Game Discussion / Re: Problem with mate
« on: September 15, 2013, 06:52:39 pm »
I may come off as insensitive in saying this, or I might have misinterpreted the situation, so I'm sorry in advance if that's the case, but I feel it needs to be said. In-character and out-of-character have apparently gotten dangerously muddled here. If this is a strictly in-the-RP problem between your characters, this isn't the place to bring it up and it would belong more on an RP board. If you're actually emotionally invested and/or one or both of you has taken the relationship too far beyond the characters you're playing, you both need to sit yourselves down, have a chat WITHOUT the characters involved (make sure you are both clear on this), and figure out exactly what the problem is. If one of you wants the RP to go a way that the other doesn't, you should find someone else to roleplay with. It's reasonable to feel committed to a particular RP partner if you've formed a friendship, but you should NEVER mistake romance between two wolves on your screen as romance between the two humans behind it.

Unless the two of you (not your character and the other player's character) are ACTUALLY in a relationship in real life, keep the following in mind: FeralHeart is not real life, and you do not know the person behind the screen. You are not in a relationship with the person behind the screen. They are only characters, they are not you. Treating them as anything but in situations like this is NOT a good idea.

Game Discussion / Re: The Most Unrealistic Characters
« on: September 15, 2013, 05:06:29 pm »
On the 'wolfyenas' note, most wolves aren't actually straight grey either. If you look at an (unedited) photo of even the more greyish ones, they've all got at least traces of tawney or brown. Especially pups, which are almost all brown (barring black ones and such).

That only really matters if you're trying to specifically make a super realistic one, though, since any given illustration of a wolf in movies or books will probably be grey and we recognize that as wolfish, even if it is just a really commonly occuring stylization of the actual animal.

I'm usually content to live and let live with realism levels, given that it IS a game and sometimes the results are pretty cool-looking, but there was this one time when I came upon a white tiger with a black mane. He started impromptu RPing (which was cool, since I was bored and in the middle of nowhere in Fluorite), and kept addressing my character (a realistic male Saharan cheetah) as 'she.' When I corrected him, he seemed almost offended and told me that I should have a mane, because all male characters 'have to have manes.' No matter how I tried to explain that the character was supposed to be realistic and cheetahs don't have manes, or that I just don't like putting hair or manes on creatures that don't normally have them, it didn't seem to get through to him; he was just really convinced that if you were a dude you HAD to have a mane. It was a very odd conversation and I eventually just gave up and walked away.

Game Discussion / Re: I Know That, But My Character Doesn't Know Yet

Y'know, this thread could be particularly relevent for the... -pulls out megaphone- FeralHeart Official RP Day on September 28th

But seriously, it'll be interesting to see how that goes for this very reason...

-puffs on pipe- Well, if I recall you could find either one... probably most of them that I saw were semi-realistic; there were elements of realism, but they usually had some twist to add interest. There were a lot more multi-species RPs as well, definitely.

Ah, yes, gather round, young'uns. -pulls out a cane and pipe-

Back in the old days when I first joined, we didn't have no fancy wings or Sky's Rim or South Pole or Lonely Cave, we had five maps and spawned straight in Bonfire and we were grateful! In fact, when I first downloaded the game and signed up, there were so few players that the first time I ever spawned, Bonfire was completely empty. Not a soul in sight and I couldn't find the portal to get out, so I ran around the island by myself for an hour or so trying to figure out how the controls worked. I don't remember how I eventually got out, I think I just found the portal at some point and made my way to Fluorite. I joined up with a bunch of people who were trying to climb the giant rocks near the stone bridge and explored because I didn't know how the whole RP thing worked, and I do recall being somewhat enamoured with the Temple of Dreams and thinking it was the coolest map ever. It was a very different game in its early days; I don't remember ever encountering a Warrior clan in the first year I was there, and there were fewer RPs, but they lasted longer and I swear there was more variety. I joined a few prides that lasted for months; there was one I was in for at least a year and a half, and it had been going for a long time before that. I dunno, something about the social dynamic was just different. Even the mapless prides lasted a long time (which is how I accidentally adopted a cub and we RPed out of the pride because it eventually got really weird, and somehow we're STILL going with a consistent plotline years later). I think most of the people there at first were from IT before it got shut down.

