ROCKETTAIL
WARRIOR OF SHADOWCLAN

THE BASICS

NAME,
His name is ROCKETTAIL.
GENDER,
Rockettail is a MALE character.
AGE,
Rockettail is TWENTY-TWO moons old.
POSITION,
Rockettail is a WARRIOR of SHADOWCLAN.
SHORT DESCRIPTION,
Rockettail is a SCRUFFY DARK GREY TOM with COLD BLUE eyes and LARGE CLAWS.
STATS,
STR;; 3.
STA;; 2.
DEX;; 3.
SPE;; 4.
APPEARANCE,
The most peculiar thing about Rockettail is his rather unflattering scruffy dark gray pelt that doesn't ever seem to reflect the light of day or moonlight. His dark gray fur seems to stick out at every angle possible, as if Rockettail has never groomed himself since his mother gave him baths as a kit. Truth be told, he doesn't groom his pelt. "Too much of a hassle." is what he says. But he doesn't ever appear to mind the consquences of never grooming his coat, that include a dull color, matted furr, getting his fur tangled up, and his scruffy look. But that's far from the only thing weird about Rockettail. He has big ears. Not like the cute, chibi ears that you see in cartoons: he's got big, long, elf ears, and on a cat, it's far from attractive. Does he care? Of course not. The better to hear ya' with, right!? Now Rockettail's build may make him appear small at first, but in reality he is actually a pretty normal size for a tom. What makes him seem so small is his skinny, lanky figure. He doesn't have overly long limbs, but his lack of all buffness makes him appear to have long limbs. The only muscle he does have is the hidden stuff: deep in his shoulders, chest, under his arms, and in his hips. The existing muscle in his shoulders, as well as his overly long, curved front claws greatly aids him in his talent for climbing trees. His front claws are so big that he doesn't even bother to sheathe them when doing regular activities in day to day life. But they are the only thing he does take care of. He can be seen fiddling with his claws, then licking them clean and shiny, then playing with them some more.

Rockettail's eyes even can't be fitted into the category of a normal cat's features. He has large eyes of a cold blue color, which seem to be always giving a wild, almost insane expression to his face. His face is just as not flattering as his fur. He has very prominent cheek bones that give his face a guant appearance, while the small tuffts of fur on his cheeks just don't fit the picture right. he has a pointy nose, but his muzzle isn't all that long, while his chin seems to also come to a sharp point, even though it is mostly fur. right between his elf ears on the top of his head, he has an out-of-place tufft of fur that gives his head a pointy look. There's few other words to describe his... pointy head. At least you can relate a few words to his tail. The tip can be described as "tufted", but with one side of his tail tip fur going the wrong way, it really looks like a demon tail, and looks especially odd to other cats.

THE TRAITS

PERSONALITY,
Rockettail is known for his carefree attitude, whether it creeps others out, annoys the heck out of them, or gives them something to giggle about. He's willing to comment about anything that's on his mind, and doesn't think twice about the consequences. This often gets him in to trouble, but he hasn't yet learned from his actions. Most of the time, though, when Rockettail is around those who, of the majority, tolerate him, he can be the biggest goofball. Around the ones who hate his guts, he gets a little creepy, finding it difficult to act normal, or whatever he believes is normal. But when he is around those who appreciate him for who he truly is, of which are few, he can more easily show how caring he truly is for his clanmates, which he won't hesitate to risk everything for.

