I don't see how I could be missing an update considering that I just downloaded the game yesterday?

I'm a new user and I'm unsure of what I'm doing wrong? I've logged into the game and created my character, but every time I log in I'm able to move around and look at my character, but everything else is black. I'm unsure if this is just the spawn in location/map, or how to leave it?
