Object making and materials and portals, oh my!
« on: April 30, 2013, 02:25:01 pm »
So I'm making a map and I do have some questions, 2 for now, but if they get answered more might pop up:

1. [answered] How do I position a functioning portal? I looked at this one tutorial but it was about linking several maps, and I have only one. I tried adding new gate, leading to Cape, but it said map not found when testing. In the end I end up with two useless portals and one, original, still out of map's boundary.

2. [answered] How exactly do I add meshes with own materials into game? I only managed to add FHs default items, and one log, with putting material file into material folder, texture to textures, and mesh to my_objects. Others I tried come out white.

Edit:

3. [answered] How can I make water be at different levels?

Aye, Try looking at this:

For those with this problem.....

And that dont know how to fix it, well you came to the right place. I'll be telling you how to make your portal reachable.

Ok firstly open Map Maker and load your map. I'm sure you want a particular spot for your portal, so go there. Go where you want your portal to be. Now place an object, any object maybe a rock like me. Place that rock where you want your portal to be.
Go to the "Controls" tab now and look at the X,Y,Z coordinates for the rock, make sure you have the rock selected.
Remember those coordinates in the red circle blob thing.

Those coordinates need to be typed in here. The rocks X coordinate needs to be typed into the X box. The Y coordinate needs to be in the Y box. The Z coordinate needs to go in the Z box.
Just something you should know but the coordinates will not always fit. So just type in as much as can fit into the box. Its ok if you're missing one number.
This box needs to be checked. It's important, very important. If the box isn't checked there is no portal.
When you have typed in the coordinates click the button "Test" and see if the portals where you want it. The portal will never be exactly where you want it but very near. So its always good to test it. If it needs to come forwards move the rock forwards and type the new coordinates in. If its too far left move the rock into the right and copy the new coordinates.

Now what if the portals faced at the wrong angle? What if its facing upwards too much and not straight ahead. Well face your camera in the direction or angle where you want your portal to be facing. Well what we are doing is changing the Yaw.
See that long box at the bottom of your screen? See that "Yaw:"? Well still facing at the angle/direction with our camera, without moving we need to copy that coordinate.
We will type that coordinate in this box underneath the X,Y,Z coordinates.

Anyway let's click the "Test" button. Is your portal facing the right angle and is in the spot you wanted? It is?! Well congratulations because your portal is now reachable.

If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them up.

Thanks for reading.

Still having trouble?

Thank you for these. I did manage to add a portal, and I entered my map through it from the Cape, but in the map the portal wasn't there.

You may need to re-set the coordinates of where your character would spawn. Go into map maker and find the portal and re-locate it or edit the arrival location. Read through the Quote again that I sent you and I'm sure you'll have the result you are wanting.

Answer to Question 2.
To add Objects/meshes to FH you put all the files in Local Disk (C:) >> Feral Heart >> Media >> Objects >> My objects. If it asks you to replace anything then replace it. If you don't then there is a good chance that Feral Heart may crash for you. There should be a 'README' inside each folder you download, they are the instructions for where to put the Objects. Particles are lightly different, but I can guide you with that too. Just ask~

Here are some Objects/meshes/particles that you might want instead of the default:

Answer to Question 3

Click 'New water' and you will get a square of water that you can re-size.

The image above shows how you can ad and re-size the tide of water you wish to have.

If you want to know how to change the water, I could possibly guide you through that too. Just ask~

Thank you again.

I changed portal's location, but it still doesn't show up when I enter the map. I do enter through it, but it's not seen, so I still can't exit the map. And I'm not sure how do I change arrivals location? Okay, I exported and it seems to work for now.

As for objects, I think my problem was that I would add objects to folder while FH is on. Because now I did what I'd do before, but materials show up.
So yeah, I haven't seen this anywhere and I don't know if it's posted somewhere, but it should mean you have to restart FH after adding objects.

Things are good with water now, but I suppose you can't rotate the water square?

Aand, one more. Is it safe to rename a map? Not display name, but the one higher. I don't want to mess it up :x

Display name is okay to change, but not sure about the other name there.
No, you can't rotate the water square, sadly. Can be quite annoying at times, but you can just add a random object to block out the little mistake there. Exactly what I do. XD
It is safe to rename the higher area, but it adds a new map in your map list. The name in the higher area doesn't matter much, it's just the exported name of the map and name on your list of maps.