He has a protective and supportive personality. He can be very violent and get into fights a lot, but really has a kind heart. He supports his friends and tries to encourage and help them. Even though he can't help but tease his clan mates all the time, he is actually quite protective of them, and will show this trait when it counts. Due to the disrespect he receives from others, he sometimes claims that he aims to surpass his clan-mates, one day. He is clueless at times such as saying phrases wrong or just being oblivious. Despite this, he is sometimes able to connect with someone's feelings to his own. He's not the type of cat for chores, or duties, though he was able to pass his assessments and become a warrior.
Rockettail is immature, which leads other cats into showing him little respect. He is headstrong and is often very open with his friends. However, even his friends sometimes have a hard time handling his personality. He does actually have a small soft-spot for kits, and will act noticeably more gentle around them. Last but not least, Rockettail's well known weakness, another thing that gets him into big trouble, is for pretty she-cats.
LIKES,
  • himself
  • climbing trees
  • hunting
  • fighting
DISLIKES,
  • being offended
  • boredom
  • border patrols
FEARS,
  • death
  • unacceptance
FLAWS,
  • selfish
  • unsocial
  • lazy
  • apathetic

THE HISTORY
FAMILY
  • MOTHER: Shadow - sleek black tom with green eyes.
  • FATHER: Creek - thin gray she-cat with blue eyes.
  • ADOPTED MOTHER: Dawncloud- gray and white patched she-cat with yellow eyes.
HISTORY, Rockettail never really met his father. His father was a famous rogue, known to almost all of the kittypets. Nobody messed with Shadow. Rockettail was very young, barely a moon old, when during a storm, his mother never returned to their den on the edge of a forest. Rebellious even as a kit, he took it upon himself to go look for her. He was very blessed by Starclan to have wandered just into Shadowclan territory before he collapsed of exhaustion, and was completely vulnerable to attack by anything you could list off. Rockettail was found by Dawncloud. She was pregnant at the time with her own kits, and adopted Rockettail, keeping his origins a secret, kitting on the very day she brought Rockettail to the camp with her. Only the medicine cat knows that Rockettail wasn't clan-born, but due to Dawncloud's friendship with the medicine cat, the medicine cat agreed to keep it a secret.

Rockettail became an apprentice, but he had a hard time focusing. His skills in combat and hunting were fine, but his attention span and attitude about chores were not. Even so, he eventually became a warrior.

Howlingstar's HISTORY, PT 2.

Time seemed to pass quickly. Thunderclan's leader died, and the deputy was banned from becoming leader for having kits with a Riverclan cat, and so a tiger-striped tabby she-cat known as Tigerstar stepped forward, and was accepted by Starclan with welcome paws as leader of Thunderclan. Howlingstar and Tigerstar got along better than most, and they fought alongside each other much more often than naught in battles, coming to trust each other in that respect. Tigerstar was also one of the cats that supported him when he was down, for she had once for a while been suspected of having a kittypet father, however their relationship was more out of respect than any other. By this time, several of the older cats that used to disapprove of Howlingstar's acceptance into the clan and graduation to warrior status had either died, or retired to the elder's den and gotten over their hatred. So when the critical time came for Tigerstar to choose a deputy, few cats objected when she chose Howlingstar for deputy.

Humble, he was extremely grateful to Tigerstar. In fact, this was a huge turning point in his life, for being chosen as deputy and being accepted by his clan as deputy seemed to finally decree that he was a true Thunderclan cat, an honorable warrior, and one to be acknowledged for his valiant deeds as a warrior. Howlingstar would never let Tigerstar forget how grateful he was to her for trusting him as her deputy. Honored, he certainly was. Howlingstar took his new job seriously, and soon enough, he was a pro at it. He had an exceptional mind at picking out balanced patrols, and was a great aid to Tigerstar when discussing battle plans, and pulling them all through in their time of need. Together with Tigerstar and Kestrelclaw, Howlingstar fought off the Windclan invadors who came to try and steal prey, signalling the first of the events known to Thunderclan of the great famine in Windclan.

