How do I add more than one terrain mask.

You see I've hear it is possible to add more than one terrain mask to a map and I desperately need to learn how to do that with GIMP.
I already know how to add in height maps and only one terrain mask.
But I need to know how to add a second mask since I need to completely re-color a plot of land on my height map.
Can anybody help me?
A detailed explanation would be lovely~
