What mineral is this?
« on: March 27, 2015, 03:31:13 pm »
A few days ago, I was hiking by a creek when I stumbled across a quartz vein. When I examined it, I saw that it contained some yellow-gold colored rocks surrounding the actual quartz crystals. I've heard that gold can be found in quartz, so I was wondering if it was gold, pyrite, or some other type of mineral.

This is what I found.

Does anyone know what type of mineral the gold colored flecks are?

You'll have to break some of it off and test to see if it's pyrite or not.
My guess is that it may be pyrite of something else, but there's a chance it's something resembling gold.

There are a few things you can do to see what it is, just gotta look 'em up.

you can always try the streak test. it's when you scrape the mineral onto a flat surface used to test streaks. if it's possible, you can get a reasonable amount of the golden part from the quartz and test the streak. if it's black it's pyrite. if it's a golden yellow it's gold.

if you can't do something like what is said above then you can attempt to scrape the unknown golden mineral. pyrite is a sulfur compound, and if it's scratched or crushed it gives out a horrible smell.

It's quartz that sure but the yellow look's like a yellow oxyde or suffer,  it's not gold or pyrite because it's on the surface of the quartz.