Although it was plain as day that Howlingstar and Whitesplash were friendly enough to be mates, they had both shyly stayed off the subject whenever it came up. This could most likely be due to Howlingstar's tendency to take the utmost caution towards anything related to his own personal feelings. He simply never ever wanted to have an emotional break down like he had done before. He had definitely matured, however he was still cautious and careful. He had come a long way to have all the blessings he had now; he had way too much to lose at risk. Howlingstar did eventually man up one day that he was taking a catnap and awoke to find him and Whitesplash alone in the forest. The timing was perfect, and he told the ever forgiving, never judging she-cat exactly how he felt for her. He knew he was taking a huge risk, but he was a fool for even worrying that Whitesplash might reject him. Maybe he had finally found true happiness that would last. Was it really safe to say he had finally found love?

After that, it was hardly even a moon before Whitesplash announced that she was expecting Howlingstar's kits, and Howlingstar thought he would explode with joy. As soon as his duties were over, the anxious deputy would always go straight to the nursery to check on Whitesplash, even weeks before she was expected to begin kitting. The season was New-leaf, the perfect time of the year for the greatest likelihood of a healthy litter. For Howlingstar, life couldn't possibly be happier. He had found a mate who truly loved him for who he was, and now he was going to be a father to the beautiful she-cat's kits. Even though sometimes it felt like the longest wait ever, it was also the shortest wait, for each day brought closer the greatest blessing Howlingstar could ever ask for. Whitesplash had three kits: A fluffy ginger and white tabby tom, and two calico she-cats, one as fluffy as the tom, and the other much smaller than her littermates. The happy parents named their kits together. The tom was Emberkit, the fluffy calico she-cat was Brightkit, and the small calico she-cat was Mousekit. Howlingstar knew that the only thing more wonderful in life than kits and acceptance was family.

Fate can't stay wonderful and nice forever. Mousekit, the "runt" of the litter, was physically weak and unhealthy. The first tragedy in Howlingstar's new family struck when the kit was found not breathing one morning, less than a week after the birth. It was a devastating blow to the entire family, and to the Clan who cheered on the couple from the sidelines. Unlike the times before when Howlingstar would take some time to mourn for himself, this time, he had a familly to support, and had to force himself to move on if not for his own dignity, but for his family that needed him most. Howlingstar seemed to see this as another reason to work extra hard. He sent patrols out, and went on the patrols too. He worked himself ragged sometimes even, going on patrols every day, and visiting the nursery to see his new family even when he was half asleep and should probably have headed straight for the warrior's den. Eventually, Emberkit and Brightkit were apprenticed to their mentors, Echofire and Pumpkinflower.

But Cruel Fate wasn't done playing with Howlingstar's family life yet. Leaf-fall had just barely begun when Whitesplash and Brightpaw caught greencough. It was so sudden, and the two were losing strength every day. Howlingstar could hardly believe what was happening to his mate and daughter; the reality of it all was crueler than anything that he could remember. He tried everything he could to save them, but in what seemed like overnight, Whitesplash and Brightpaw took their last breaths and went to be in Starclan. He had finally found love, and now his love had been stolen away from him. The only living family member Howlingstar had left then was his quiet son, Emberpaw. Howlingstar vowed to raise his son up to be a good, honorable warrior.

The father and son supported each other through this tough time, and boy was it tough. This had to be, by far, the worse loss. Even worse so was that neither would allow themselves to mourn for the sake of the clan and each other. Like every other tradegy before, this event changed Howlingwind, but what worried him was how much of an effect it had on Emberpaw. The young tom had always been quiet, shy and polite. Howlingwind wondered what his son's hidden feelings were many times. Howlingstar sought to take on the burden for what remained of his family for the sake of his son and his clan. His efforts were not in vain, as Emberpaw looked up to his father very affectionately. Howlingstar however had conceded to live on with his grief.

The situation was similar with Pumpkinflower, who also was living with the loss of a loved one, but what the two didn't do that they should have, was talk to each other about it even once. Conversations with his old best friend were few, and lacking in any emotion. Howlingstar feared for their friendship more than anything now, but he was hesitant about approaching her about it, knowing that he could not make the same mistake again like before that led to the disaster of ruining hers and his honor, and as a deputy, he knew better than to take risks when he had way too much to lose. One day, when he was taking a walk with his son, Emberpaw, he happened to meet Pumpkinflower talking with Cloudfeather from Windclan across the border.

