Snarling with disgust, Felix trudged into the safety of the forest, his eyes flashing with contempt at the sight of the two humans.
After the humans were out of sight, he lowered his rabbit to the ground and leaned back on his haunches. Growling, he raised his paw up to give it a tense lick, and jerked his paw away as the pain jabbed at it. Sighing, he began to slowly lick at it, consuming the dirt and ashes from his pad.
Once he had finished, he gently tested his paw and placed it on the ground. His face screwed up in pain as he snatched up the rabbit in his jaws and limped forward, ignoring the stabs of pain that shot up through it.
He sighted a lake near the shore of the forest and hurried up to it, dropping his rabbit again, and waddled into the lake. The cold water soon began to numb the paw, and the pain soon faded away.
His paw now numb, Felix scrambled onto the shore and lay beside it, panting. He twisted his neck around and dragged the limp body closer to him, and gave small, quick nibbles. He wasn't feeling very hungry tonight, but he knew that it was best to gather up all his energy for the night.
When the stringy meat of the rabbit was gone, he quickly scrapped dirt over the leftovers and gave a luxurious stretch, before lying back down beside the lake and resting his head between his paws. His ear twitched at the sound of the water gently lapping at the shore, but it soon lured him to sleep as he closed his eyes.
