Working on my first preset~
« on: July 26, 2015, 06:49:30 pm »
So I recently got interested into making presets. So I decided I would hop to it and find something I would base a preset off of and I recently found a picture of a griffon I'd like to make a preset from.

To avoid any missunderstandings, here is the rightful owner of the drawing ; http://ki-cortana.deviantart.com/art/Snow-Gryphon-391765366

That is the griffon I am basing the preset off of. As you can see, it wont be an easy task. That is why I come to the forums for some help if any of you would gladly offer some~  I know you may say to start on something easier because it will be my first preset that I am making but I really do like a challenge and I am fixed on making this. ((Unless someone would wish to do it for me? :P ))

But yeah, all the help, advice, guides, tips, anything, would be a great benefit to me in making this preset possible. I know SOME basics of making a preset but not the stuff some pros know. :P Thanks for reading!~

It's a brave task indeed to attempt to create a detailed preset for your first one ever. If you take a look at some preset-making guides, that might be a good head-start (I'll link a few below.) Also, using a realistic fur texture will bring the realism into your preset, if that's what you're going for.

And there's always the Preset Tutorial from the Manual -->http://www.feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9&Itemid=16

All the links/tutorials above can be found in the forum's Preset & Markings Tutorials, which can be found here--> http://www.feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=2&jfile=index.php&board=139.0. I've only linked a few, but they have been most helpful to many. Good luck!

Many thanks! I'll be sure to look every guide over and download that texture if I can ever find it. I am going for a realistic feeling for it so I appreciate it! Thanks so much again.

Ooo, that's a very lovely design the griffon has there. You said you found that picture, correct? If the design isn't yours, I'd wait on making the preset and ask the person who made it for permission. That griffon can very well be their character and as much fun as it seems to turn its design into a preset, it would probably be best to ask if it's alright. Though if I'm misunderstanding something, please do correct me.

Warriorstrike before me provided a lot of links to helpful tutorials. There's many others out there as well, and so I wish you luck in finding the help you need, and good luck on your preset. I know you'll do just wonderfully.

Ooooh griffons. Griffons are lovely <3

Anyways, my tips for making a preset would be:

-Use soft brushes
-Blend colors with the 'smudge' tool
-Remember to first get comfortable with the UVs before making a preset. Knowing the locations of everything on the UV is very important!
-Test in-game a lot. Fix any mistakes.

Here's a link to someone who has colored in the UV and is quite helpful for learning where everything ends up.

Here's a tip for making different manes.

Here's a thread with tons of different effects you can add to your preset such as transparency, mane fix, glowy sorta stuff, etc.

I wish you luck with your preset!

Of course, that is why I asked the maker of the drawing if I could use the design to base it off a preset while not claiming the design as my own. I did not start the preset yet so I shall wait for an answer from her. Hopefully I shall receive it soon.

I understand. Thank ye' for correcting me.
I'd like to share a few tips as well:
- Patience is everything. If you're working on the preset long enough, it would be best to take a break and resume the process a little later.
- Like Turtlex said before me, be sure to familiarize yourself with the UV's. That will definitely help you out when needing to put certain markings in certain places.
- Don't be afraid to experiment a bit. Always test it in-game to see if it looks right. The models tend to make some markings look a bit funky.

Ah- also, wings are fun to work with. The .material in Preset folders 11 and 12 should contain the code for adding wings to your preset. If not, the code is located here. Adding Wings

If you need help with the wings, here's a tutorial.
How to Preset Wings

I wish you luck!