Only recently had Windclan attacked Thunderclan for the piece of moors on Thunderclan's side of the stream, and lost to Thunderclan, so Howlingwind was pleased to hear that Windclan was faring well, and appeared to have no more need to fight for territory. He hadn't realized how badly he and Pumpkinflower had come to understand each other until before he knew it, he was being accused of scolding Pumpkinflower for suspecting friendship between her and Cloudfeather. Indeed, he knew that it wasn't common for most warriors to be so friendly with outsiders, but he also knew and liked that Pumpkinflower was that way to everyone; it was her kind and caring heart that he had mentored that he would never become a stranger to. But the strong feelings of rejection without any provocation left him confused and helpless.

They say that even in the time of greatest pain, however, courage will get you through, and make you stronger. Like the final battle before the golden age, that final conflict made both cats realize what was happening. Howlingstar had gone out one early, rainy dawn, when Pumpkinflower joined him. They were alone, and before the two knew it, they were spilling out everything about how they felt. Howlingstar was overjoyed that their friendship was being mended stronger than before. Then they realized that they were more a like than any other two cats. They had both lost a loved one, and desperately needed more than anything to be loved by someone, and it was at that time that Howlingstar remembered the true feelings he had always held for the beautiful tortoiseshell tabby she-cat, his best friend and favorite cat in the whole world.

Maybe he had finally found his own happily ever after. Maybe they had both finally found their own happily ever after. Howlingstar realized that all along, the one true friend he had was right beside him. The two came together closer than ever before.

While his personal issues were now solved, the status of the clans was far from solved. Thunderclan and Shadowclan were about to go to war due to a misunderstanding. Warriors, apprentices, deputies and medicine cats from both clans had been discovered dead on the border. Little did the angry clans, seeking vengeance for their clanmates,, know that the true blame fell upon a small group of violent rogues that wished to destroy the clans for their territories. In the first battle against Shadowclan, Tigerstar lost two lives. Almost immediately, the medicine cat of Thunderclan received a desperate warning from Starclan that their enemy could not be found in the shadows, but cloaked in light. This obviously meant that Shadowclan was not to blame, but now, Shadowclan's medicine cat having received a similar message, the two clans turned their blame to Windclan. They were desperate. Someone, or another had murdered their clanmates, and they wanted revenge. A rare occurance then happened. Tigerstar agreed with Whirlstar, the leader of Shadowclan then, to ally themselves up against Windclan.

The clans were desperate for a scapegoat, and another war raged through the territories as Thunderclan and Shadowclan attacked Windclan and Riverclan  on Thunderclan's territory. Truth be told, Windclan had also discovered one day, both of its medicine cats murdered, as well as the death of a few of its warriors and apprentices. Having been unable to blame Riverclan for it, Windclan and Riverclan aimed their hatred toward the northern territories. Some elders say it was the darkest time the clan had ever known. Nothing ever had come close to this scale of a war, and over false accusations, Starclan had never been more worried about the fate of the clans since the war with the Dark Forest.

During the course of the great war, all of the leaders lost many lives, leaving Tigerstar down to just one. Whirlstar of Shadowclan lost his last life. Many warriors were lost in the war, and Howlingstar was extremely grateful to Starclan more than ever that they had spared his family the fates of the other warriors. After the war, it was a huge blow to the clans' morals to discover from their medicine cats that the entire war was meaningless. The four clans then began working together to find the true culprets. Eventually, the search mission brought results, and the eight white rogue cats, their white pelts being the source of Starclan's message of "an enemy cloaked in white", were captured and brought to justice. In the end, Tigerstar lost her last life at the still-young age of thirty-eight moons, and Howlingstar found himself with the future of Thunderclan from here on out in his paws.

