Because the elitists we now know as the literates created a divide between those who can read and write with those who can't. This creates a gap in society in which a neat conflict could happen, it opens the chance of an excitingly massive roleplay for everyone with multiple factions fighting each other for every player's equality in the community of FH. It's basically the French revolution all over again.
