pronounce. (Name generators often help)

Amara's name mean "joy" in an African language. 'Nuff said on that.

Oh, I also will pick names that just sound cool. A pitbull named trigger. A creature named Clock. An alien dubbed Remix. All that good stuff.

When it comes to naming my characters, the names I come up with are made up. Some of my character names are common names you would see around the game, but most of them are made up.

~Names based on character names I've heard but modified them

Example: My bobcat character Kojak got his named based on an anime character who had the name of Bojack. I just changed the "B" to a "K" and knocked off the "c".

So Bojack ---> Kojak

Example: My kreptis character has the name of Vixyne. I just took the name Vixye and modified it by putting "ne" at the end.

Vixy ---> Vixyne.

~Names based on pets or people I know.

Example: My fox character Kopper was named after a little dog I used to care for. His name was spelled "Kopper" instead of "Copper".

Example: My Warriorstuck character Anahi was inspired from someone I used to know. I thought it was a unique name.

My other characters; Amalthea, Marik, and Bakura are fanbased characters... so they were named after characters from books/TV/movies and so on.

Well, for Jake I remembered my old dog, and he was a small-ish one so I decided let's name him Jake...Then I went to creatin!  And that's how Jake was formed

Well it all depends really. First I'll chose my character and a personality with a backstory and everything else, I'll look at the picture and probably try and think up a name for some, sometimes I come up with them but I'm sure they're already names, ones I thought of were Suitana, Leilani, Kyber, Mishka, Kanti and Akecheta. But some names I'll get from pets I've had, my families had, friends, tv shows and sometimes I'll use the internet. Once I've gotten are ones such as Teegan, Micah, Rukk, Toby, Scrappy, Imara, Milo, Kita and many many more.

So really it all depends I'll either use my mind, internet or tv shows or pets me, my friends and family have had, sometimes I even get them off other people, but that's it really.

I always use names like the colors or personality of the char, etc. Darkness = Brutal and Dark   or   Honey=Sweet and fun-loving  :D So yeah , that's how i name my chars ;)

~latches onto this topic with teeth~

People always make fun of me for how I make my character's names. I do admit, it's a bit of trial and error, but I'll show you the main ways. :3

Number One:
An elvish name generator, as linked. I type in random names, and then use the elvish translations.

http://www.chriswetherell.com/elf/ (http://www.chriswetherell.com/elf/)

Number Two:
I bash my keyboard and then derive names from the resulting mess.

eg)

Bash: jduflbmx
Attempts at names:
- Jedulf
- Jedda
- Dufex
- Ulfor
- Bemex

Etc.

Number Three:
The good ol' name lookup. Googling 'cool names' or 'weird names' etc.

That's just a few of my ways to give a character a name - I personally like the keyboard bash the best. c:

I usually name my characters upon their personality/color. I then translate the word to either Welsh, Latin, Hungarian or Greek.
ex: My character Kairos, which mood changes like the weather. Weather = Kairos in Greek.

For WC characters, it's a bit different. I didn't always stick to traditional WC names. For example, my characters Voidsoul and Soulshatter. Now I stick to more original and traditional names. I simply look at them and try to spot a possible prefix. It takes me some time. Sometimes I'm inspired by something. Well, most of the time. Everytime.
ex1: Nightcreek, name inspired when I searched on a WC names website, the suffix 'creek' came in.
ex2: Lindenkit, because I have a huge linden in my front yard, that's the only thing I could think about.

Sometimes, though, I name my characters after characters of movies/books/series. It's rare, though. BUT, under this rare case, I made a cat version of The Doctor, a cat version of Anna and a cat version of Elsa with different names though but
ex1: cat Elsa = Eira which means snow in Welsh
Ex2: cat Doctor = whatever it is, it's just doctor translated in Greek

Well, that's all. I've got nothin' else. -flees-

Haha, I normally use Google Translate for my names, usually from English to Latin or so. But my fursona's name, Hetailah, came from an Indian song that I heard of. I swear I heard them say "hetailah" in it or something, but I looked in the lyrics and there wasn't, but from what I heard it gave me the perfect name idea and I just turned it into Hetailah!