Howlingstar's HISTORY, PT 1.

You probably know by now that Howlingstar was a former kittypet. His mother's name was Clarice, and he, his two brothers and one sister were named Brownie, Stripey, Watermelon, and Cookie by the family's 5 year old daughter. He never knew his father, who was known by the name of Wolf for his great size and lupine features which Howlingstar himself inherited. His mother was very kind and gentle and loving to her kits, even though this litter was more or less an accident, and the four kits' fates would be decided by the newspaper ads in the pets section.

He was adopted at a very young age as a kit to his twoleg owners, however his owners had evil twoleg kits that loved to torture him and beat him, bringing him to have a serious hatred for his twolegs. While at first he was allowed to go outside occasionally, where he would immediately head into the forest to go hunting, it was one day that he decided to play outside after dark that got him in trouble with his twolegs, and he was not allowed to go outside anymore. When he was about five moons old, he received his three metal bands upon his already-larger-than-normal right foreleg. He was kind of used to the twolegs torturing him by tying him up in their pelts(dress up), so at first he just ignored them. If he tried to take them off right away, his twolegs would beat him, and of course jam the rings on tighter next time. Maybe they would try tugging on the rings until they were higher up on his leg where his limb was thicker, something he would not find pleasant, as his twolegs were not gentle in the least.

However, the days went by, and the twolegs didn't take the rings off. Howlingstar, known by the kittypet name of "Brownie" then, for his brown fur, just so happened to be going through a growth spurt, and before he knew it, the rings wouldn't come off anymore. His twolegs thought it was the most amazing thing they had ever done to the poor tom. He was lucky his twolegs were so cheap. Why pay money just to have your cat fixed? Howlingstar used the litterbox and couldn't care less about spraying, and he usually didn't have much to yowl enthusiastically about, since half the time he would be found crouching upon his cat tree, glaring and hissing at his twolegs when they got too close. He began to remember the days when he would run about freely through the forest. Those were the best days of his life at that time, so why was he here, hissing and growling at his twolegs which hurt him? The only thing he wanted was to be free. He was having a harder time moving around; the metal rings frequently caused his paw terrible pain, and it hurt to even walk. But that would not keep Howlingstar from giving up. The twolegs underestimated him, thought it amusing how the rings made him limp with every step. They stood in the doorway, pointing at him, laughing at him, and were prepared, baseball bat in hand when he launched himself at them. But he wasn't going to attack them. To the twolegs' surprise, he ran right by them, outside, and was gone from that place called Hell forever.

Of course the first place Howlingstar went to was the forest visible from the fence post of his old twoleg nest. From there, he kept running, deeper into the forest. The joy at simply being free, finally, was too great to comprehend, and he could probably have been heard yowling ecstatically for a mile in all directions. So when he [almost] stumbled into the Thunderclan camp, howling his head off, he got his apprentice name: Howlingpaw. He was very lucky he was running slow enough to stop before he tumbled into the Stone Hollow. The entire clan was more shocked by the strange scene of the sight of the big young tom who could be heard from a mile away. Of course a six month old tom was no threat to the clans, and Howlingstar was met with several odd stares, which he returned with just as much surprise. Howlingstar ironically was a very curious young tom back then, and wanted nothing more than to know everything about the Clans. Naturally, Thunderclan was very hesitant at even the thought of letting a kittypet on their territory, but more than any other clan, the argument always came up: Firestar had been a kittypet. There were several counter-arguments, like that there were no prophecies about Howlingstar, and that Howlingstar was obviously crippled, and could be more of a hindrance to the clan than an asset. Somehow, though, it was decided that Howlingstar could be given a chance to prove his worth.

