I just ran into a pretty similar problem yesterday. I've been trying to figure out what's wrong for a long time. A couple of times, I even reinstalled all the files just in case and poked into my account settings, but unfortunately it only helped to delete the old account so that it wouldn't hang and create a new one 
. You could say that I just gave up and lost to the site, but if there was nothing particularly important on the account, this could also be a kind of solution.
Anyway, if you can find a solution to this problem for yourself (less radical, perhaps), maybe it will help someone else too.
