Quick question about height maps.:3
« on: December 17, 2012, 07:45:40 pm »
I just learned that blurring parts of your height map will slant them instead of causing them to have a blunt edge, but I still don't know how to create a mountain. Would a blurred circle create a pointed structure, or do I have to overlap colors on the center of each other going from darkest to lightest? I've never done mountains before and I need some in all three of my currently planned future maps. c: ("Paineswalk," the town in my novel-in-progress, a recreation of Eaglify's Alaska map since she lost all her files and a full Okami map ;P)

When doing maps, I'd use a reference for an actual grey-scale map (arial). Here is a good one:

When you want to do heights, white is the highest and black is the lowest (often used for ocean floors).

I know. I've made a map before. That's not what I asked.

I might misunderstand you here, but..
When creating a mountain, I would just use the whitest.
Then make my way to darker around the edges and smudge it out, so that it doesn't have straight edges..
Use the blur tool as well if needed.

To create tall landforms such as mountains, you are going to need to use white. Also, you can make it taller or shorter if need be by adjusting the height of your map in mapmaker. c:
