Its most likely the number of people on the server, I would wait until its quiter (morning or very early afternoon).
I live in England so its not so much of a problem since the Time Zones for the US and the UK are very different.

Try your connection settings, or if it still doesn't work. Try turning off reflections, view distance and nametags. To reduce lag. Or your computer may not be able to load the map.
