Solved; Might want to add to FAQ
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:11:54 am »
So, I go to Tools then Map Maker and each time I try load my height terrain map, the whole game freezes, crashes and has to be closed and opened again. (I assume the same would happen with the terrain mask but I can't really load one without the other anyway.)

This is my first time making my own map, so it could easily be something I'm doing wrong. Is there a specific folder the height terrain and terrain mask have to be saved in? I currently have it saved in the tutorial's direction of FeralHeart > Media > Terrains > WaterMill .
Any help on making this work would be much appreciated :)
EDIT: Also tried saving it in just FeralHeart > Media > Terrains and it also crashes.
EDIT: Also moved the maps into FeralHeart > Media > Terrains > StarMPack (the name of my map) folder and it still crashes.

Additional info:
Running FH, not FH+.
Files saved as .png
I followed the tutorial's instructions on copying the original watermill file so the height terrain map I created had the same preset size and formats.

EDIT:
Solved the problem. Might want to specify in the tutorials for height maps that bit depth MUST be 8 bits. Some programs *cough Photoshop* auto save it into other bit depths unless you control it.

Did you make sure that the height map you created was in grayscale, and only one layer? I'm not much of a map-maker myself. I hardly have the time. xD But, here are a couple links that may be able to help you. Best of luck. I wish I could be of more assistance.

Yup, it was in greyscale and in one layer. I just think it's worth adding the note because if anyone else has the same problem as me, when asking for help the bit depth is likely to be overlooked because they would have copied the file like I did so it should have all the same preset information so bit depth in this sense is likely to be disregarded. It was only by chance and because I do a lot of work on Photoshop that I noticed this difference. And I noticed there are some sections in the manual that have been marked with a 'come back later' for the admin(s) so they can check those things while they're at it :)
