It's kind of like items. Different item packs can cause you to look different, like a marshmallow or different markings. It's more rare than the item pack stuff though. I know what you mean without pictures, by the way.
I'm pretty sure you can tell your friend what marking you're wearing so they know what you're talking about, perhaps.
