Custom, Presets and item questions?
« on: March 30, 2013, 01:23:47 am »
Greetings, I'm pretty new, and though I've read many resources, I'm still unsure about a lot of things. I apologize in advance if my questions are easily answered by some tutorial or portion of the manual that I didn't read thoroughly enough. ^^'

This is the rought draft of a preset I'm working on based on an OC of mine. Some of the questions pertain to it. Click to go to larger image.

1. I know one's presets don't show up unless the viewer has downloaded and paced their preset in the correct folder, but what does the character look like if they haven't done that? Can "custom" rather than "preset" colors/markings be made to show up to the viewer if they dont have the file?
Edit: I've been seeing a lot of characters who appear flat white, with or without black manes, and I wasn't sure whether that was a result of not having their preset, some other glitch in my install, or what they were supposed to look like.

2. Is it allowed to use the shading included in the game on presets, and is it ok to make modifications to it, or must all presets be user generated in full?

3. Is it ok to us these "Xaph Horns"? I'm unsure where the pack originally came from, and will remove them from the character if it not allowed.

4. Related to above, I think I read that items don't show up properly unless both viewer and user have the same "item pack" installed? Does that mean their "items.cfg" file's contents and it's order is identical, or something else? (I removed many entries from my items file because it was too large to easily browse, since couldn't find a way to move one enty at a time in the character creation menu, and my mouse jumped to quickly through the list. This would mean no one would see those horns, right?)

5. In order to match the character, I think I'll need to make some modifications to the tufts, mane, and/or items.  I'd like to color the mane on the underside different from the top, cheek tufts as well and elbow and rump tufts, a larger tail plume, and possibly nubby fangs. With my limited understanding, it's possible, but I'd need to construct several new meshes?

6. Related to above, are there resources I may read on how to create meshes, and/or edit items for feralheart? I have access to an old version of Maya, I have modeling experience, some texturing experience, but no background with .mesh, conversion, ect

7. Random thought, is it possible to code the material so that a glowing marking only shows up in low light, such as the eyeshine in the character sheet- black/green in normal lighting, bright in dark?
edit: I used a tutorial to make my characters markings glow, and it's pretty awesome, but it wouldn't allow the pupil to show black, as far as I can tell?

I...thinks that what I wanted to ask, thank you to all who made the resources I've already utilized and to any who can help answer my questions!

Answer 1: If the user has not downloaded your preset, you will look like the starter character, unless you put on markings and then the preset, users will be looking at your markings, not your preset.
Answer 2: I see no problems with shading. I've seen it a couple of times.
Answer 3:I'm sure you can. xD It's Ringo and Delay's Item pack if you downloaded that.
Answer 4:The items you have that the user doesn't, won't show up because they don't have the textures for those items in their texture files.
Answer 7:You are able to make characters with presets that have glowing markings.

Thankyou, Piestar! *makes a few edits* I asked about presets because I was seeing a lot of what looked like completely flat white characters, or characters with flat white parts of their model and I wasn't sure if that was caused by absent presets, something I might have messed up in my install, or if that's what the characters were supposed to look like.  There were still some characters around that looked complete with shading and markings around, so I wasn't sure what it could be.

Honestly, I can't remember what I downloaded, I looked up so much and I've a terrible memory. I was looking for a pack that contained sabertooth cat fangs, and found a link. "Pawsome Pack XD" was the name, maybe? I should probably delete and replace all my items after this since I messed with them. ^^'

Silly. xD Heh. White blobs are the result of them downloading custom markings. Such at Aug22 markings. http://adf.ly/2262836/http://www.mediafire.com/?r4tkee3473p82h8  (Try 'em out. Just read the readme. If you don't wanna, just place all of the markings in the textures file and mplace markings.cfg in the main FH folder.) If you download these markings, you get to stop seeing white blobs and you see these markings. You also can wear them if you go to character selection and put them on. (Markings don't belong to me, they belong to someone else.)

Ah! That makes sense! Thankyou again! That one solved almost all the blank characters. I'm still too timid to ask what marking/pack the couple I found tonight had. ^^'

Notes to self:
- obtain the most common user created marking pack/s
- (re)install the most common item pack/s

So I found this thing, has anyone used it and/or consider it safe? Or any of these?

Alrighty. Five and six, here we go.
Quote from: Myself
I. - Required Downloads & Installation
-If you have newer versions of any of these, move/delete them, they won't work. You MUST have the exact downloads below.
**If you do not have a program that can open .rar files, you'll need 7-Zip.

Python
Blender

Download and install Python and Blender first.

Secondly, you'll need these scripts for Blender.

Exporter
Script Bundle

Once you have the scripts downloaded, you'll need to EXTRACT the contents, and copy them to the scripts folder, located in
C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\scripts
OR
C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\scripts

Conclusively, you'll need the

Old OgreCommandLineTools.
Pass: ITOCLT

Once you have downloaded the .rar, extract it directly to your C: drive. Don't worry, there is a folder inside the rar, so extracting it directly won't cause the contents to spill all over your C: drive.

(Ignore the downloads section of that post, use the ones I gave above.)

Basically, you'll have to get a feel for Blender before you go any farther.
Editing game-meshes would mean you'd have to add all the animations for it, Idle, Sit, Walk, Run, Lay, SideLay, Roll, etc etc, so it would be rather tedious.
A simpler option would be to make your edited body parts as an item.
In which case you wouldn't have to animate all that jazz.

This post is from March 30th. I'd recommend starting your own topic because it's very unlikely that anyone would respond back. To answer your question, this is a old tutorial explaining how to use blender to make objects:
