map help (terrain) *SOLVED
« on: January 04, 2017, 03:53:45 am »
ooppss feel kinda stupid but i havent been around lately and im not sure if theres any common fixes lol.  anyway i make all my heightmap terrains in photoshop & with my latest i know it's grayscale for certain& the size is the same as the default terrain's, and i flatten the image (so there is only one layer) before saving as .png.  however everytime i open up mapmaker it just crashes in a few seconds? was wondering if there was a particular fix i could jump on or any other help i could get. tysm in advance! i'm really worried about this because i just put about 3 hours of work into making my own meshes w/ object maker for this, lmao.

btw the terrain is
-in the DEFAULT folder (feralheart>media>terrains>default)
-133 kb... if thats relevant somehow
- directly edited over top the default terrain .png file
- definitely greyscale in PS settings
- saved with one layer and has no transparency whatsoever

Try opening it up in Paint and resaving over it. That's worked before for someone. Even though it seems as though you've done the necessary steps, maybe it still hasn't applied to the file or something? (Picky Photoshop xD)

tysm for both of you getting back to me! i tried both options but upon restarting the game i found that...... i'm at even more of a disadvantage, lmao. map maker crashes immediately upon opening it now, even after i completely deleted every terrain+mask file that I Made from the game folders.

EDIT: fixed above problem but still facing problems w/ terrain loading. any more suggestions??

You don't by chance have any duplicate particle files do you?

Duplicate particle files would be in the particles folder and would usually end in _0 or _1 after the filename or filetype. That seems to be a pretty common issue for crashing.

Other thing I would suggest would be to change your rendering subsystem to the opposite one and see if you crash after changing it.

fixed the last mentioned issue, i deleted the temp map file like an idiot and didn't notice lol.  but suggested methods still aren't working? do you have any other recommendations? tysm for your continued help btw i truly appreciate it!!

So it sounds like it's no longer crashing anymore right? It's just the heightmap still giving you problems? Is it still crashing because of the heightmap?

If you have already tried resaving over it in Paint and removed the alpha channel and everything, i'm not sure other than to make a dummy heightmap in its place. What I mean by that is just make a brand new heightmap (move the current one into a different folder for safe keeping). The new heightmap doesn't have to have any effort put into it at all. It could be flat even if you want. It's just something that could act as a "refresh" for it. Double check everything is correct: .png format, 513x513, Grayscale, No Alpha Channel and then save it, making sure to use the same name as your previous heightmap name. Then try opening up your map and seeing if the new one appears

managed to fix this fortunately! basically just downloaded gimp and copy-pasted everything from the file into there w/ the same settings, lmao.  i think feralheart is kind of just picky about anything you make in PS besides presets, but again seriously thank you so much for all your help! i appreciate it so much!

You're very welcome ^^ Glad it fixed!

FeralHeart is picky with that sort of thing xD I'm surprised pasting it into Paint didn't work as it's a similar solution, but it doesn't matter now as doing the same thing in Gimp helped ya.
