Part 1: Just another night

The night was young, and I just finished a kill. Another punk from the Runner Gang. Another fool who willingly died for a pointless cause. I stared down at his body, crimson blood smearing the surface of his fur. I messed him up pretty good. I stretched one of my paws out and walked away from the alley. Nothing else would be accomplished here. I looked around the street, making sure no cars would drive by, ramming me and smearing me on the pavement.

No cars.

]I continued walking across. As I reached the other side, I saw a shadow. Should I check it out? Would it be another Runner? Or just some loser looking for fortune? I cautiously approached, when I saw a familiar face through the shadows. It was Joca. She made a surprised squeak.

"Isaac!"

She jumped out of the shadows, revealing her bright and feline features. Her fur was like a golden color, while her eyes glowed an ocean blue. She rubbed her head against me. The crazy cat loved me for whatever reason. Even though i'm some dog, and she's a mountain cat. Mountain cat's come down to this city, expecting to own the place when they get here.

"What do you want, Joca?"

My tone may have came out as annoyed, but it had a reason to for it. I saved her sister from some Runners, and she felt that she needed to repay me by loving me. Can't exactly blame her.

"How are you doing, dear?"

She asked me in a friendly tone. With the same amount of sweetness a mother would have towards her sick child.

"Doing fine, babe."

I continued on my way, Joca giving me a friendly lick against my face. Joca, you shouldn't hang out with guys like me. You'll end up dead. End up like the other horror stories you hear about. I walked near a homeless man. He said something to me, and gave me a friendly pat between my ears.

Creatures in this city always complain about humans, calling them out on their ways. Some of them lost their homes, but they shouldn't blame humans. It isn't anybodies fault. The ones who complain about losing their homes are just stuck in the past. They are the people who can't move on after they lose something. A good example is the Runner Gang. The idea of the gang was founded on lost homes.

They punish other creatures, taking everything. Some hail them as heroes. They're no heroes in the city.

I passed by a cat with her kittens. The kittens were probably too young to even see yet. These are the targets the Runners love. They prey on the weak, and then brag about it, as if they took down a bear, who's claws are able to sever an entire tree. They hate people like me, who aren't willing to deal with their crap, and fight back. But i'm no patriot, or anything.

I continued down the side walk, until I bumped into three creatures. Two canines, and one feline. By the way they look at me, they are not doubt Runners.

"It's the bastard himself."

One of them tried his best to insult me. Words don't hurt me.

"You like killing Runners? Huh, Isaac? Showing no mercy to us, and cutting us down?"

I smirked. It was too easy.

"Only on weekends."

Nice one there, Isaac.

The canine roared out and charge at me. He began swinging his claws in an insane flurry. He didn't account for his defense. As he swung one towards my head, I ducked down and through a fast cut towards his belly. He let out a cry as he I made a deep cut in his belly.

The female canine charge for me, but I grabbed onto her neck with my teeth, and shook her around. I tossed her, hitting her against a wall. I don't know what gave me the strength to do that. Maybe it was adrenaline.

The feline charged at me, swiping at me, and clawing my face, probably leaving a good sized cut. I jumped at the feline, and  began biting at his throat madly. He kicked me off, sending me onto the concrete. The three quickly limped away. I took several breaths. I began walking to find some water.

As I neared an alley way, something hits me quick enough for me not to be able to react, and sending me onto the floor. I could hear a voice.

"We got him. Let's take him to Duke."

Going straight to the devil himself. This ought to be fun.

Part 1: Just another night (Cont)

I came too. Those two got me pretty good. I looked around. Just as I expected. Runners everywhere. Some of them smiled, satisfied. Some glared. Either way, they'll want to harm me. They'll want retribution for their punk friends I killed or maimed.

One problem. Where is Duke? He'd want to see me dead. Scarred him pretty bad. Good old Duke. The devil himself. Runs an entire gang, but could really care less for their well being. The bastard kills anyone. Dogs, cats, mountain lions, puppies, kittens, anyone. He may be a brute, but he's not dumb. He could of caught me no problem, but why do that when you have brain dead droolies to do that for you?

As I laid on the floor, pinned down by a couple droolies, there he was. Duke's a Great Dane. He uses his size to scare others into submission.

"So! Isaac! Finally got you. Thanks to those two."

Struggling was pointless. Even if I could get up, i'd get torn apart by the Runners. Duke changed his gaze from me to a female mountain lion. Duke motioned her to come closer. Funny. Mountain lions seem to be stronger to dogs, but compared to Duke, she shrinks in his gaze.

"So.. I heard that you ran away from a fight earlier. What gives?"

I could barely see her face. Terror was very evident in her face.

"I-I'm sorry. It's just-"

"Now now, soldier. I don't want excuses."

The expression on Duke's face changed. He was rarely angry. But when he is, it's never pretty.

"F-F-Forgive my betr-"

Crazy Duke. He latches his teeth around her neck, lifting her up. He throws her around as if she was a kitten. Blood pools from her body.  Duke slams her on the ground a few times for good measure. He then tosses her aside like trash. He looked back up, blood over his jaws. He glared at his disciples.

"This is the price of cowardice folks! If you are too weak to work for the Runners, then you have no use alive! Anyone else feel like running away?!"

Duke looks around, a grin spreading on his face. Everybody was quiet. Probably scared out of their wits.

"Didn't think so."

Duke looks back down at me.

"What do you suppose I do with you, Isaac?"

I looked into his eyes.

"I don't know. Let me go?"

