How to make two terrain types in a map?
« on: April 08, 2012, 08:42:31 pm »
I am trying to make a map with two terrain types, the mountain terrain texture and one of the grass textures. How do I put them both in the map?

You are going to have to make a terrain mask! I'll explain how to do it with Gimp :). Open your height map (if you made one), and copy the image. You will then copy that image on to a blank pallet (make sure you select the rbg colors instead of grayscale when opening!), and open your layers box. Anchor the layer, and make a new transparent layer. This will be where your different terrains will be made. Open your color box, and make pure green, pure blue, and pure red (meaning that the red knob will be 255 and the other color knobs will be 0). Fill the empty layer with the blue, and then make that layer transparent so you are able to trace over your height map, for better accuracy. The transparency of that layer should be about 60% to properly trace. You will then need to take your green and red, and trace over other areas that you want as different terrains. When you are satisfied with your terrain mask, delete the height mask and make the transparency 100% again (it should look like a huge blue, red, and green mess XD). Save your image file as a jpg file and a png file in your feralheart terrains folder, and then go into the map maker. Type in your file name in the terrain mask box, and use the knobs to select your terrains! Woo a lot of typing; I hope this helped you dear XD

;D You need to make a mask.
1. Go to C:/FeralHeart/Media/Terrains/Watermill
2. Copy the WatermillMask.png and save it in Terrains.
3. Rename Watermill to the desired name, keep Mask.
4. Erase everything with the eraser tool!
5. Edit the places you want in Photoshop or GIMP, using Red, Green,Blue, and Yellow, to represent the places you want the Texture, what I do is Get the Terrain File, put it below the layer, and colour in the land red, the Water Blue, the Mountains Yellow, and Fields etc green,
6. Save as a .PNG (This is a MUST)
7.Go to your FeralHeart and into your map
8. Below the Terrain name, it should say DefaultMask
9. Change to the mask you saved as, so if you saved is as CaveMask, type in CaveMask.png, and your Finished!, afterward change the texture in one place, then click where it says 1 (beside where all the ground textures are) And keep doing so, there are other colours that let you do more masks, but I normally use those 4 colours.

Need any other tips? Just ask!

Don't forget to Smudge areas to get a better effect! Also Delete the Terrain Layer if you used that to Trace in GIMP/Photoshop, (Not the File, just the tracing Layer)
