Height Map Triggering My Game to Crash?
« on: August 03, 2015, 05:24:09 am »
So recently I was trying to make my first Height Map and followed all the steps to make my first one not crap.

So, I did as I was told and had the dimensions 513 by 513 pixels, named it something without spaces and without any form of capitalization, it had no layers, was grey-scale set, and exported as a png in the Terrain's folder.

I did this three times with all the right things, but different file names and every time FH crashed immediately.
After researching a tad bit I found that deleting and re-downloading Feral-Heart as a whole usually solves the problem...
So I did...had to download all my old crap again like mass markings and Legendary Items, and ONE map I needed for a group I'm in.

Afte rI checked my characters working ability and found everything in working order...I turned to the task I was up to a hour before. The testing of the cursed map.

And surprise surprise, as the title of this thread seems, it still crashed on me to my frustration. Everything else I've read about says the exact same thing and I needed to list all the stuff above because I know someone will be like "well did you do (obvious thing here)" and it's a waste of both our times.

So if anyone has an answer to this predicament, please do tell, I'm getting mad with this now and I just want to make a stupid map xD

Hey Jace, sorry to hear that your map keeps crashing, but hopefully you'll be able to fix it on time. :)

You have done everything correctly and there was no use to re-download the game if the Heightmap keeps crashing it, all it needed is fixing. c: Just make sure your alpha channel is turned off, because this gives it an extra layer without even saying there is. Go to layers > Transparency and if it says 'Remove Alpha Channel' is available, remove it. After that, you can save it as .png and it should be working by then.

Hope this helps. :D

If you're using GIMP, I had this same issue, and I did everything OVER AND OVER again so hopeful there was ONE things I missed in the tutorials, but no, something they forgot to mentions, THE ALPHA CHANNEL! Right click your map layer, go to Layers>Transparency>Remove Alpha Channel, then save it in your Terrains folder as a .PNG and it should work. If it doesn't, I'm not sure either, Hopefully it's this though!

Did you use the height map which is displayed in this thread?

Well, your height map is 513x413 (not 513x513).

Hi there. I found a tutorial using Photoshop and Gimp that might be of some help to you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTO8tyhSQPU

A few people have mentioned for you to remove the Alpha channel, which is quite important, so you might want to take a look at that. Also, be sure to flatten the layers on the heightmap. If you don't want to lose any more data (in case something goes wrong in the future) a good option would be to create a separate folder for all your FH markings, presets, maps, and anything you wouldn't want to lose. c:

Alright I've looked at the Alpha Channel thing and it appears to not be there already as it is unclickable meaning I do not have it on.

HOWEVER as someone mentioned I guessed I mistyped putting in the size as it does appear that my map's size is 513 by 413 aha. I didn't even realize. I'll try this out once I add onto the new area and get back to this if it doesn't work.

Aha! xD I didn't realise either, Elaysa is a smart one! :) Just re-size your map and it'll be fixed. There shouldn't be any other problems when you re-size it, but if there is, tell us. c:

Alright. I've fixed the map and deleted that pesky layer thing, as this time, yes, it had it.
Followed all the previous steps and...

Crashed again.
Any other ideas?

Well, try to completely rework your height map (do it again), because if you've only resized it, your height map probably won't work in your game, and your FeralHeart will most likely crash. As far as I know, resizing your picture will affect its quality.

Yes true, resizing the picture will affect the quality but changing the size won't crash the game if she will change it to 513x513 (I have tried that plenty of times). I recommend you to double check that it is grayscale, it has the name 'Terrain' next to your exact map name, 513x513, alpha channel is removed and no layers (it should say 0 layers in gimp). Restarting your work can be very frustrating, even if you don't work hard enough to see whats crashing the game.