Hehehe, very interesting methods you guys have.
[I personally like the keyboard bashing one. Might need to give that a try. >;3]

I do agree, most of my characters get their names based off of their color or personality. Like I said, recently I've been sticking to cool names I've happened across in the Bible.
There's some characters that just immediately bring a name to my mind simply because of their personality or how they look. Like my coyote character- who is named Manasa (again, a Biblical name).

So yeah, I guess I name mine simply because of their appearance and personality- though if they're based on someone/something that plays a key role.

For example, my dire wolf, Kelso- he is based off of Thomas Hickey from Assassin's Creed 3.
Because Hickey is from the England/Ireland region, I looked up a map of the area and chose the name Kelso from the name of one of the area's cities.

There are so many options to choose, but sometimes when I don't feel creative enough to make up a name simply, I'll use google translate to find a simple name in a different language. xD Or, on rare occasions, a name inspired by someone. Like Icarus, for example, named after someone in a myth I heard. (Look it up if you wish.)

But, sometimes I do in fact just make up the name itself if I'm not too lazy, like Shinru or Eacho, right out of the blue. I guess it really just depends?

I make up my character names most of the time but sometimes I go on google and write "Male animal names" or "Female animal names", depends what gender. I also LOVE unique names so I sometimes go on google and write down "Unique male names" or "Unique female name".
Last but not least, I like Greek god names. Example: Zeus, Prometheus, Athena etc..

I don freaking know How I name my characters, honestly XD.

Sometimes I go random on the names such as... Saven, Juope, Heronacta, Kezar,Uiro

Sometimes I name them after planets/stars/KPO......Haumea, Jupiter, Xena

And sometimes I play it casual.....Joseph, Lukas, Benjamin, Kai

But I also translate the words. such as the name 'Beybin' its the end in the meaning 'Insane' in another

language.Hint hint insane character.

Even sometimes other meanings by the hebrew and the indians, etc. Such as Ariav (Father is a lion)

I usually name my characters after words in vague foreign languages. .w. I used to like Gaelic (e.x. my wolf character Reithe, which means "ram" after his horns), and I still kind of do, but now I'm more into Ainu (e.x. my pampas fox Shinnam, "coldness" since I created him for the holiday party a few months ago). Other times I name them after obscure songs or song lyrics, or I look at a name-picking website for random inspiration. But I particularly like the foreign languages, yes.

Ahhh...
Desdaemona Was a nickname in my childhood and I still go by it.
Rikinae- Riki was another nickname from my childhood where I used to say "nyea" a lot.
Canturnr- "Can't Turn Her"
Nicais- A name from a book. I plan to name my child that someday.
Ingroma- 'in- grah- oo-mah' Plain mockery on my part.
Trywanai- 'TrEE whann-E"... Tia Wannai as in Tai Bwo Wannai Trio
Fevrlaen- 'Fever-lay N'- I was sick at the time and was playing with "Fever I am laying in"
Drogen/Mr.Acidic- He was an outlet for insane rage. Drogen was a play on something I suppose I shouldn't mention here.

Its honestly just basic foolery on my part, or something has a personal connection to me. Sometimes, I just want to create as many characters as I can with the oddest names. This isn't even the beginning.

How I came up with Bliss' name:
Bliss is a calm and cheerful feline, and Bliss is another word for 'paradise'. If everyone was like Bliss, it would be paradise :P Or, you could jut say that Bliss's own world is Paradise.

Whisper:
I came up with this OC when speedpainting Bliss, but it became a whole new character! I was feeling sad and deppressed that way, so Whisper is blue-gray, and she is shy, and silent, barely speaks.

Nitro:
Then there is Nitro, he is a WIP OC for me who has quite the attitude, and his name just souned badass, which he likes to be seen as :P

Those are just my main OC's the others are just muuur XD

Orion *
Leo
Lupus
Scorpio
Sky *
Moon
Star

I don't like to name my characters obviously. Like, a sweet character won't be named honey. Instead, I use a baby-name site that gives you the meaning of the name! According to it, Batu means loyal, so my loyal wolf character is Batu! I believe Liam means lost/broken, and one of my least sane characters had that name.
