Mesh Files? Converting files?
« on: March 30, 2013, 12:44:27 am »
Hello!
I've been recently creating meshes for Feral Heart, and I've been using the program "Sculptris" to do so. I have realized that after I have sculpted my object, and textured it, when I go to hit the export button, it exports as a .OBJ file. I was wondering if these files are compatible with Feral Heart, and if not, is there a way to convert them to .MESH files using Sculptris, or possibly is there a program I can use to convert them with? I'm also very precautious of what I download, so if there is a program that I need to convert them with, please let me know if its a trusted or safe download, as far as you know.

Thank you very much guys! ^^

-Cosmic

I've never tried converting meshes before, but I'd suggest PMing someone who does this kind of thing a lot. Specifically, there's Tigg, who may be able to shed a little light on this for you.

Hopefully this'll help you out. The best to you, dearie!

I never tried Sculptris, and the bad news are i did a fast search on google for a mesh exporter, and i found nothing.
If Sculptris does not have an option to directly to export to .mesh format you will need to use a program to convert from .obj to .mesh but will be a tedious and tricky work.
Do a search for any ogre mesh exporter/plug-in from Sculptris, and as the last resource i would pick blender to convert from .obj to .mesh, but you will need to download blender + python + a Ogre mesh exporter + ogre command line tools.

Quote from: Myself
I. - Required Downloads & Installation
-If you have newer versions of any of these, move/delete them, they won't work. You MUST have the exact downloads below.
**If you do not have a program that can open .rar files, you'll need 7-Zip.

Python
Blender

Download and install Python and Blender first.

Secondly, you'll need these scripts for Blender.

Exporter
Script Bundle

Once you have the scripts downloaded, you'll need to EXTRACT the contents, and copy them to the scripts folder, located in
C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\scripts
OR
C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\scripts

Conclusively, you'll need the

Old OgreCommandLineTools.
Pass: ITOCLT

Once you have downloaded the .rar, extract it directly to your C: drive. Don't worry, there is a folder inside the rar, so extracting it directly won't cause the contents to spill all over your C: drive.

^ Everything I use, and it works pretty darn good for me.
Now, once you got all that jazz.
In Blender you go to File->Import
find your Object Files, make sure Smooth Groups is selected, and import it,
then you make sure what you want to export as a mesh is selected (selecting in blender is right click)
Then Export->OGRE Meshes
and export it to wherever, preferably into your OgreCommandLineTools folder, then drag & drop the .mesh.xml onto the OgreXMLConverter.exe and it will spit out a .mesh.
It's a very complex process if you don't find that plugin (if it exists) for Sculptris.
Such is the way of making/editing a game I guess.

I suppose I could have explained better, but I didn't in case you didn't want to go through all this Blender jazz.

If you would like, I convert .OBJ files.

That's great, Aniuk! I may have to call upon you to convert some of my files later on, since I'm still working on sculpting my models, but that would be really helpful of you. Thanks for offering! ^^
