Map maker crashing when I import hightmap - (solved)
« on: December 12, 2013, 01:16:00 pm »
Ok, so I'm making my first map. Mask and terrain are finished and ready to roll!
Whenever I open map maker and choose my hight map -made myself- it crashes!  >:( I can import my mask without a problem. But the hight map crashes the game every time. I've made sure to save the file as 'bluejayterrain.png' and merge all my layers before I save. Made it greyscale, re-sized to 513x513 ect. I looked at Delay's topic and followed everything (http://www.feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=2&jfile=index.php&topic=1391.0). Still crashes.
Also I'm working on a mac computer. For a while I guessed that was the reason presets, items and maps weren't working. But I can download other people's maps. But not make my own without sticking to the default terrains in map maker. Help?

I think the solution is to remove alpha channel. Have you done that?

This can be really irritating, I don't really know about mac's but here's what I have found:
All on one layer,
Unclocked background layer,
All on background,
Merge and flatten,
Only letters in name,
No spaces in name,
No capitals in name,
Use an uncommon name,
513 by 513
512 by 512
Terrain grayscale,
Mask RGB,
.png file.

(Yes sorry I did repeat some that you said already, apologies.)

Regarding everything said above, the map must be 513x513 not 512x512 as well, when you named it make sure the T on Terrain is capitalized as it is case sensitive EX) bluejayTerrain.png

[/b]The heightmask must be in grayscale mode, if you're using a program such as GIMP go to the Image tab and arrow over to Mode>Grayscale

There MUST MUST MUST be one layer, if there are multiple then right click one of them and hit "Merge" or "Anchor Down" I think the name you chose is fine but perhaps rename it bluejaywolfTerrain just to make sure no one else has coincidently named their's bluejayTerrain. You MAY have capitals in your map name so saving it as BlueJayTerrain would be fine as long as it's typed like that in the mapmaker.

Saving it as .png is one of the most important and overlooked especially if you're using the latest version of GIMP. If you simply save it then GIMP will save it as a .xcf file. What you want to do is click "File" then go down to export, then click ok for any boxes that pop-up after that, this will automatically save it as a .png

As probably mentioned above, it crashes because it doesn't fit the criteria that it must have for a heightmap. Things like grayscale, being 513x513, being a flattened layer is the most common things.

Do watch the video below showing how to make height maps and import them to the game since you're doing something wrong at the moment.

I think the solution is to remove alpha channel. Have you done that?

The image is already grey scale so it won't give me an option too. Thanks though.

It's fine xD) I've made sure do do all of these things, I'm beginning to think it's a problem with how much my computer can deal with, since PCs seem to do better with larger files. :-\

I renamed it to "BluejaywolfTerrain.png" and tried it, and it still crashes instantly. Otherwise I've saved it was a .png, merged all the layers before saving, changed the colour space to greyscale and removed alpha channel (where I can). And yes, I'm using GIMP for this. I also tried saving it as a .jpg and then converted it back to .png to make sure it wasn't transparent anywhere, but it made no difference. :I

Thanks so much Red! I followed this vid step by step and my map is working! I'm still unsure what it is I missed but it's fixed now. Thanks again.  ;D
