As Fallen said, The character limit is 17 characters long, If your username is longer than that I'm afraid you will not be able to play. You can either wait for registration to open back up (Don't ask for a release date we don't know.) Or, If your friend has a spare account you can use that.

Your account may have been disbanded, Since the site automatically gets rid of inactive accounts not used for around 1 year, Maybe this is the problem? Although I don't know how you would be able to talk on the forums.
So I'm not very sure on what the problem is, Try PMing a Mod/Admin, As I said earlier.
