Whenever I download the game from the download link it downloads as a virtual machine how do I fix this so I can play

Try getting the torrent version of the game instead. If you're unsure of how to use the torrent, just download uTorrent and then click on the torrent version on the downloads page, which will open up in uTorrent and download.