He was able to overcome his disability with his strength in spirit as well as in body. But even as Firestar had it, Howlingstar got his fair share of hardships from his own clanmates for his past, and it wasn't any help that, unlike Firestar, he still had the marks of a kittypet in the form of the shackles on his foot. His paw still gave him pain, and in time, his right dewclaw became completely useless, the nerves destroyed, all blood supply cut off, and the tissue suffocated. But that was the worst of his physical troubles with the metal rings, for that claw served as a cushioning, sparing the rest of his digits from the same fate, and eventually he was given back nearly full usage of his right paw, of course except forhis dew claw. This did set him back in his hunting abilities; hunting with only one dew claw was harder than you could imagine. It was like trying to catch something with only one thumb; have you ever tried that? He made up for this, however, with his remarkable natural talent in battle.

Although it never really went anywhere, Howlingstar did at some point try to make his rings seem more like a blessing than shackles that bound him to his fate as a kittypet forever by showing, and proving, how he could use them to knock cats clean out with a single blow to the head. The odd style of fighting was only seen as another weird way of the kittypet. "Then why don't we all go around putting animal fangs in kittypet collars to give us neck protection!?" Was a counter argument by one of his clan mates, and the whole clan joined in a good, long laugh. Howlingstar hadn't found it as funny. There was, however, one cute young she-cat in the clan who always managed to catch his eye. It was none other than Whitesplash, who at the time was still a kit, but was expected to become an apprentice by the next moon. Howlingstar had only just joined Thunderclan when Whitesplash, Whitekit at the time, was born. Many of the elders, senior warriors, deputy and leader were concerned about really going through with this all and allowing Howlingstar to graduate as a warrior, for they had originally decided to train him out of curiosity, not only for the Firestar legend, but because of what an odd cat he was.

But his skills as a fighter couldn't be denied, and Howlingstar eventually became a warrior. His faith in Starclan could not possibly be broken, especially after speaking to Starclan at the Moonpool with his mentor, a rough old brown tabby and white tom with blue eyes named Talloak. Talloak was a tough mentor, only accepting Howlingstar's every best effort in everything, but a good warrior at heart, never taking pity on Howlingstar when the others picked on him, but supporting him all the way. After Howlingstar's warrior ceremony, Talloak retired to the elder's den with pride for his last apprentice. Only a few weeks after Howlingstar became a warrior, earning his name, "Howlingwind", another she-cat, Pumpkinflower, Pumpkinkit at the time, was born.

Howlingstar participated and aided Thunderclan in many battles, proving his loyalty and worth several times over again. He still continued to be attacked for his kittypet origins, as well as for the rings that still clasped tight as ever to his foot. If you were to look a little closer, you would notice that his right dew claw is noticeably smaller than the left one, having died early in his life. The extra tissue cushioned the rings against his leg, and allowed for restricted growth of the rest of his paw. His mentor was a very honorable cat, and had taught him many great virtues. Howlingstar was devastated when the following leaf-bare, his mentor lost his life to greencough. He vowed he would never forget his mentors last words, directed at him, to never, ever lose sight of what he knew in his heart was justice, and to always trust in Starclan, even when all seemed lost. Those words have gotten him through the worst of times imaginable.

Howlingstar found that one of the things that most fascinated him was kits. Every birth in Thunderclan brought his gentle warrior's heart to tears of joy, especially when he saw the kits for the first time, and understood the significance of miracles like these. Howlingstar had discovered his love for kits even back when Whitekit, now Whitepaw, soon to become a warrior, was born. Because of that, he has always had a very soft, tender spot for kits and apprentices, and has has the joy of mentoring many apprentices. Howlingstar's first apprentice ever as a warrior was the beautiful young tortoiseshell tabby she-cat, Pumpkinflower, then known as Pumpkinpaw. Even by then, Howlingstar met with disapproval wherever he turned about his kittypet origins. Some could argue that it was even worse now that he was a warrior. Several warriors, senior warriors, elders, apprentices, and cats from other clans felt that he should not have been allowed to become a warrior of Thunderclan. The only friend he really had at the time was Pumpkinflower and Whitesplash. The two young she-cats never ever discriminated or considered his past life as a kittypet. They were of the very few cats who treated him for who he was.

Although Pumpkinflower was his apprentice, he knew in his heart that it was Pumpkinflower to saved him from darkness, for at some point, the stress was so great, Howlingstar had even considered leaving for everyone's sake. Pumpkinflower became his best friend. but when he began to have feelings for the young apprentice, the drama only got worse, for it was terribly looked down upon to take an apprentice as a mate. Howlingstar was an emotional mess. When he managed to show the leader what an honorable warrior he was, and received the privilege to go to the Gathering, he broke down to a Windclan warrior's cruel taunts and dishonored himself and his clan. Howlingstar had never felt so alone. It was only worse that he and Pumpkinflower had just gotten into a fight the day before. As much as it really, really hurt, he knew that the best thing to do was to man it out and encourage Pupmkinflower to find happiness with a handsome white tom her age named Yangheart, also a non-clan-born cat: a former rogue.

It seemed like that was how everyone's happily ever after would turn out. Pumpkinflower and Yangheart eventually became warriors, and Howlingstar couldn't possibly be more proud of his first apprentice. Everyone was happy, except for Howlingstar. He was broken and defeated. Pumpkinflower didn't need him anymore; she had Yangheart. The deputy hated his guts and thought he was not even worthy to be friends with Pupmkinflower anymore. The leader was indifferent. Almost every other warrior and apprentice in the clan was disappointed in him. Honorable warrior? It certainly didn't describe him now. Right now, the best thing for him and everyone else would be to leave the clans alone for good. Those were the words coursing through his mind those days. He expected never to get another apprentice again. Whitesplash was busy all the time with her own apprentice. It really had gotten this bad.

Howlingstar was seriously getting ready to say his goodbyes, expecting to hear only "Good riddance!" as his farewells. But if this was how the story ended, you'd all know I was lying, for here he is now. In fact, the very morning Howlingstar was walking outside the camp entrance, Whitesplash came up to him and invited him to go with her and her apprentice on the dawn patrol. Speechless with surprise, he took up her offer. And that was the beginning of his best days with Whitesplash. She had saved him from himself. And before he knew it, he realized he had again allowed himself to fall in love. The two got along as well as the closest frolicking kits. He found no one could cheer him up like Whitesplash. Even when he let himself feel down and begin to think about all his sorrows, it just so happened to be that the pretty white and brown splotched female would appear and cheer him right back up again. Even when the rest of the clan would continue to taunt him and make fun of him, Whitesplash always seemed to surprise her clan with her kindness toward the pitiful former kittypet. He really didn't understand why she was so kind to him, of all toms in the clan. There were plenty of other handsome, honorable toms in the clan, but whenever the choice seemed to come up, the beautiful she-cat would always trot cheerfully up to Howlingstar's side.

Things really never stayed wonderful for long. Never in all the elders' greatest memories has a time been known without tragedy. Pumpkinflower's mate, Yangheart was killed in an accident. It broke Howlingstar's heart to see Pumpkinflower so crushed by the blow of the tragedy, and it was only Whitesplash's support that kept him from being consumed by his own guilt for being unable to cheer his old apprentice no matter how hard he tried. The only thing he was more afraid of was earning Pumpkinflower's anger towards him in her anguish, but he felt even more frustrated when his words had no effect, and he had to tell himself that the best thing he could do for her was to leave her be, and trust her to be strong like he mentored her up to be. Even if that's what he, and the other members of the clan told him to do, he still worried for her. This would be another tragedy to add up to her already-long list of tragedies. He felt guilty for ever thinking that his was a pitiful case at all. To have been born into a loving, promising family, and having it taken away from you before you can comprehend it, and then losing your last chance for happiness...he could hardly imagine it, but he honestly didn't want to, and his worry for Pumpkinflower only increased.
