Map help?
« on: February 15, 2016, 02:14:49 pm »
*I have no idea where to post this, so please move it if needed.*

I'm brand new at map making, and I am using GIMP. I've created the image, (the little map icon that is at your screen at the top right) and I am trying to save it as a .png image. However, when I try to save it, it says I have to export it instead. I am using the latest updated version of GIMP. So, I figured it could work and I exported it. I put the name in the map maker correctly, but FH stops working every single time. I've tried renaming it, exporting it over and over, anything else I could think of.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Oh, a heightmap!

1- The canvas size should be 513x513
2- Grayscale canvas
3- Use the colors going from Black to white. Make sure it doesn't have a dot of yellow, red, etc.
4- Save it as .png
5- Make sure the Alpha Channel is not on. Go to Layers > Transparency and if it says 'Remove Alpha Channel' is available, remove it.

Also, make a new map in map maker. It's better to start from scratch than borrowing Watermills. Then, you can save your height map (as .png) in the new folder that will show up. It should be the name of your map.

As a side note.

When making a terrain map, be sure to have it named something like.

MAPNAMETerrain.png

If it's not, it can cause ye to crash.

When you export it, do you check all the boxes?
The options are Interlacing (Adam 7)
Save background color
Save Gamma
Save layer offset
Save resolution
Save creation time
Save comment

Okay, so I have done everything you've mentioned. But it still isn't working.

When exporting, simply name it and put it in your textures folder. Leave those check boxes alone

As a side note.

When making a terrain map, be sure to have it named something like.

MAPNAMETerrain.png

If it's not, it can cause ye to crash.

A map terrain can have any name, so long as it is greyscale and 513x513 pixels.

When saving a map terrain, are you flattening the image? If there are multiple layers, it may cause the game to become unresponsive and crash. You can import it, make a new layer then flatten it or simply remake the heightmap if it's easier for you.

Sorry your having issues, hope they are resolved soon!

As a side note, do not give y'er height map's name any spaces! That will cause the game to crash when it loads. Best of luck to ye deary!

Tmw you planned a ten minute nap but instead took a whole year.

I've had Likuu help me and we've even changed it to .jpg, and nothing works.

Sometimes all you have to do is copy the original file and paste it onto a new grayscale canvas. Then save it under a different name. Like said above, make sure there are no layers in the new file other than the one, and you've merged the "Pasted layer" with the background layer below (since I am assuming you are still using Gimp).

As Whisper said, the heightmap name does not actually have to include the word "Terrain" in it, it just needs to be an image file. That is actually one of the biggest FH map misconceptions!
