Unfortunately, there is no sign or symbol that will signify whether someone in the map is actually "active" or away from the keyboard. Many people may be moving slightly-- running, walking, changing emotes, etc., and talking in the chatbox. These are all signs that someone is active in the game, although you can always send a whisper to someone through the chatbox, in which some may choose to reply. Some people are busy with a group roleplay or tabbing out into other internet browser windows, so it all depends on the person and the map you're sitting in. My advice would just be to chat a bit in the chatbox, and some folks may decide to answer back and join in. c:

Arf, going to add onto Ms. Nynx's post here, but the general activity of the hour also plays a role.
Sometimes one finds the game a bit less active than other times and that's mainly because of many users needing sleep, are required to go somewhere, or overall tend to their lives' needs. If you find the game to your dissatisfaction, you could always try logging in again in a couple of hours to reveal some new and friendly faces.
Many people play the game, that I can assure. One just needs to be a bit patient and know where to look from time to time.

As Ms. Nynx suggested, one can always try chatting in the chat box for such is the direct link to other player's.

I'll lock this topic up for you, as you appear to be satisfied with the answers above. c:
