Making a terrain mask. I need help!

Anyway, I tried to make a new layer and make it all red but then it all just turned gray so I had to undo the whole paint bucket thing I did. Could you tell me what buttons to press so that I know what to do? I'd really like to make some more maps, but I can't if I can't make a terrain mask :C

EDIT Yes, I read the manual but it wasn't very helpful. It didn't say much about making layers and making things red...

Not to sure about this since I am not much of a map maker and only use gimp for presets but did you try going to where it says "Image" then "Mode" and making sure that it's on RGB and not greyscale?

If it's turning grey then it's most likely you're on Greyscale mode, when making the mask you need to be in RGB mode.