So yeah, that's how I remember it. Fewer, longer-lasting RPs, people actually talked to each other in local without being forced to, no wings, we still had Kovu and regular game updates... kinda miss it.

Oh hey, I forgot this was here. XD But I'd love to RP if I ever bump into any of you (I am literate and do not use wolfspeak, to answer your question).

Ask Me / Re: Ask Tearless!

@OreoHeroz: Actually, I don't really know you well enough to form an opinion one way or another. But the odds that I hate you are slim indeed, because it takes a LOT to get me to hate someone.

@Stargate: I have mild carpal tunnel syndrome, probably because I'm kind of stupid about not taking breaks or stretching when I draw and doing it for hours straight. It's doing better now, just have to be more careful, which I should have been doing anyway.

As for the second question... I feel like that's probably a reference to something, but I have no idea what or even if it is... can't keep up with you kids and yer internets and yer gangnam shakes...

@Hugrf: 1. I'd probably say hi!

2. I like keeping that in the grey area.

3. I'll always be partial to this one.

4. Usually either pencil, Photoshop Elements and a Wacom tablet, or a combination of the two. I'll try any medium that stands still long enough, though.

5. Steam Powered Giraffe (they'e a trio of robot mimes who accidentally started a band a while back and now they're awesome, seriously check out their live show playlist if you're ever bored). I'm also a huge David Bowie fan.

6. Shows: Firefly, Doctor Who, Star Trek: Next Generation, probably a couple others I'm forgetting. Movies: LotR, Captain America (etc.), I, Robot (even though it had nothing to do with the book; read the book), Pacific Rim. Again, probably forgetting some.

7. I don't really have one, but I really love the combination of colours in dark storms. Sort of dark steely blue-grey mottled with lighter greys, maybe with some touches of that light gold colour you get when the sun almost comes through but doesn't.

8. Couldn't pick, it changes from day to day. I'm leaning toward flying foxes (the fruit bat, not actual winged foxes) today. Pretty consistently a fan of cats as well.

9. Honestly, the whole Youtuber community rubs me the wrong way a little so I tend to avoid it. I do occasionally find some of Tobuscus's stuff funny though.

10. Not fluently. Just a little Spanish, and a few words of Sindarin which is completely useless but fun to know and will hopefully impress someone someday.

11. A little twelve pound, EXTREMELY fluffy white Norfolk terrier/chihuahua probably/God-knows-what mix named Akio. He has bat ears and a pink nose. Gotta love rescue dogs.

Oh gosh... last post reminds me of the RP I run; it's a small group of stray dogs in a post-apocalyptic city, and over the time we've been active the storyline frequently gets quite dark, which has resulted in all of us having such convolutedly tragic pasts just from events in the storyline that it's actually kind of funny (One fell in love with the leader of an enemy pack but miscarried their pups and ran off for almost a month to return to her abusive human master, at least two have been captured by mad scientists leaving one mute and the other a mentally unstable sadist, two of us are practically in a blood feud over an exceptionally twisted love triangle... it just keeps getting more over the top as time goes on, we kind of have way too much fun with it). So yeah, I can understand the problem of ridiculous backstories that no one would take seriously, but actually happened.

For all that though, none of those characters whine about it or use those incidents to get sympathy... it's life to them, and they eventually recover and move forward. No one sits around going 'woe is me' unless it furthers the plot.

That's one thing RPers with tragic pasts seem to forget... whatever someone grows up with seems 'normal' to them. To you, the idea of growing up without knowing your parents or having a sibling die might seem like an insurmountable tragedy, but the character likely wouldn't see it that way. It might suck, yes, but it's still just life to them.