We both let out a burst of laughter, the Runners looking on, confused. Many people think me and Duke are arch-enemies or something, but the way we act towards each other is more like a brother relationship. While Duke does unethical things, I kind of like the bastard. Maybe it's because of everything I saw making me immune to terrible things, and people. Even though he does questionable things, he's not so bad.

Suddenly, I hear a yowl, and something crashing through the building. I hear more yowls, until I can hardly hear myself think. Two dogs run at Duke, attempting to take him down. Duke easily dispatches them, then runs off.

Who are these guys? Some military-like group? Some rival gang? Or a group fighting Duke, hoping to be heroes? Either way, it's not good. I stay down. I'll let these fools kill each other. I feel someone grab me, then I feel like i'm getting dragged away.

Great. What now?

-----

I wake up. I look up, and see a female mountain lion. Her eyes are brown, and her fur short. She has a large scar across her face.

"Finally. We saved you from the runners, Isaac. You're a strong warrior and a g-"

"Alright."

I cut her off. I've heard it already.

"We want you to help us fight Duke and the runners."

Great. Into another frying pan.

Part 1: Just another night (Cont)

"That's a good joke."

I'm having none of this. I could care less that they saved me. I understand why they want the Runners dead. But for their best bet, they better leave me out of it.

"We're serious."

"So am I."

Suddenly, some large dog storms towards me, getting in my face. His breath smells. His eyes burn into mine.

"Listen, we just saved your ass! I have reason to believe you're helping us out here!"

He spits in my face as he talks. He's pretty fired up. He's got something wrong though. He's got no reason to believe i'm helping them out.

"Listen, moron, you've got no reason to believe i'm on anyones side. You guys helped me out, and i'm grateful. But that doesn't mean you can force me into your little band of vigilantes."

Some of them look on, some glare at me. The leader still remains quiet and alert. The dog continues glaring at me. He looks like he wants to tear my head off.

"Are you insane?! Are you not aware of what Duke's doing?! How could you stand by and let that happen?!"

"Easy. I just let it happen. Sorry i'm not perfect like you, and go around killing Runners. Forgive me for living my life."

The dog has had enough. He decides that by grabbing my neck, then pinning me to the ground. His leader yells something, but he pays no attention.

"That bastard Duke killed my son. And you'll stand by and let him live?"

"Sorry about that. Funny thing is, Duke's my friend."

The dog lets me go. Everyone gasps.

"After the war, me and Duke were deeply scarred and affected by it. While it changed my viewpoint on life, I handled it by talking to friends and family. Duke handled it by creating a gang and killing people. While he does this, we're like brothers. We're just.... Bickering right now. As brothers do."

The group is silent. The dog finally shut up.

"If you want to fight him, be my guest. But leave me out of it."

I began walking away. I told them the story of me and Duke in the Sladic war. All the creatures in the city were divided over freedom and rights. A war began. I went into the war at a young age. There I met Duke. After the war, me and Duke weren't right mentally. I was able to get past it. Besides nightmares and flashbacks. Poor Duke never could. He would usually break down in a crying mess while he slept. He still has trouble coping with it. You could probably tell.

As I walk away, several of the fighters step in my way, and I hear a voice.

"I'm afraid it won't be so simple."

Part 2: Into a another frying pan

Idiot's trying to stop me. Great.

"We are the Freedom Force. I am Maya. My second in command is Marcus. You'll be our new soldier."

I'm done with this.

"Listen, lady, i'm not in your debt. I have no understanding on why you wish for me to kill my friend. I'd kill you a hundred times before killing Duke."

Her gaze would change. Anger. She wants me dead. Any second she'll call it.

"Then you are our enemy, Isaac. Kill him."

Called it. The two run to me, but I turn quickly, grabbing one by his neck, tossing him to the other Freedomer to attack me. Seeing my chance, I run. But as I would run, one would kick my leg out, making me tumble over. Marcus would run at me, I would roll, finding an opening in the building.

I run out, hearing them roar after me. I could take them all on, but not now. I run quickly, moving past a street. I lost them. Why does this need to happen? I've fought my war. My part is done. Everything me, Duke, and our friends fought for and died for, was for nothing. We won the war for them, and now they just fight.

I should of just let this city die. If we did, me and Duke would of been fine, and nobody would be fighting. What's the point of fighting if nothing good comes from it? People praise heroes in war. After every war, they just find another bad guy to kill. Now look at me, being chased by the so-called 'good guys', who want me dead.

This just ain't my night.

Part 2: Into Another Frying Pan (Cont)

I find a short lake. I lap up a few drops of water, before collapsing, dipping my face in the water. Wish I could just sink in. Not suicidal yet. I pull my head out, but continue laying down. This is unbelievable. Two groups who want me dead, and I got caught in the middle of their affair. This is just great.

Unfortunately, these never turn out like the stories mom would tell me as a pup. The heroes won't rush in, beat the bad guys, and save the day. The Runners are the definition of villains, Freedom Force thinks they're doing good, but really, they're making things worse. I guess the CLOSEST to a hero is me, but i'm pretty damn far from a hero. I went out, fought for the city, was hailed as a hero. Really, I should of stayed home, and let this city die.

Everything we fought for was in vain. Our mission was to eliminate the Confed, and take back the city. Completed our mission, and it didn't change a goddamn thing. Really, the Confed could have won, and nothing would be different. Except more animals would be dead.

I continue laying, then I hear footsteps.

"Isaac?"
