More than 3 terrain textures?
« on: October 12, 2011, 04:45:29 pm »
Okay, so I know you can have up to 6 terrain textures on your map. And I know that you have to make 2 different Terrain Masks for that. I read through tutorial after tutorial, but they are all for people who use GIMP, but I use Photoshop to make my Height Maps and Terrain Masks.
My question is: Could someone explain step by step how to get all 6 terrain textures? (Screenies would help a lot!)

There's just one thing I don't understand: I read that the first mask has to be black/transparent where the second mask is colored. And the second mask has to be black/transparent where the first mask is colored. Is that right?
And thanks :3

If the textures on the two mask overlap this will make the seem to be bright or even glow.  So if you don't want that to happen you have to make it so they don't overlap.  So the answer I guess to your question is yes, you would have to do make they area black or transparent.

Hope this helps.

Alright, I'll try that. Thanks to both of you :3

Nope, it's not working. I made two simple test masks and left the parts where the first mask is colored black/transparent on the second mask, and the parts where the second mask is colored black/transparent on the first mask. The first mask shows up fine, but when I want to add the textures of the second mask, they always overlap with the first ones, and then everything just gets brighter and brighter with each new texture. I saved them as test1Mask.png and test2Mask.png.
What did I do wrong? :/

I will explain it as best as I can.

So first, you need to make a terrain mask. That's the simple part. Next you need to make another terrain mask, but wherever there is color on the first one, it needs to be transparent on the other. Otherwise, in-game the terrain will glow if the masks overlay each other.

For example,

Terrain Mask 1 (ignore the scribbleness, I just made something up. ^^')

That has transparent parts because we need the other mask to fit in with it:

Together they'd look like this:

(but don't actually merge them)
Because of their transparency, they fit together WITHOUT overlapping each other.
So, in your map maker, you'd load the first mask in like normal, then choose your terrain, then once you arrow past the third terrain, the mask box becomes empty. That is where you will insert the other mask, and choose what you want for that.

So, do I have to make a new image or just a new layer for the second mask? -is confuzzled-

Mkay, I'll try. Thankies :3

-shakes head- Nope, it won't work. When I add the second mask and the fourth texture, it appears diagonal over the whole map from one edge to the other.
