Map Questions (major map issues)
« on: July 10, 2013, 04:45:00 am »
Just to clarify, would it be considered 'plagiarizing' if I used the Watermill stuff in one of my maps? The only reason I'm asking this is because I don't know how to make a height map and mask or where I'm supposed to put it to make it work.

Edit: I've tried downloading one of the ones at the Kovu's Corner site and tried making one of my own but I have not idea whatsoever where to put them to make them work. :(

I don't think it would specifically be considered "plagiarism" at all. Watermill is an 'example' map for those who are new to map making, so they can experiment with object placing and such, as well as playing around with the overall resolution and heights. A few of my friends have made some maps based off of Watermill, so I don't entirely think it would be wrong to use it.

I've found a few tutorials, though, incase you want to learn how to make some height maps and terrain masks yourself. c:

Terrain Masks: http://www.feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7&Itemid=10

I hope you find these links as helpful. ~

Note: All credit belongs to those who have gone through all the trouble to create these tutorials for other members. I apologize if I have given these links out without permission anyhow.

If you are new to making height maps and masks, it's best to follow .exe advice. However, if you just don't have the patience to do it, there are an abunance of free-to-use masks and height maps out there.

Check out : http://kovured.com/downloadsheightmap.html for height maps
And http://kovured.com/downloadsterrainmask.html for Masks.

Nope. I didn't make 'em. That should be obvious.

Thanks guys! But when I tried the tutorials, it didn't work. Probably because I don't have Photoshop or Gimp, but I used Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 6, which is still a high quality art program.

Note: Good to know I can make maps based off of WaterMill though. :)
P.S. I still want to learn where to put any ones I download from the site in the link or ones I create myself...

You place the files when done as a .png and put it in FeralHeart>media>terrains
After that they should work but remember height maps need to be 512x512 in size, and always greyscaled and flattened when saved. Otherwise it might not work when you test in game till you do so.

Flattened? I got the png thing for sure and the measurements (possibly 513x513?), but what do you mean by flatten? o3o
And I don't have GIMP or Photoshop btw.
